The Old Man and the Sea
The Old Man and the Sea | Ernest Miller Hemingway
This is an Egyptian edition of one of the most internationally celebrated works of fiction, Hemingways The old Man and the Sea. A Pulitzer-award and - Noble-prize winner, this work has cer- tainly become so extensively known all over the world, receiving a myriad of critical studies and translations. Hemingway himself could have never imagined such a sweeping success for his novel- la, devised while temporarily staying (for a few weeks) at a fishing village in Cuba. It is not simply the story of a big fish catch, but it is the story of a touching human relationship between old age and younghood, not to mention its highly philosophical message that it carries. All this, apart from other equally significant factors, makes Hemingways work worth reading and contemplating.

#CuriousCovers Day 13: Man

I‘ve only read this once, back in 11th grade American literature. Not my favorite Hemingway novel, either, but it deserves its accolades. I should probably revisit this one sometime now that I am older.

Pleasantly surprised. I finished it in one day.

I‘ve had this book since 1991, end of fourth grade, when my teacher was doling out most of her book collection to her students (my mom told me later she was going through a nasty divorce and was returning stateside after the school year ended). Tried and failed before, but it‘s been calling to me recently. Glad I listened. Sneaked in under the 30-year mark!

What book has been on your TBR longest?

Deifio I'd have to check, but I'm too afraid that the pile would bury me alive underneath it...😅 4y
BookNAround I‘ve had The Wings of the Dove by Henry James since I was in high school so more than 30 years. I put it on my #bookspin list so maybe I‘ll actually get to it sooner rather than later. 4y

November's pick for our Tequila Mockingbird book club and as I've been rereading this I'm pleasantly surprised that I'm actually enjoying it this time.

Becker I thought this book had such a sense of being in the moment. I read it as a teenager and I had never experienced that before. It made a lasting impression on me. 4y

July 2019 at the beach in OC, MD: Great book to read at the ocean 😄. I was first disappointed when I realized the whole book was around one single action that in reality does not interest me at all but then I concentrated on the main character instead of “the action“ and saw how there was deeper stuff to look at. A book about resilience to me.

Just finished this masterpiece. Each and every word is where it should be, each word has purpose and meaning. Also, terrible feeling of melancholy in the last pages of the book.

You can pick this up and finish reading it within the span of one afternoon in the coffee shop. Then, you can go home and finish thinking** about it over the next 5 years.

Read on a stormy morning, perfect for one sitting. Hemingway remains one of my favorite authors for his poignant characters and psychology. If he includes a detail, it's both important and beautiful.

alisiakae I love that book! I had the opportunity to meet Gregorio Fuentes when I was in Cuba in 2000, one of Hemingway's first mates on his boat Pilar. Some people think Fuentes was the inspiration for Santiago, and in his later life he became a tourist attraction in his own right! 5y

I know this is a "beloved classic" but honestly, I was pretty bored most of the time. I felt bad for the old man and his unluckiness, and his diametric love for and drive to kill the fish was interesting, but the fish chase drug on sooooooo long. I'm glad the old man held on to hope and kept fighting. I actually would have preferred to hear more of the old man and the boy's relationship, and less of his solitary hunt. Oh well.

Ruthiella This book drove me nuts too! A short book that took far too long! I‘ve read other Hemingway that I‘ve enjoyed more. 😀 (edited) 6y
RachLovesTV @Ruthiella I should probably give another one a try, which ones of his did you like? 6y
Ruthiella I‘m not a huge fan of his fiction. I liked The Sun Also Rises OK. What I loved was his memoir of his years in Paris: A Movable Feast. 😀 6y

First Hemingway since high school. Visceral and entertaining: I thought this would be more of a philosophical exercise, rather than an adventure story. There's something especially thrilling about action and drama on the sea- parts of this reminded me of the great moments in Moby Dick. Some misogynist moments when the wildness of sea creatures are given feminine comparisons. Too bad Hemingway had this gender bias- definitely limits his legacy.

jmofo @Billypar Limits! That is exactly it. I love some of the moments he writes so much but yeah, he can be a gross, horrible jerk. I learned that Ron Pearlman‘s cast to play him in a film. I never would have seen a movie about him but maybe, MAYBE, if it is written honestly and if Ron Pearlman‘s in it. 6y
mklong Love your picture 😂 6y
Billypar @jmofo It's a frustrating thing when reading some classic authors- so talented but it can ruin an otherwise good book when racism or sexism crops up (not that extreme for TOMATS but still there). Ron Pearlman is a great casting choice. I don't remember the actor's name from Midnight in Paris, but I think he did a good job puttering EH, though it would have to be a younger version than the role they have Parkman cast in. 6y

Too obvious?

A story that wasn't ruined for me by required reading in school... I first read this in a college class my freshman year and loved it enough that I've kept my old copy.

Sace I had to read this is high school and I hated it then. I went back and read it a couple of years ago and I loved it so much!! 7y
sprainedbrain @RestlessFickleBookSlut I need to do that with a few books I hated in high school... I think I was too young to appreciate some of them. 7y

Sace @sprainedbrain I totally agree that sometimes high school is too young to appreciate the classics. 7y
JaclynW I haven't read this, but have my husband's old school copy. I've read other books by Hemingway but haven't loved them. Although, as a person, he kind of fascinates me. Have you read other Hemingway books? If so, how does this compare to those? 7y
sprainedbrain @JaclynW the only other Hemingway that I have read is For Whom the Bell Tolls, and I liked that one, too. I keep meaning to read more of his work. I recently read a book about Zelda Fitzgerald and went on a google spree, which lead me back to Hemingway... he did have a fascinating life. I should probably read more! 7y
JaclynW I've read For Whom the Bell Tolls and I enjoyed/was mesmerized by parts but overall I just wanted it to end! 😕 The Fitzgeralds and Hemingways certainly crossed paths many times, it is fascinating for sure. I've read up on it a bit and always want to know more. I bought A Moveable Feast (at Shakespeare & Company!) this summer in Paris while I was there. It's all about Hemingway's time in Paris. I'm excited to dig in and hoping I will like it. 7y
