I really like to read Poirot Books. He is my favourite Agatha Christie detective. This one had me right to the end. I also love the banter between Hastings and Poirot so very much. I didn‘t guess the killer in this one at all. I did figure out one of the mysteries but not the important one. This one is a good light, short read. As always I recommend, but it‘s unlikely I wouldn‘t when it‘s Hercule Poirot.

An excellent mystery. I love the classic Poirot stories with a hotel or old house setting and range of suspects. Again it‘s brilliantly plotted with a interesting solution. I love the lightness of the prose and sense of humour. She does not try to overcomplicate it, Poirot is such a great character & the fun is in watching him solve the mystery. A satisfying read.

I enjoyed this one more than the last few, it was more fun, and the ending was unpredictable, at least to me. I also enjoyed some of the side characters more than in past books.

Ooh! I like this one! Satisfyingly twisty and only a little vertiginous. Between the audio during my morning workout and cutting out mask fabric and then the ebook during lunch and while waiting for my son to finish his grammar, I finished this in less than one day.

Narrated by Captain Hastings, Peril at End House is a Poirot mystery set in the fictional town of St Loo located in the south of England. The town is said be based on Torquay in the South Devon region of the UK.

Nick Buckley is the owner of End House, and has faced some life threatening attempts. She refuses to take them seriously until Poirot makes her realise otherwise, and steps in to investigate. Nick‘s friends, family, & acquaintances 👇🏽

Tanisha_A get questioned from time to time and the mystery unfolds with an extraordinary last scene. A satisfying read! 3y

Poirot has retired and is spending some time in a seaside town in Southern England. One day he starts talking to Freddie and she tells him about several accidents that has happened the last week. When she leaves, he finds her hat with a bullet hole in it. Poirot decides to investigate.

I didn‘t not see the twist at the end, so once again Madam Christie had me fooled.

Another great mystery solved by Poirot 🕵🏼‍♂️
I enjoyed this one a lot because it kept me guessing. I didn't see the twist coming at the end!
Poirot and Hastings are on vacation when they meet a woman who has had many recent brushes with death that can't be coincidence. Poirot must protect her and find the culprit before a murder occurs!
Poirot from Hastings' perspective never ceases to entertain me. They make a great pair.

4. Peril at End House is considered one of Christie's best books. Would you agree? What makes this one stand out? How would you rank the books we've read so far?

#agathachristieclubR2

Clare-Dragonfly What am I looking at here? Is that Gritty?! (Sorry, I‘m not in the book club, this image just caught my attention!) 3y
janeycanuck I definitely think it‘s one of the best I‘ve read. I really love when a couple of disparate stories come together to provide a full explanation instead of everything from just one little thing. 3y
Laughterhp @janeycanuck I agree. I really liked this one and wasn‘t expecting it to turn out the way it did. This may have been one of my favorites. 3y
See All 6 Comments
ferskner @Clare-Dragonfly hahahaha!!!!! I think it's supposed to be a Chinese dragon on a robe - it got more pixilated than I'd expected. I just looked up Gritty and I'm dying! @janeycanuck @Laughterhp yeah this one is a favorite, but I always seem to forget how much I love it when I think about ranking her books. Nick is just so twisted and the way everything fits together is really satisfying. I'd love to see a really great, chilling adaptation of this. 3y
TheAromaofBooks I do love this one a lot - & it's another one where Christie plays fair with the readers, making me feel more like Hastings than ever 😂 I agree @ferskner - with the right actress playing Nick, this could be a brilliant movie. It's one where it doesn't seem dark until you get to the reveal & suddenly realize that undertone has been there all along. I picture it with that Hitchcock vibe of being something being “off“ @Laughterhp @janeycanuck 3y
ferskner @TheAromaofBooks yeah yeah yeah! I like the David Suchet adaptation but it's not as chilling as I think this story could go. @Laughterhp @janeycanuck 3y

3. What motivates Poirot? #agathachristieclubR2

janeycanuck Ego? Impatience? I don‘t think he can let something unsolved go. The same way I can‘t let a bar of chocolate go uneaten. The thought of it just consumes him and he can‘t stand the idea that someone less competent will not get things perfectly right or as quickly as he would. 3y
Laughterhp @janeycanuck Definitely his ego and I think he likes to help people. He of course is also always trying to show people how clever he is. 3y
ferskner @janeycanuck @Laughterhp LOL bar of chocolate LOL!!!! I agree with everything you've said, butt I also think he has a nearly obsessive sense of justice. It comes out more in future books, but I'm always in fascinated by when he decides to let the criminal commit suicide vs. face the justice system. It seems to usually for with what he thinks is just (I think! Correct me if you can think of exceptions.) 3y
See All 6 Comments
TheAromaofBooks Poirot obviously has a huge ego, but I think it's a result rather than a driving force, if that makes sense. He's almost obsessed with truth & justice. In another book he talks about how no one is “worth“ more than another person & I think that's a theme you see repeatedly, that even someone who is poor or not famous (basically “regular“) deserves justice & protection. @janeycanuck @Laughterhp @ferskner 3y
ferskner @TheAromaofBooks yes this is exactly what I was thinking! He is egotistical but isn't elitist. It's an odd combination from what we might expect, but he very often seeks out the outcast figures in whatever scenario he's in. @janeycanuck @Laughterhp 3y
TheAromaofBooks @ferskner “egotistical but not elitist“ is a great description. In a way, I guess what it really is that instead of seeing people divided into different groups & classes, he just sees POIROT at the top & then everyone else is equally stupid below him (with inferior mustaches) 😂 @janeycanuck @Laughterhp 3y

