The Silkworm
The Silkworm | Robert Galbraith
Private investigator Cormoran Strike returns in a new mystery from Robert Galbraith, author of the #1 international bestseller The Cuckoo's Calling. When novelist Owen Quine goes missing, his wife calls in private detective Cormoran Strike. At first, Mrs. Quine just thinks her husband has gone off by himself for a few days--as he has done before--and she wants Strike to find him and bring him home. But as Strike investigates, it becomes clear that there is more to Quine's disappearance than his wife realizes. The novelist has just completed a manuscript featuring poisonous pen-portraits of almost everyone he knows. If the novel were to be published, it would ruin lives--meaning that there are a lot of people who might want him silenced. When Quine is found brutally murdered under bizarre circumstances, it becomes a race against time to understand the motivation of a ruthless killer, a killer unlike any Strike has encountered before...A compulsively readable crime novel with twists at every turn, THE SILKWORM is the second in the highly acclaimed series featuring Cormoran Strike and his determined young assistant, Robin Ellacott.

I think this might be my new hate read. I‘m perplexed as to why these do so well - even with the famous name behind them.

britt_brooke I liked these books but they needn‘t have been so long. A good editing down would‘ve made them better. 2mo
Verity @britt_brooke oh totally. They should be cozy crime length, no longer. Nearly 500 pages is way too long for a single strand murder mystery. And they need more show and less tell. Also I counted seven “said” on one page at one point. And yet I kept going and I‘ll probably read the next one... 2mo
britt_brooke @Verity For what it‘s worth, the first one was my least favorite. 😬 I wouldn‘t have continued, but I liked the characters. 2mo

Lethal White is still TBR, but I have read the rest of Galbraith's excellent Cormoran Strike series & there is no shortage of pub scenes in any of them. Especially in the second entry, The Silkworm, where it seemed like a significant portion of the dialogue/sleuthing happened over a drink or two.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Strike and Robin have officially hooked me! This story is far more intriguing than The Cuckoo‘s Calling. Better writing, too. The gruesome crime details surprised me, but the idea behind it is so damned clever. The novel within the novel is brilliant in its bizarreness. I thought I had the killer pegged early on, but was wrong. A super sleuth I am not. I don‘t usually go for series, but ... on to the next one.

BilboBookends Whoa! I‘d didn‘t know they made it into a series! 4mo
britt_brooke @BilboBookends Yep! There are 4 books so far. The most recent was published last year. I have no clue if more are intended. 4mo

britt_brooke @saresmoore Thanks! 😁 I didn‘t love the first one either. Just read it a few days ago. The story was just ok, and I was annoyed by the writing, but I really liked the characters. I‘m reading book 3 now. (edited) 4mo

britt_brooke @Booksnchill I‘m reading the third one now. I don‘t usually go for mysteries, but I love these characters! 4mo

A superb thriller to follow up the Cuckoo‘s Calling. Cormoran Strike slowly grows on you. He may not be a Sherlock Holmes but his powers of recall and deduction are really good. There are no major twists and turns but you can see how, gradually ties the loose ends up.. worth a read.. Rowling surpasses expectations..

Overall I enjoyed this, love the two main characters and the writing style, very pacy. I wish some authors of detective novels weren‘t trying to outdo each other to come up with the sickest ways of murdering people, but Galbraith just about gets away with it because there‘s an element of parody, poking fun at the literary establishment. I understand what some reviewers mean re length, could have been remedied by ditching the character of Pippa.

Another interesting who-dunnit by JK Rowling. The MO was very unique and I wasn‘t close to guessing the criminal. My only complaint is that I was wishing for something more with Robin and Strike. I know where that relationship is leading but I hope there‘s more substantial build up before that happens.

I know that these books aren‘t going to change the course of literary history, but I really enjoy them. The echoes of the classic gumshoe novels mixed with current culture, the interplay between Strike and Robin, and even the tragic (or not, depending on how you look at it) Charlotte situation really draw me in, and I truly enjoy spending time with these characters. The murder here‘s a bit squicky, but there‘s a fun romp thru the publishing world.

Galbraith's second Cormoran Strike novel takes place during the winter. Cormoran's investigation involves a lot of conversations in diners & pubs. A lot of beer, cigarettes & snow. Bombyx Mori, the book in the book is one of the strangest I've ever read. I found the Cinemax adaptation of Cuckoo's Calling to be well done, but I was really disappointed with their handling of Silkworm & never bothered finishing.
