Boneshaker | Cherie Priest
61 posts | 79 read | 73 to read
In the early days of the Civil War, rumors of gold in the frozen Klondike brought hordes of newcomers to the Pacific Northwest. Anxious to compete, Russian prospectors commissioned inventor Leviticus Blue to create a great machine that could mine through Alaska's ice. Thus was Dr. Blue's Incredible Bone-Shaking Drill Engine born. But on its first test run the Boneshaker went terribly awry, destroying several blocks of downtown Seattle and unearthing a subterranean vein of blight gas that turned anyone who breathed it into the living dead. Now it is sixteen years later, and a wall has been built to enclose the devastated and toxic city. Just beyond it lives Blue's widow, Briar Wilkes. Life is hard with a ruined reputation and a teenaged boy to support, but she and Ezekiel are managing. Until Ezekiel undertakes a secret crusade to rewrite history. His quest will take him under the wall and into a city teeming with ravenous undead, air pirates, criminal overlords, and heavily armed refugees. And only Briar can bring him out alive.

#BookReport
Managed to finish off three of my reads this week which felt amazing because it seemed like I was making no progress at all for a while.

#WeeklyForecast
Goal this week is to finish Labrynth Lost then dig more into Orphan's Tale. The Heinlein should go pretty fast as it's my commute book.

This was a weird mashup of alt history, steampunk, and zombies of all thing but it kind of worked for me lol. I did the audio and Kate Reading and Wil Wheaton were the perfect portrayal of their POV characters. Wil Wheaton really sold the troublesome teenager angle. Overall this was fun and I liked the way the characters came together through adversity.

I can't believe the #BookSpin reminder has gone out again already! New to the list this month are the tagged and Foreigner. I'm optimistic I'll finally make more progress on my picks for the year since I finally got the one that was good but slow going out of the way.

I listened to an audio version of this. Wil Wheaton read the part of the son. I really enjoyed his narration. The story was also quite good. I'm curious to read the next book in the series.

An awesome steampunk adventure with two great narrators! Love the world Priest established; Seattle has become a biohazard zone after Leviticus Blue drov his Boneshaker drill under the city, releasing the "blight," a gas that turns people into shambling monsters. When Briar Wilkes' son goes under the city wall to find answers, she has to go after him and see for herself what the city's become after 15 years.

Just finished this #steampunk pick up for #booked2018!

It was a lot of steampunky fun, with blight zombies and airships galore! I loved all the adult characters introduced but the teenage son character fell pretty flat for me. I think the rest of the books in this series follow other character‘s perspectives so I‘ll definitely check those out. Cherie Priest! 🙌🏼

It's real slow in the beginning, (no joke, it took me several days to get through the first few hours), but it is worth it for all the badass older ladies, some fantastic world building, and a twist I did not predict at all.

And with all the love and respect possible, Wil Wheaton does whiny teenage boy real well. 😂

I'm in this weird place where I'm more looking forward to the next one than I think I liked this one. 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

TobeyTheScavengerMonk I agree with all of this! Somehow this book was less than the sum of it‘s admittedly cool parts. 6y

What to read next? Looking at these three. Ghost Bride? The Nest ? Or Boneshaker?

Jess7 I have only read The Nest of those three. I liked it. It‘s very much a character study type book - not a lot happens during the book but the characters are all very flawed and interesting. It is packed with family drama. 6y

Though I certainly enjoyed this one, I can't help but admit I could have enjoyed it more.

It had a lot of really great elements, from anachronistic inventions to blight gas induced zombies, and a fun plot with just the right amount of tension and surprises. However, it generally felt a bit rushed. There were so many things I would have liked to spend more time on.

Still, overall, quite a fun read.

Started reading this on audio (read by Kate Reading and Wil Wheaton) on recommendation from @elkeo .... so far, loving it!! 👍🏽👍🏽 Let's see... a machine is built in the late 1800s in alternative Seattle and either malfunctions or is used with ill intent, either way resulting in the destruction of the city, the death of many, and potentially the release of toxic gas that causes the city to be quarantined. Fast forward 15'ish years to this book..
