Sterben
Sterben: Roman | Karl Ove Knausgrd

My second read of this (yes I already read it once, but see I want to reread them before I tackle book six, which I have not read) had me enraptured.

Before I really liked it, but now... Wow. The sections I thought were dull before—I loved them this time! The game changer is that now I consider everything he writes in context of the scale of the whole series, and it makes the accomplishment so much more impressive. I‘m blown away really.

My Sunday ritual includes waking up, making coffee, reading a chapter, watching meet the press with Chuck Todd and then refilling this for the week. It is a glaring reminder that I'm broken. I wallow in self pity and then sometimes rebound and feel better. Currently waiting and hoping for a rebound. At least I am not feeling suicidal as of late. Back to reading

“Then I looked out the window. The sky above the hospital on the other side of the road was cloudless and blue. The low sun glistened on the panes, signs, railings, car hoods. The frozen breath rising from passersby on the pavement made them look as if they were on fire.”

Not sure why but I‘m really feeling this descriptive passage, as I‘m feeling this entire reread of volume one. I‘m definitely glad I‘m diving into this again....

Oh dear..the beginning was so good. Then my struggle to be interested in his struggle became too much to bear. I don‘t often give up on a book but this one I must, at least for now. 😀😀

SamAnne LOL. What is it about some male writers who have to take up so much time and space? 9mo
Heideschrampf I think in a case like this it's perfectly normal. In depth soul searching just ain't a good beach read 9mo
Theaelizabet Good try! I could just never convince myself that I could be interested in his ruminations. 9mo

Suet624 @SamAnne Haha. Some of his ideas were thought provoking and quite interesting. And then something happened. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 9mo
Suet624 @Heideschrampf Funny you should mention that. I could imagine sitting in a beach chair with this book being my only option and at least I‘d finish it. I have a feeling I‘d get a lot out of it eventually. 9mo
Suet624 @Theaelizabet He has teased me from the bookstore shelves for years. 😂😂 9mo
MicheleinPhilly @Theaelizabet SAME. I‘ve always been like, “Why do you think I want to read 6 books about you and your life?” 9mo

Suet624 @Izai.Amorim So true. 9mo
kalinichta Yep, I felt the same way about this book. The beginning was so promising and then... meh... I still haven't picked it back up 9mo
Suet624 @kalinichta I have a sneaky suspicion I won't be picking it up again either. 😉
9mo
Leftcoastzen Generally our tastes are similar, I devoured the series, maybe the minutia of everyday life intrigued me more? But , I am bogged down by the last book.the usual reading too many books at once & a section of like things I want to tell you about history and philosophy.Hard to read about Hitler near the holidays. 8mo
Suet624 I definitely hit a rough patch of minutia and had way too many other books to read. I had been enjoying it before then. I generally read one book at a time so it was slowing my roll. 😁 I might bring it with me for my week on the beach to at least finish it. 8mo

Mehso-so

I have very mixed feelings about this book. I did enjoy parts, especially towards the end. But it was a slog of detail to get there. I finished it a few weeks ago and only now just got round to taking a picture for litsy. But the further I‘ve got from it, the more negative my feelings have become. So I don‘t think I will have the resilience to continue with the series

I'm officially a Knausgaard fan! I didn't think I needed this (because who ever needs a middle-aged western man reminiscing about his life?) but this first part of a six-part memoir has been a much appreciated companion this week. I was hooked a few pages in and haven't been able to put it down! Knausgaard talks about everything in (too) much detail but oh boy, is he readable. I'll be picking up Book Two soon for sure ⚡

4.5/5⭐

I‘ve been finding this a bit heavy going. Only managing a few pages at a time, and finding my attention sliding away from the page as the minute descriptions of a Stockholm street (and everything else) fail to draw me in. But yesterday I finally had a breakthrough with about 100 pages read, including staying up late to carry on reading. I had planned on reading the whole series... but we shall see if I have the willpower!

Well, that's all I need: a middle-aged chap navel-gazing/reminiscing in minute detail and expectation of an audience! ? Except that it turns out I enjoyed it. The man can write. Admittedly I far preferred the more introspective parts to the bathroom-cleaning parts, but I warmed to Knausgaard's self-consciousness (which seems to be at the heart of his "struggle"). I will read more, but not just yet. I'm curious about his Seasons books, now, too.

Has anyone read this? Would love to know what you think!

SusanInTiburon I have actively avoided it because if I‘m going to spend that long in someone‘s head I wouldn‘t choose him first, but my sister - who is a real reader and knows me - says he is worthwhile and unputdownable. So I‘m torn. 2y
mklong The first three are on my shelf, but I have never gotten to them. A friend in my book club is OBSESSED though 2y
vivastory I loved this one. I haven't read further volumes, but definitely plan on it 2y

Faibka @SusanInTiburon @mklong thanks for your comments. I feel very much intrigued but I‘m not sure if I can make that kind of investment unless it‘s truly worth it, so I guess I‘m torn as well. 2y
Faibka @vivastory interesting! I really like your book choices so now I‘m feeling more inclined to give it a try :) thanks 2y
Simona I have read first two so far and I will definitely read the rest of them. They are slow, very intimate plotless stories and beautiful written. 2y
Flaneurette The series is a bit like a long winded over-sharing blog encompassing time, memory and the traumas incurred in just being alive. I can‘t seem to look away however..... 2y
Faibka @Simona I think I‘m convinced :) sounds like something I would enjoy so adding to tbr, thanks! 2y
Faibka @Flaneurette certainly seems engrossing by the little I‘ve read about it, I‘m very much intrigued now looking at everyone‘s comments so hopefully I can get to it soon. Thanks! 2y

