The Serpent King
The Serpent King | Jeff Zentner
Dillard Early, Jr., Travis Bohannon and Lydia Blankenship are three friends from different walks of life who have one thing in common: none of them seem to fit the mold in rural Tennessee's Forrestville High. Dill has always been branded as an outsider due to his family heritage as snake handlers and poison drinkers, an essential part of their Pentecostal faith. But after his father is sent to prison for sexual abuse of a young parishioner, Dill and his mother become real pariahs. His only two friends are Travis, a gentle giant who works at his family's lumberyard and is obsessed with a Game of Thrones-like fantasy series (much to his alcoholic father's chagrin); and Lydia, who runs a popular fashion blog that's part Tavi Gevinson and part Angela Chase, and is actively plotting her escape from Redneckville, Tennessee. As the three friends begin their senior year, it becomes clear that they won't all be getting to start a promising new life after graduation. How they deal with their diverging paths could cause the end of their friendship. Until a shattering act of random violence forces Dill to wrestle with his dark legacy and find a way into the light of a future worth living.

I loved this book! I loved the characters, the writing was very good, and it was really cool to read a book set in rural TN (where I lived for a while). I‘ll read more by this author!

The only snakes in my house are the dog and cat‘s toys, though I have had pet snakes in the past.

I would highly recommend this book, but see spoiler below for triggers if needed.

This is the first book I‘ve read from my summer swap box, thank you @Megnogged !

Soubhiville Possible triggers: child abuse, depression, suicide. 6mo
Hooked_on_books I‘m impressed at the intactness of your dog toy. That doesn‘t happen in my house! 😂 6mo
Soubhiville @Hooked_on_books this one has lasted a surprisingly long time! It‘s one of the tougher ones, and 2 of the 3 squeakers still work. I think she got it in a Litsy swap, might have been last summer! 6mo
Hooked_on_books @Soubhiville Gunther was the real destroyer. I‘d give him the ones labeled extra tough and he‘d still have them ripped open in under 10 minutes. It‘s one thing I don‘t miss about him. Bindi takes much longer to destroy toys and loves the nested hedgehog toy I got from you (and had to hide from Gunther). All parts are still in good shape! 6mo
Soubhiville @Hooked_on_books ah, that‘s cool. Sietje has one like that with squirrels, and they are intact but don‘t squeak anymore. She loves to incessantly squeeze the squeakers until they stop making noise. 🤣. She used to unstuff toys when she was younger, not so much these days. She will go to town on a chew toy though! Nylabone type especially. 6mo

Done! (Doesn‘t mean I‘m gonna stop reading though! 🤣)

I‘m only about halfway through The Serpent King, but I think it‘s my favorite read from this readathon. The main characters are 3 friends, seniors in a rural TN high school, each with their own quirkiness and challenges in life. I can‘t wait to see where this story goes!

My #favorite of this #24in48 was far & away The Serpent King ♥️
A coming-of-age story about 3 misfits, this book has so much heart. I laughed; I cheered; I wept - truly sobbed, tears pouring down my face. And I was reminded how real life is for some kids at a young age.
The dialogue is fresh & sincere. The circumstances of each friend ring true. And the love they feel for each other is palpable.
I tore through this one - read it!

It's been a while since I've read a book in one sitting, but that's what I did two days ago, from 8.30pm-12.30am. It may have been a bit predictable, but what struck me about Zentner is how well he writes dialogue. Several times, I found myself nodding, thinking that was exactly what a character in that situation would have said. Thoroughly enjoyable.

So cool to see so many references to your hometown in a book! The protagonist ends up going to Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), where I am a professor! Also found shout-outs to the TN Ren Faire, nearby Cookeville, & other colleges and high schools within driving distance. Made me smile every time I saw a place I recognized. ☺

The first day of senior year is when you realize that summer might never again mean what it used to. Before you even enter a classroom you learn that life is composed of a finite number of summers, passing us by in a haze of ice cream, fireflies, chlorine-scented hair, & skin that smells like coconut sunblock. We live in a series of moments & seasons & sense memories strung end to end to form a sort of story. (continued in comments)

Whet a book! I think I enjoyed it! One character battles depression quite extensively and at the risk of sounding unsympathetic, it was overdone. I got so tired of his whiney mentality and his "woe is me's". Rather than fixing the problem, he wallowed! Other than that, I really liked this one!

High school senior Dill feels like he can‘t escape his family‘s past. His dad, the leader of a religious cult, is in jail and his mom overworks herself to pay off legal debts. The only solace he has is with his two friends, Travis and Lydia, and his music. He looks towards no college until a tragedy forces him to reconsider his future.

An amazing portrayal of southern teens who do not exactly "fit in". Dill, Travis, and Lydia are very different but have formed a tight bond. Difficult situations abound, but so do light-hearted funny moments. These characters felt like real-life teenagers trying their best in a world where they didn't quite fit. An excellent #audiobook from #libby enhanced my reading experience. Loved it ♥️?

Set deep in the Bible Belt of Tennessee, I liked that Zentner didn‘t treat faith versus obsession heavy-handedly. Honestly, as a skeptic, I was unsure if I could connect with these teens, but Zentner made their faith realistic, not contrived, and their stories lovely without devolving to cliche. My one complaint was that some details were unrealistically used to move the plot. I wish there was a rating between “Pick” and “So-So”. 👍🏻

Since this year I'm trying to redo books that are already in my TBR pile, I thought I should do this one as my second book for audio reading on my road trip. All I know about this book was that it was once an owl crate book. I don't, as a rule, like contemporary books. As such I don't particularly enjoy this, but it was bearable enough for me to listen to.
