1984 (School & Library)
1984 (School & Library) | George Orwell
1984 has come and gone, but George Orwell's prophetic, nightmare vision in 1949 of the world we were becoming is timelier than ever. "1984" is still the great modern classic "negative Utopia" - a startling original and haunting novel that creates an imaginary world that is completely convincing from the first sentence to the last four words. No one can deny this novel's power, its hold on the imagination of whole generations, or the power of its admonitions - a power that seems to grow, not lessen, with the passage of time.

Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing.

Gave this a reread. In today‘s current climate, this is more horrifying than ever. It definitely meant more to me today than in my 20s.

SquidgetsRoom I read this is HS & wasn‘t a fan but, bought it not long ago for a reread as well. Thought maybe I‘d be better able to appreciate it now that the world is the way it is. 2w

#30junebooks @howjessreads I know a lot of people love this book, and I know that it‘s an important book, but this is one that I #DNF. It was just too miserable for me at the time.

melissanorr I had to read that twice - once in high school and once in college. I despised it both times. #unpopularopinion 3w
IamIamIam Not all classics are what they're cracked up to be! I read this once & hated it. I prefer this as a commentary on society today: 3w
ImperfectCJ I agree with @IamIamIam ... Fahrenheit 451 is so relevant, it's scary. My teen and I read it together recently and it seeded some interesting conversations. 3w

"INTP: science fiction" thanks @rretzler for sharing this bustle article that tells you what you enjoy reading based on your personality type. https://www.bustle.com/p/the-genre-of-book-you-need-to-be-reading-based-on-your-.... I always get INTP so I'm science fiction?? which I agree with as long as it's existential and along the lines of Orwell or ray Bradbury ?‍♀️ if only there was a category for vampire romance lol

rretzler Orwell and Bradbury are two of my favorite authors! I‘m stuck halfway between INTJ and INTP so I‘m with you on the SciFi and I love mysteries too. 3w

A good article on the book‘s relevancy today but beware, it describes how doublethink exists on both sides of the aisle at present.

Read in The Atlantic: https://apple.news/AK11mi7vLSTuBLX8uoBzwvQ

Patchshank I found it interesting. Thank you for sharing. 1mo
tjwill Thanks for sharing! 1984 has been a favorite book for a long time, but I don‘t know that I could reread it anymore with so many things in it becoming familiar to our time, unlike when I first read it (in 2000). 1mo
Jeralyn That was a great article, thanks for posting it:) 1mo
See All 6 Comments
Texreader @Patchshank @tjwill @Jeralyn I feel so old; I read this for the first time in the early 1980s, probably right around 1984. Being of a libertarian-bent (of the live and let live variety) who views all politics suspiciously, I have always felt the book was familiar. But true, maybe more so nowadays. 1mo
Patchshank I think the article made a good point about us carrying big brother around in our pockets. We just accept all this invasive technology and encourage it and pay money for it. I've always thought we were a mix of 1984 and brave New world, and too a certain extent Fahrenheit 451. We can be controlled through use of distractions rather than directly controlled like in 1984. But I think our politics follow closely with 1984, as the article pointed out. 1mo

Halfway between Pick and So-So, and landed on Pick primarily because the societal trends that this book addresses really resonate right now, despite the fact that this book was written in the 40‘s. I think it‘s important for anyone to read this book, but over all it left me feeling deflated. This book evokes a such a weird conglomeration of emotions...

Megabooks @LiterRohde I understand. I think, in 30 years, when I‘m 70, or possibly sooner, I won‘t understand fame at all. All these YouTube stars and Instagram influencers have me 🤷🏻‍♀️. I sort of get reality TV, but with YouTube, Instagram, and Cameo, there are so many more ways to monetize fame from one season or one episode even of a reality show or viral video. Sometimes I feel stuck in the stone age of old Hollywood or just the 20th century! 😂 2mo

Can't believe this is the first time I've read this book... I don't even have words to describe how this made me feel. Scared, paranoid, enlightened, none of these are enough. I feel like I've learned a lot but almost wish I haven't.. but I guess that's the point - ignorance is bliss and "Ignorance is Strength"

You ever read a book but feel like you're not even close to finished with it? That's how I'm feeling now. Gotta read some HG Wells next!

Week 4 of #MayMadness #BannedBooks
TBH I was shocked how many books were banned books including #AlicesAdventureinWonderland?! & Lord of the Ring? Here are a small stack of banned books I could find right away😆 I have read most of them here except #Fahrenheit451 & The Communist Manifesto which belongs to my daughter. Other banned books not pictured here are LOTR, To Kill a Mocking Bird & my favorite : Of Mice & Man.
Which one are you reading?

BooknerdsLife I remember loving Catcher in The Rye a lot when I was in high school and probably the only book in this stack that I‘ve reread. But I also love Brave New World, Of Mice and Man & Animal Farm ... & of course Alice‘s Adventure in Wonderland will always be my absolute favorite! ❤️ 2mo

Francophones! Last year, Gallimard published a “new“ translation of 1984, touted as the best yet, but within weeks experts found it was just a better stylised version of the canonical translation. Mssing sentences, contradictions between paragraphs. TL;DR don't buy that one. Éditions de la rue Dorion have just released a true new translation by Célia Izoard, who knows her stuff. Get that one.

Mehso-so

Finished this book a couple days ago. I wasn‘t overwhelmed to be honest. And it could be because I set the bar too high. Orwell discusses the same concept with Animal Farm, wherein there‘s always a higher and lower society and that history always ends up “changing”. If you ask me, both are similar and unique in a way. But #animalfarm is still my favorite.

rretzler Interesting take. I read both books many years ago, and 1984 was one of my favorites. I always felt that Animal Farm was Orwell's commentary on the politics of that time (more specifically the Russian revolution,) while 1984, having some similarities, was his take on where he felt the future might be going. I have found it prophetic in many ways over the years as we sacrifice personal freedom for “protection“, especially as technology is developed 2mo
vumblereads @rretzler Yes I think that‘s a big discussion revolving around the book. I guess I should give it more credit knowing that it was written earlier than it was 1984. When Winston, the main character, started reading Goldstein‘s book, it reminded me so much of Animal Farm. 🙂 2mo
gilroyc I always felt that 1984 was a touch more subtle than Animal Farm. 2mo
See All 6 Comments
vumblereads Subtle in what way @gilroyc ? 🙂 2mo
gilroyc Personal opinion: Animal Farm is a steady dropping of bricks as the pigs are constantly betraying their original thoughts. 1984 has more of a thriller feel with when and how, so the bricks are slid in, rather than dropped. 2mo
vumblereads @gilroyc 😂 yes they‘re always changing their opinions and everyone else is dumb enough to believe it, but it‘s just like in 1984! One minute they‘re at war with Eurasia, the next they‘re at war with Eastasia and they were never ever at war with eurasia 🤷🏻‍♀️ I get it George Orwell, people lied to you! 😅 2mo
