I really appreciated this book; the style is straightforward, and easy to understand. I also firmly believe in exposing yourself to experiences outside of your own. This is a great way to do that (assuming you aren‘t a queer Muslim women, in which case, it‘s a great read anyway! :) )

I‘m a little late to the game here but I loved this book. It was so unique and compelling. The style made me feel like I was watching a documentary or something and it was wonderful. Easy read, as well!

Enh. It was fine. Too slow and long for my liking. Some of the relationships also didn‘t feel real to me. I almost abandoned this one, and won‘t be following the series. 🤷‍♀️

This was a really quick and lovely read; it can be read in a couple of hours and leaves you with a nice warm, fuzzy feeling 😊 I can‘t quite say why, but it gave me Le Petit Prince (on of my all time favourites), vibes.

Pros: this book has excellent world building and wonderful prose (which sometimes gets to be too much, honestly, and it‘s easy to get lost in a sentence). Cons: hard to get into, and an ended that feels a bit empty. Once I got I to this book I did not want to put it down, but about 2/3 of the way in it lost that quality for me, and the plot took turns that felt out of place in my view. Good, not great.

The Song of Achilles | Madeline Miller

I‘ve always been a fan of world mythologies, so I may be biased, but this was so good. I had always been told the story as though Patroclus and Achilles were cousins who loved each other “like brothers”, but this is a much more true and convincing narrative of their relationship. A perfect book for Pride 🌈

lorannen One of my favorites! It's one of those that I wish I could go back and read for the first time all over again. If you haven't picked it up yet, I highly recommend Miller's second novel, Circe. 5y
Vulpixen @lorannen yes it was great! I do intend to pick up Circe in the near future :) 5y

I wanted to love this book. The story is something I would ordinarily get into and the prose is beautiful. However, I struggled with this one. The story is just too slow and it takes too long for everything to “click”. When the click finally happened, I just didn‘t really care anymore.

This book was so beautiful and heartbreaking. What a wonderful exploration of family through the generations, with all of the flaws of those people and the heartache that can plague a family during that time. Power and colonialism are huge themes, and I think they are dealt with well. It can be hard to read sometimes because a lot of what happens is horrible, but it‘s worth it in the end. When I finished I was actually shaking. Highly recommend.

I‘m about 75% through this book, which has been pushed hard at Indigo, and honestly I have mixed feelings. The writing is lovely and whimsical, which I appreciate, and the narrator of the audiobook is good, but the story really hasn‘t grabbed me. Hopefully it picks up for the last leg, because at this point I don‘t really care much about what happens.

Generally I‘m of the view that it shouldn‘t take 4 volumes to be able to determine what‘s going on, but the art and goof idea kept me coming back, and I‘m glad it did. I‘m finally getting the story!

This book hooked me. I have to say that the first 1/4 of it was my favourite and wholly engaging. After that it dropped slightly for me, but I still found it very interesting, and one of the most unique explorations of what a war can do to a person, and what a person may choose to do in light of her circumstances, that I‘ve read. Not perfect, but I very much enjoyed it.

I read this on a recommendation from a friend. I like thrillers. I‘m into crime. What isn‘t there to like? A lot. I would have bailed on this early if I wasn‘t reading this for a friend. A book that should have been right up my alley, but ended up being such a disappointment.

I was lukewarm on this book until about 4/5 of the way in, when I got so touching I actually cried, which doesn‘t happen often for me! It was a slow-burn, but also a fairly short read. It was also quite different from anything I‘ve read before.

I read this for a book club, otherwise I would have put it down halfway through. It was slow and really not effective at making the reader feel what it obviously wants the reader to feel. It has good ideas, but I really didn‘t think it pulled it off. Unless you want a really passive, predictable read, I would say pass on this.