I haven't been posting much because I'm in a reading slump and can't settle on anything. It's starting to get a little annoying. Bah. 📚🤷

SassyBookworm I‘ve been in a reading slump too 😢 2y
kalinichta @Chrysta23 It's frustrating! I hope yours passes soon. 🤞 2y
Reviewsbylola Ugh I hate that. 2y
SassyBookworm @kalinichta thank you! I hope yours passes soon too! I‘m really trying to get through the book I‘m in now, but I hate forcing my self to pick it up. Although I am fine once I do. It‘s just I seem to avoid it 😤 2y

cathysaid Nice! I've got a set as well, but I like your covers better. Have you read them all? I'm still midway through book 4. 2y
BarbaraBB @cathysaid I did. The last one is sooooo good! 2y
Booksnchill @cathysaid no I have only read Autumn, his book on Soccer and part of Book 1 but I stumbled on a set going for a good price so bought it and awaiting 6 for completion. 2y
cathysaid @BarbaraBB Ooooh I'll have to move that up on the TBR @Booksnchill Well done! 2y
sisilia 🤤I‘m drooling here... i‘m getting these next year 💪🏻 2y
Booksnchill @sisilia just in time for Vol 6 translation release next fall! 2y
sisilia @Booksnchill I saw Vol 5 when I visited Strand Bookstore. The blurb that they wrote is “Still struggling....” 😅 I‘m looking forward to the complete set; should park myself in Bali for 2 weeks to read in peace 2y
Booksnchill @sisilia I am not sure Bali for 2 weeks qualifies as a Struggle!!!🤣🙃 2y
sisilia @Booksnchill Haha 🤣 2y
jveezer #archipelagobooks has the first five in sale right now, probably in anticipation of Book 6 later this year. Trying to resist the pull of that button as I gifted myself their subscription yesterday. So I'm gonna get Book 6... 2y
Booksnchill @jveezer awesome! 2y

TFW you're being pulled toward a book, and you think, "Well, it's currently checked out at the library, but I'll read the sample to see what it's like should I be interested in borrowing it later..." Then you come to, ten bucks poorer, but one e-book richer, trying not to think of what you've gotten yourself into (there are how many volumes and they're how thick!?).

Apparently, if you start your book with a meditation on death, I'm yours.

My #TopFiveFaves:

Book Series- My Struggle by Karl Ove Knausgård
(anxiously awaiting Book 6 after his new series' first book was released in the US last month...) ?

Movie- Dirty Dancing ??
I always watch it when I'm sick and feel transported...

Color- ? (to wear) and ? (to view)

Dessert- chocolate & whiskey ???

Flower- hydrangeas because of all the color options but also ?

Post your own!

Cinfhen Love it all, well maybe not your book series but only because I haven't read it😌 2y
Cortg I had hydrangeas for the girls in my wedding! I've had a bush in every house we've owned (4 now!) 2y
BarbaraBB Hasn't book 6 yet been translated in English? I read it in Dutch: be prepared for a Grande Finale 😍 2y

mrozzz @BarbaraBB it's not out until Fall 2018 if you can believe it 😫 2y
mrozzz @Cinfhen haha it's a commitment if you decide to read any of them (they're huge) but I really enjoy the full writing style 2y
mrozzz @Cortg I'm liking hydrangeas for the tables at my own wedding!! So versatile and not too expensive. 🤗 2y
BarbaraBB Wow, you will have forgotten all about the five other parts by then 😉 2y
mrozzz @BarbaraBB I could reread them!!! 😁 2y

Pickpick

This book struck a chord with me. If you think you would enjoy long-winded and wonderfully specific tangents (almost boring, but not quite) and minute-by-minute details and thoughts from a man who is both deeply present with himself and frustratingly distant from others, as he manages the death of his father, PICK THIS UP. He covers everything, mostly death, and when my partner's father died last May, our stories were revealed to be very similar.

shawnmooney I looooooved this too. I read it more than five years ago, and finally got around to the second volume last year, which I enjoyed equally as much! 2y
Blaire This has been on my tbr for years. Need to get to it. 2y
cathysaid Midway through volume 4 and just picked up volume 5. Its hard for me to pinpoint why I like them...but they draw me in every time. 2y

mrozzz Such a good review. 2y
mauveandrosysky Great review! I thought the last third when the focus shifts to his father was so brilliant. I loved how the banality all started to make sense as a way for him to cope with death. I'll admit I did struggle with parts, but as a whole piece of work I thought it was pretty genius. When do you think you'll read book 2? 2y
Flaneurette Awesome review! I can't seem to look away either and am awaiting the last volume to be translated into English but it looks like I have to hang tight for another year 2y
BooksForEmpathy @mauveandrosysky Oooh I'll read it when you read it! I thought I read somewhere that the second book is about love and marriage and that appeals to me a lot. What do you say!? 2y
mauveandrosysky @BooksForEmpathy oh awesome! I'd love to read more about what Karl Ove has to say about those subjects. We should definitely buddy read it at some point! 2y
