I re-read the first one late last year. Finally made my way through to the second one, with other books along the way. A fantastic follow up to his debut novel. Mike Bowditch is a homely fellow, who just wants to protect the natural resources of Maine, but finds his nose poking around in everything and asking questions others won‘t/don‘t want to ask.

This was really good! The main characters are in tough situations and find themselves both supporting and challenging each other. Watching them fall for each other while working things out is really rewarding. I loved the baseball and transcription pieces, Linda Holmes is a wonderful writer. Great on #audio. #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

ChasingOm I've loved both of her books. 🥰 3w

Ellen goes to Beacon, Maine w/o her fiancé to fulfill her grandmother‘s dying wish: to deliver a letter to her gm‘s ex. There she meets an attractive local carpenter. What secrets will she uncover about her gm? Will she go forward with her wedding?

I didn‘t like this book. It was a badly written cliché, which made it boring. Most of it was predictable. The only thing I liked was getting to know her gm more.

Beautiful narrative, she conveys so much emotion and dialogue in short sentences. I read it as autobiographical, simply because it was so in depth. However I'm aware it isn't Strout 's experience.
Now I need her to write another! Maybe a follow up to Bob Burgess?

A bit late to the party I know, but so glad I read it.. I loved the flawed protagonist.. it really shows that we do not always have things figured out as we get older.. we can still have insecurities and baggage from the past. Loved the characters and small town vibes.. I have read her other series, my name is Lucy Barton including Lucy by the Sea and I will read anything Strout writes as I love her writing!

sarahbarnes I just read this one this past fall. She‘s an incredible writer. 1mo

Does anyone else save books to read? If I've eagerly waited for one, I keep it and savour the fact I have it still to read... then devour it!
This is one such book. Contentment:)

"That's what most don't understand," he'd said, gesturing at her and her brother. "Fictional characters are often more real than the flesh and blood people around us in the ways that matter, that is."
