Barchester Towers
Barchester Towers | Anthony Trollope
I never saw anything like you clergymen ... you are always thinking of fighting each other After the death of old Dr Grantly, a bitter struggle begins over who will succeed him as Bishop of Barchester. And when the decision is finally made to appoint the evangelical Dr Proudie, rather than the son of the old bishop, Archdeacon Grantly, resentment and suspicion threaten to cause deep divisions within the diocese. Trollopes masterly depiction of the plotting and back-stabbing that ensues lies at the heart of one of the most vivid and comic of his Barsetshire novels, peopled by such very different figures as the saintly Warden of Hirams Hospital, Septimus Harding, the ineffectual but well-meaning new bishop and his terrifying wife, and the oily chaplain Mr Slope who has designs both on Mr Hardings daughter and the fascinating would-be femme fatale Signora Vesey-Neroni. This is the second volume of Trollopes Chronicles of Barsetshire. In his introduction, Robin Gilmour examines the novels political and social background and Trollopes concern with changes occurring in society. This edition also includes a preface by J. K. Galbraith.

#booked2019 @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen
Ta da, i feel i shd have a dry sherry to celebrate finishing the challenge with this bk about intrigue in 1850's clergy. If i adopted the 50 page rule i wd have given up but as i met the Stanhope family at the Bishops party things perked up as Mr Slope + the stanhopes made the bk a little more colourful . An enjoyable 'Public Domain' rd. Thanks for organising everyone now to 2020 ☺

BarbaraTheBibliophage Great job! Hope you had some sherry! 🍷 2w

saresmoore @ReadingEnvy I think you‘re right. I‘d better go back and spend some more time browsing. 😏 2y
saresmoore @TrishB It‘s a great shop! The sign out front said, “It‘s bigger on the inside.” I didn‘t manage any time travel, but it certainly did have a lot of books! 2y
TrishB I like that it looks like there is lots to explore 😁 2y

britt_brooke Ooh, this looks fantastic! Also, what cute shopping buddies you have. 💚 2y
saresmoore @britt_brooke They are pretty cute, but I think they need to work on their book shopping endurance. They barely lasted twenty minutes! 2y
batsy Adorable! (nice stack of Poes there...) 2y
LauraBeth Looks like the move was a winning decision 💕💕 2y
saresmoore @batsy They had an extensive Poe display! And by that, I mean an old armchair covered in stacks of books. It was really fun. There was an Alice in Wonderland display, as well, including Nabokov‘s Russian translation. 2y
saresmoore @LauraBeth One of the most clearly delineated, divinely inspired decisions we‘ve ever made! 2y

Finished the second book in Trollope's Barchester Chronicles. I'm thoroughly enjoying his witty observations on 18th century social mores, assumed gender roles, and the debatable authority of the church. As the prose is so beautifully constructed, I'm taking my time, reading only 30-50 pages at a time so I can slowly savor and fully appreciate these #classic novels.

And aren't these #covers gorgeous? 😍

BarbaraBB I have the Palliser novels in the same Oxford edition. Haven't read them yet though. 2y
LeahBergen They're beautiful! 2y
batsy Lovely covers and review. I've not read any Trollope and I must fix that! 2y

Posemn I love your pic. The book covers are beautiful with the flowers. Sounds like the Barchester Chronicles might be the "quiet" I seem to be looking for these days. 2y
cathysaid @LeahBergen I don't want to shelve them because then I can't see the covers! 2y
cathysaid @BarbaraBB Loving these editions. @batsy I hadn't read any either! The first in the series is The Warden. It's only 200 pages so a good one with which to start. 2y
cathysaid @Posemn These editions are great because they include an appendix explaining how the Church of England plays into Trollope's novels. There are also explanatory notes for the text that help make sense of some references to 18th c. events and figures mentioned by the author. 2y
EvieBee I‘m just getting started after years of people recommending it. Can‘t believe I didn‘t do it sooner. 2y

cathysaid Me too! Just read The Warden last week and am midway through Barchester Towers. I'm enjoying Trollope's dry wit and I suspect he's also a feminist...at least that's how I'm choosing to interpret some of his social commentary. Love this gorgeous set of books! Jealous 💚 2y
LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads I was always curious how the Thirkell series tied into Trollope's. Oh oh.... I may go #DrunkThirkelling soon. 😆 2y

I recently watched Dr. Thorne on Amazon, which made me want to read the series it came from. Found this one, book 2, on Book Mooch. I read several Trollope books in the early 90's, but I don't remember which books, and that was before I started keeping a reading log.

I love the books of Anthony Trollope and I can recommend the audio books narrated by Timothy West, available on audible, wholeheartedly. Barchester Towers has to be one of my favourites, but it is very lucky for me that Trollope has written so many novels, as there are still so many I can look forward to reading for the first time.

HotCocoaReads I have this book but haven't yet read it. I'm excited to get started! 3y
zsuzsanna_reads @HotCocoaReads I think it must be Trollope's funniest novel 😁 3y

My second Trollope and a complete joy. So happy to have tapped a whole new vein of Victorian goodness.

This is deliciously good on the politics of church leadership. Every position commands a salary and a place in society. Nothing so Victorian as a vicious feud played out with perfect manners over a love story based on repressed emotions and dreadful misunderstandings. A delight.

🌟🌟🌟🌟 Only reason for 4 stars is because of a bit too much church politics for my taste, but overall this is a great read!! As always, Trollope is spot on with his characters, and I couldn't get enough of the Stanhopes! Signora Neroni deserves her own novel. Stick with this, and you'll have a great time! On to the next book for #biblioweekend !

Lakesidemusing Signora Neroni is a great character! Loved this book ❤️ 3y

It's #Recommendsday! Any Trollope fans here on Litsy? A small group of bloggers read all six Barsetshire novels last year... what a great reading experience! We may tackle The Palliser series in 2017.
