Wild Nights! | Joyce Carol Oates
post image

Wild Nights is JC Oates' collection of stories on the final days of five American authors (Poe, Dickinson, Samuel Clemens, Henry James & Hemingway). Oates frequently explores the disparity between the public perception & the real life of the author (esp in the case of Clemens & Hemingway where they are performing the parts of Twain & Papa in public). There is also a great deal of ambiguity in each story. The first one, Poe Posthumous could (CONT)

vivastory be interpreted as a science experiment gone horribly wrong. One could also make a compelling argument that the entire story is imagined by Poe as he died from rabies. Then there is the very uncomfortable story about Twain. The collection has a fantastic preface by Oates, which is a sort of essay on the art of the short story. I loved this imaginative collection & agree with the NPR quote on the back, “The triumphant paradox here is that (CONT) (edited) 3w
vivastory in their dying Oates brings these writers ferociously back to life.“ 3w
Tkimsal Oates is sometimes challenging but, for me, always worth the effort! 3w

vivastory @Tkimsal I haven't read her novels, but I love her short stories. 3w
LeahBergen Well, this sounds interesting! 3w
Branwen Okay, Joyce Carol Oates is usually such a hit or miss with me - but your review really makes me want to check this one out! 2w
vivastory @Branwen I've only read her stories which I've had a lot of luck with. Her story The Doll-Master has stuck with me years after reading it. It's one of the creepiest I've read. I also really liked the anthology she edited American Gothic 2w

My favourite, and I love the ambiguity over the interpretation (I rarely agree with historians when it comes to most topics on literature and poetry, and this time is no different) 🤍🤎.

“If you keep talking like that you‘ll end up with no husband to love you. Alone in that house you want to buy so badly, surrounded by books and cats.” I snort and cast my eyes on the steeple of a cathedral that reminds me of home. He may think this is some great threat to me but….there are worse things. I see him looking at me out of the corner of his eye and I turn to him and give him a bright smile.
“Love is fickle. Books are eternal.”

Meet Hemingway, the library cat.

He has literally lived around my library branch for six years now & we think he was abandoned . For the last two years that I have worked there, he has always run away from everyone.

Monday night upon leaving, he came out up to me meowing. Tuesday morning, the same.

He had two infected teeth & some flea infestation otherwise in good health. He now has a clean bill of health after all the vet care.

ElizaMarie He is beautiful! 2mo

I liked the uncertainty the writer gave the reader until the end. I chose this book as I visited Key West, where it is set. The terms of endearment were creepy, but that was not the author's doing but rather a true account within this story.

I‘ve mislaid my in progress book so when it didn‘t turn up immediately, I grabbed this to start. And now the furs have settled in so there‘s no switching up books.

#12Booksof2023 July saw me finally pulling this off my shelves, and it both totally lives up to its hype, and falls into one of my favorite niche genres, groups of artists riffing off of and inspiring one another. @Andrew65

Andrew65 Lokks a good read, only read one by this author and really enjoyed it. 4mo

Mehso-so

Tragedy forces Delphine from her home in post-war Paris to Harlem, NY, then onto Havana, Cuba. She is an aspiring writer trying to follow in the footsteps of Hemingway, the man she believes is her father.

While Delphine shows amazing growth by the end of the book, I found her insufferable and selfish for most of it.

Delightful. Short. A look at Hemmingway‘s life in Paris 1921-26, driven to write while still happily married and still unknown. Oh, there are many reasons to visit the Louve, but the reason given here was a new one for me. ☺️