2. Do you think Nick is a different kind of criminal then we've previously seen in Christie? Is she a psychopath?

#agathachristieclubR2

janeycanuck Well, she‘s not playing with a full deck, that‘s for sure. 3y
Laughterhp @janeycanuck Bahaha yes, I‘d definitely say she is different from other killers we‘ve seen so far with Christie. 3y
ferskner @janeycanuck @Laughterhp yeah she seems a step beyond the other murderers we've seen so far, while but being a criminal mastermind like in the thrillers. Most of the others we've seen have been motivated by need or desperation, but Nick is a narcissist and manipulates everyone around her. Even the killer in Roger Ackroyd doesn't seem to be at this level! 3y
See All 8 Comments
TheAromaofBooks Yes, her complete self-absorption is just amazing. Not to get into spoilers, but I think we see a similar sort of killer in Lord Edgware Dies - when someone becomes so self-obsessed as to only consider people as obstacles, bad things happen!!! @janeycanuck @Laughterhp @ferskner 3y
Laughterhp @TheAromaofBooks That was my thought as well. But I think I read that one early, so didn‘t want to say anything 😊 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Laughterhp - Theoretically we should have read that one in January, although who knows if it's actually happened 😂 I also get a little mixed up because I've read almost all of these multiple times before so sometimes I get a little muddled! 3y
ferskner @TheAromaofBooks YES that's a great comparison! I wonder what was on Christie's mind to write two characters like this almost back to back? @janeycanuck @Laughterhp 3y
TheAromaofBooks @ferskner - Right?? I wonder if she had someone specific in mind?? @janeycanuck @Laughterhp 3y

Laughterhp @janeycanuck I really liked this one. I definitely didn‘t see the twist coming. 3y
ferskner @janeycanuck @Laughterhp I really loved this one too! I think it's very clever and tricksy, while having everything right in front of us. It also plays on our perceptions of women. 3y

This felt so familiar to me but I‘ve been keeping track of every book I‘ve read since I was 16 and it‘s nowhere to be found... This was a reread for me, but as usual I couldn't remember how it ended, so I was completely sucked in. 😂 I genuinely enjoy Poirot and Hastings together and while this one wasn't particularly mind-blowing, it was a solid and enjoyable mystery with a believable twist.

TheAromaofBooks @Bookwormjillk - There are a few that are unique and that I remember (like And Then There Were None or The Murder of Roger Ackroyd), but for the most part I'm surprised every time. 😂 A poor memory can be a great aid in enjoying rereads! 3y

This week's #BookReport actually feels productive!! I took it easy on myself for #NovelNovember & focused on some MG & graphic novel reads to help me build up some momentum & it worked!! I'm caught up on my two buddy reads & also checked off six books (the ones checked here plus Entwined & Swamp Thing). I'm officially done with my orchard job & although I'm working on a special project at the greenhouse (thousands of cuttings!) it should be ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) pretty quiet for next couple of months. I'm SO excited about spending more time reading, writing letters (I haven't forgotten you, fellow #LitsyLove members!!!), working on my Etsy shop, experimenting with some new recipes, & catching up with little home projects. And also apparently shopping for all the Litsy swaps that I can't resist. 😂

TheAromaofBooks @Cinfhen - Thank you!! I don't know how much shipping would be offhand, but if you add them to your cart, Etsy should show you automatically how much it would cost to send them to you. Sadly, I'm guessing expensive!! I'd fallen off the #agathachristieclub wagon so thanks to @ferskner for the reminder! This is last month's book—I think—but I wanted to catch up because I read this ages ago. Despite a semi-large cast of characters, this was centred on the interactions between Poirot & Hastings. As I got closer to the end I realised I had completely forgotten "whodunit" so that was fun. Following their trail of deduction was just what I needed while being sick ?

A rather delightful classic Poirot mystery and one of the dwindling number of Agatha Christie books I‘ve never read. I pegged the murderer very early on (I‘ve read almost all the Christies at this point ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ) but the path Poirot and Hastings go on to actually solve the mystery is excellent and delicious in its complexity.
