“I saw Johnny‘s cigarette glowing in the dark sand and ordered vaguely what it was like inside a burning ember.” ~ Ponyboy Curtis
I missed the boat on reading S.E Hinton‘s The Outsiders as a high schooler, but after Episode 56 of my podcast, I‘m now officially caught up! We talk about the pop culture resonance of “Stay gold, Ponyboy,” Hinton‘s fascinating portrayal of masculinity, her journey from (literal) teen to publishing sensation, and the story‘s still relevant representation of marginalized teens. Link to listen in bio!
My son isn‘t a reader; he‘s a gamer. But he‘s read The Outsiders three times this year. He likes it that much, and that makes this mama happy 😄 Hope everyone has had a great Monday! Mine went so smoothly at work, I‘m in a great mood! 😊
The outsiders was a book I read a while ago but if I recall I really enjoyed it. For those who enjoy realistic fiction and from a point of vue from the mid sixties this is a novel for you. It tells the story of friendship, hardship, gangs, and what life was like in the sixties. I highly recommend the outsiders for anyone who enjoys classics or simply an enjoyable, thought provoking read.
I find it such a privilege to teach high school students and to influence them to love reading as much as I do. Cannot wait to teach my year 8 kiddies this novel for the next 10 weeks and compare it to the film! Watch this space! #englishteachersoflitsy
Humor for today:
My student comes up to me right before his final exam, and says, “You know the Socs, in The Outsiders? Apparently it‘s pronounced ‘Soashes‘...”
I read the entire story out loud in class, and I‘d been calling them the “Socks” 🤦🏻♀️
Struggles of reading an unfamiliar word in a book 😂
Just finished this gem! I taught this for my summer school English session. It was both my and my student‘s first time reading it!
So many moments of 😮 throughout this book. The ending had us both like 🤯! I personally loved the assortment of characters and their developments, as well as the theme of “Don‘t judge a book by it‘s cover”.
Stay gold, everyone. 💛🍃🍂
When I stepped out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home.

Oh my god, how did I never read this before??? Such a great exploration on perceptions of masculinity and class. Stay gold, Ponyboy, stay gold... 😭😭😭 🌅
Yesterday I posted a photo of my latest copy of The Outsiders. I felt like it was strictly for adding to my collection. But after I snapped the photo and posted here, I opened up the book to read my favorite opening line of all time and I kept reading until I finished the book. 🤣 Stay Gold! 🌅 Image from Google. If you are over 45 you probably remember these guys. 😍
I‘ve lost track of how many copies I have of this book. I will never forget the first time I read it. I was home sick and this was the assigned reading for my Novels class. I read it in one sitting and started all over and read it again. By the time I got back to school I practically had the entire novel memorized. Even though there have been many books I have loved, this one will always hold a special place in my heart. I have multiple editions.
This was one of my favorite quotes from The Outsiders. I remember reading this book in middle school. Anyone else?

🎬Last Saturday the whole family went to see Avengers Endgame. I snuggled up in a comfy blanket and had a favorite snack on hand. BTW, I‘m still not okay 😢
🖐🏻@EmilyM, have you done this?
Loving my treadmill audiobook time and loved this book! Maybe we‘re not all so different after all and I wish we could all stay gold. I guess my next book will have to be Gone With the Wind now
I just can‘t with The Master & Margarita. I‘ve given it 100+ pages, and I can‘t attach to it.
This is my SECOND 1967 book I‘m DNF‘ing 😳
But I‘m running - not walking - to The Outsiders, eager to finally read this classic.
Here‘s hoping the 3rd time is the charm ❤️
This story about greasers vs. socs holds up well. Ponyboy is a greaser, loyal to his brothers and crew, but willing to look beyond labels and question the assumptions everyone in his town makes about each other. Nice depiction of male friendship between Ponyboy and Johnny. Pretty impressive that the author was only 16 when she started this novel. Now I need to see the movie. “Stay gold, ponyboy.”
I listened to this one on audio and it's been a decade or more since I had read through it. One of my favorite books as a teen, I just love Ponyboy's story and struggles. I remember loving to escape into a world worse than my own with terrors I'd never faced. The message is so clear and I just love all the characters so much. I've watched the movie a million times as well and may want to rewatch it again soon. #litsyatoz #o
#Fridaynightbookclub in Oz is actually #Saturdaymorningbookclub I‘m reading in bed by candlelight to start the day off slowly before I go for a walk up the hill to vote, beach time then get my hair done in preparation for my partner taking me to a harp performance at Bar Petite tomorrow night. I‘m very lucky to live right above great restaurants in the middle of the city but also have a view of the beach. This book is required reading for school.
Loved, loved, loved this book and I can‘t believe I hadn‘t read it before now. And it didn‘t make me cry just a little bit, honest!
A definite ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me.
So I am super late to the game here, but I just found out this week that SE Hinton is a woman. Susan Eloise Hinton wrote The Outsiders when she was only 19 years old in 1967. I find this extremely impressive for the time, especially given the success of the book.

The best cast ever and a brilliant film about class and friendship. Book is equally wonderful.
