The Forgetting Time
The Forgetting Time: A Novel | Sharon Guskin
Gripping, deft, and moving. Chelsea Cain, The New York Times Book ReviewNoah wants to go home. A seemingly easy request from most four year olds. But as Noah's single-mother, Janie, knows, nothing with Noah is ever easy. One day the pre-school office calls and says Janie needs to come in to talk about Noah, and no, not later, now and life as she knows it stops. For Jerome Anderson, life as he knows it has stopped. A deadly diagnosis has made him realize he is approaching the end of his life. His first thoughtI'm not finished yet. Once a shining young star in academia, a graduate of Yale and Harvard, a professor of psychology, he threw it all away because of an obsession. Anderson became the laughing stock of his peers, but he didn't caresomething had to be going on beyond what anyone could see or comprehend. He spent his life searching for that something else. And with Noah, he thinks he's found it.Soon Noah, Janie and Anderson will find themselves knocking on the door of a mother whose son has been missing for eight yearsand when that door opens, all of their questions will be answered.Sharon Guskin has written a captivating, thought-provoking novel that explores what we regret in the end of our lives and hope for in the beginning, and everything in between. In equal parts a mystery and a testament to the profound connection between a child and parent, The Forgetting Time marks the debut of a major new talent.

#WinterWonderland #TryToRemember. A mother has no idea how her young son knows certain things or why he talks about his other mom, one he doesn‘t have. Or does he? She is referred to a professor who specializes in case studies of reincarnation. What nobody knows yet is that the professor is starting to show signs of Alzheimer‘s. In between chapters of this touching story are actual true, real life accounts of reincarnation. A great book.

RadicalReader @Reggie cannot wait to check out this phenomenal sounding novel you have some truly terrific reads 1y

I loved the premise of this book. It explored the fascinating concept of reincarnation which is not a topic I would usually look for in a book! However, I did feel there was something lacking in the plot and I felt a sense of incompleteness when I'd finished reading. The exploration of one of the character's aphasia seemed a little rushed and out of place 6/10

I can‘t begin to imagine how it would feel to have your child remember another mother. Not only to remember her but to pine for her and constantly ask when she is coming. This is Noah‘s story. A child who remembers his past life, a child who wants to go home. This book was at times heartbreaking and at times full of joy but always it was fascinating. A great read. 👍

This book is probably not for everyone but it was definitely for me. Two of the major themes are reincarnation (which I tend to believe in) and aphasia (which I struggled back from after having a massive stroke). So, as you can see, I could fully relate to most, if not all, of the story. It touched me on so many levels and so deeply that I‘m pretty sure I will never forget this book.

AmyG We read this for book club and everyone loved it. Hope you are well. 2y

There is a fascinating premise here: 4 year old Noah has nightmares and a terrible fear of the past. He also keeps asking his mom if he can go home. This develops into an exploration of the possibility of reincarnation. I found the middle to be solid but the beginning and end a bit weaker for me. Definitely thought-provoking.

Reincarnation meets murder mystery in this story. What would you do if your child kept asking for his other mother and never wanted to take a bath because of a real fear of drowning? Janie with the help of Anderson goes looking for answers about another life her son, Noah, might have possibly lived. I don't believe in reincarnation but still found it fascinating to contemplate what it would mean if I did.

This is such a tough one to review...

I went in blind and the premise was a BIG surprise... riveting and provocative!

I loved the themes of identity, human connectedness and the afterlife. The characters were so well explored and the plot started out so strong...

... and then, for me, it fizzled out.

I'm going with "Pick" for originality, but (sadly) only ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Reggie I think the sentimentality of it sucked me in cause I'm a crybaby. I'm not a parent but if my kid was able to visit me again through re-incarnation I'd be grateful to get a second chance to say everything I never thought I'd get a chance to say. But then there's the double-edge sword where they go away again and your heart breaks all over again. I felt like this story was a wave, there was a build to a crest and then it receded until nothing. 3y
Reggie Sorry just had to talk about this. Lol 3y
CouronneDhiver I so badly wanted to stay in love with this one, but the last 1/4 didn't do it for me. All that said, this is a book I'll be thinking about for a long time... @Reggie (that's why this review was a hard one) 3y

I was hoping for a creepy book with an intellectual bent. This book about a boy who remembers a previous life tried for that, but the pace was too plodding for me. The last 1/4 of the book saved it from being a thumbs down.

I was close to giving up after the first hour, but the mother's heartache drew me in. I related to her struggles, and that kept me in the story. There were no simple solutions or easy answers. In the end, I just wanted to know how the story would resolve. Overall, I would rate it a 🤷‍♀️.

Bklover I felt the same way. Can't imagine how awful this would be. I just wanted the book to End!! 3y

Wow! This was a fascinating and thought provoking novel! On the surface, it is a mystery that delves into reincarnation but it is also much more than that. It is about motherhood, pain & loss, sacrifices and love. This page turner of a novel kept me up many nights trying to finish it.

This is a refreshing and original story! Heartbreaking at times (imagine your own child[ren] in Noah's/Tommy's shoes). I can picture a more fleshed out story that takes a closer look at family dynamics in times of tragedy, but I did enjoy this nonetheless.

Not only does this supernatural mystery center around a deeply philosophical/religious concept but it explores the relationship between mother and child and the lengths a mother will go for her child. Although the book is a work of fiction, it includes fascinating excerpts from a nonfiction book. Loved this book. Couldn't get myself to put it down. It's definitely something different. It's about a mother who realizes something is very wrong with her child. He refuses to bathe, talks very strangely about his other mother and how he wants to go home. This is definitely a book I would recommend to others.

How does a daily Word for the Day post sound? I love coming across new terms, even if I can't figure out how to pronounce them 😂👏🏻. Today's Word is: bananaquit. It's a small songbird with a curved bill, typically with a white stripe over the eye, a sooty gray back, and yellow underparts. #WordForTheDay 😎👍🏻
