So on my birthday last week I decided to spontaneously book myself a solo trip to Norway! I‘ve never travelled on my own before. I always thought it‘d kinda happen one day but the stars never made it happen, so I just booked it. I‘m so so excited. The trip is at the end of April/start of May and I‘m having so much fun planning, attempting duolingo and finding Norwegian books.

Suet624 That‘s fantastic! Good for you! 2y

This six-part novel has been on my TBR list for some time; it‘s been called one of the first great works of the 21st century. I was amazed that it sold a half-million copies in his native Norway, a country of only 5 million. I found this first volume to be a very fast read. Critics call it “auto fiction,” which is much closer to a memoir than most novels based on one‘s life. There is much controversy about it. I found that he renders(see comments)

Hamlet (Review continued #1)…beauty and meaning out of everyday events the way Melville renders philosophy from whaling-ship details or (a more apt comparison) the way Proust derives memory analysis and social critique from everyday banalities of French life. I‘m reading it with a book-club pal, and we have both captivated. It‘s his complete honesty and candor that makes the work of presenting truth as he sees and discovers it somehow sing. (Continued..) 2y
Hamlet (Review continued #2) This first volume focuses on Karl Ove‘s youth, leading to the death of his father; some English editions subtitle it “A Death in the Family.” He hates his father but can‘t shake his influence and lasting effects. Brutal honesty makes for a writer I admire but a character who shocks and who can be unsavory but still fascinating. Everything arising from his minute attention and candor is both straightforward and… (continued..) 2y
Hamlet (Review continued #3)… quite nuanced; it demands conversation after reading, I found, and the conversations I have had about the book have been rewarding. The novel may not be for everyone. I suggest you read some critics‘ reviews before you decide to add or reject it from your TBR pile. I will definitely read the other volumes. 2y

It's not that I'm not enjoying it, but I assume everyone who reads this or the later volumes has moments of disbelief that there is still so much more left...

vivastory I *really* liked this one. Especially the ending, which to this day remains one of the most powerful portraits of grief that I've read. Yet, I have yet to read further volumes... 3y
BarbaraBB I‘ve read them all and wished for more afterwards… 3y
LeahBergen I‘m like @vivastory - I really liked the first one but never read any more. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3y
See All 8 Comments
Liz_M Nice to see you and I guess we won't be seeing you for the long while it takes to read this. 😁 (I am the slacker that owns all six volumes but am too wary of the time commitment to start...) 3y
Billypar Good to know @vivastory - I can definitely see him handling emotional moments in a powerful way. I've read enough to know that this will likely be a pick, but also that I'll likely be in the one volume camp with you and @LeahBergen for a long while! 3y
Billypar @BarbaraBB @Leftcoastzen He's definitely an amazing writer. There's got to be some kind of reader continuum: 'tolerance for books lacking in plot/larger narratives.' I suspect I'm squarely in the middle, and even though this is non-fiction, I think where you are determines if you read 6 volumes or 6 pages 🙂 3y
Billypar @Liz_M It's good to be back on Litsy more regularly: I was definitely missing it and really glad that NYRB helped keep me connected at least monthly. Luckily I'm tackling this on audio so it's my dishwashing soundtrack and won't compete with Litsy time or other reading! 3y

#20Series20days #Top20Series I think I started reading these when vols.1&2 were in paperback here in the U.S.Knausgaard ruminates on everything , the extraordinary & the ordinary.Readers either fall in love with the series or don‘t see what the fuss is about. He has me early on speaking of how he will spend too much on music and books to the detriment of rent/food.As you can see , I couldn‘t wait for the last vol.to come out in paperback!

Andrew65 This isn‘t a series I have heard of. 4y
ValerieAndBooks I‘ve read books 1-4, book 5 still TBR, and was waiting for book 6 to come out in paperback — I think it has been for a while and need to get it 😊 4y

Leftcoastzen @ValerieAndBooks No spoilers but really 6 is so long , it‘s like 2 books .And he ruminated a lot about Hitler .I loved the whole series, & felt he had many great points about him , but slowed me down , because sometimes you can‘t read about Hitler. 4y
Andrew65 @Leftcoastzen Thanks, I will check it out 😊 4y
ValerieAndBooks @Leftcoastzen that‘s good to know about 6 — thanks for the heads up. 4y

My second read of this (yes I already read it once, but see I want to reread them before I tackle book six, which I have not read) had me enraptured.

Before I really liked it, but now... Wow. The sections I thought were dull before—I loved them this time! The game changer is that now I consider everything he writes in context of the scale of the whole series, and it makes the accomplishment so much more impressive. I‘m blown away really.

quote
Taylor
My Struggle: Book One | Karl Knausgaard

“Then I looked out the window. The sky above the hospital on the other side of the road was cloudless and blue. The low sun glistened on the panes, signs, railings, car hoods. The frozen breath rising from passersby on the pavement made them look as if they were on fire.”

Not sure why but I‘m really feeling this descriptive passage, as I‘m feeling this entire reread of volume one. I‘m definitely glad I‘m diving into this again....

Leftcoastzen I read them all and was mesmerized. 4y
Taylor @Leftcoastzen They‘re so good. I read 1-5 already but I want to reread them before I do number 6. 4y

Oh dear..the beginning was so good. Then my struggle to be interested in his struggle became too much to bear. I don‘t often give up on a book but this one I must, at least for now. 😀😀

SamAnne LOL. What is it about some male writers who have to take up so much time and space? 5y
Heideschrampf I think in a case like this it's perfectly normal. In depth soul searching just ain't a good beach read 5y
Theaelizabet Good try! I could just never convince myself that I could be interested in his ruminations. 5y
See All 15 Comments
Suet624 @SamAnne Haha. Some of his ideas were thought provoking and quite interesting. And then something happened. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 5y
Suet624 @Heideschrampf Funny you should mention that. I could imagine sitting in a beach chair with this book being my only option and at least I‘d finish it. I have a feeling I‘d get a lot out of it eventually. 5y
Suet624 @Theaelizabet He has teased me from the bookstore shelves for years. 😂😂 5y
MicheleinPhilly @Theaelizabet SAME. I‘ve always been like, “Why do you think I want to read 6 books about you and your life?” 5y
BarbaraBB And yet... 😉 5y
Izai.Amorim Not to mention the bad taste in choosing such a title... 5y
Suet624 @Izai.Amorim So true. 5y
kalinichta Yep, I felt the same way about this book. The beginning was so promising and then... meh... I still haven't picked it back up 5y
Suet624 @kalinichta I have a sneaky suspicion I won't be picking it up again either. 😉
5y
Leftcoastzen Generally our tastes are similar, I devoured the series, maybe the minutia of everyday life intrigued me more? But , I am bogged down by the last book.the usual reading too many books at once & a section of like things I want to tell you about history and philosophy.Hard to read about Hitler near the holidays. 5y
Suet624 I definitely hit a rough patch of minutia and had way too many other books to read. I had been enjoying it before then. I generally read one book at a time so it was slowing my roll. 😁 I might bring it with me for my week on the beach to at least finish it. 5y

I have very mixed feelings about this book. I did enjoy parts, especially towards the end. But it was a slog of detail to get there. I finished it a few weeks ago and only now just got round to taking a picture for litsy. But the further I‘ve got from it, the more negative my feelings have become. So I don‘t think I will have the resilience to continue with the series

I'm officially a Knausgaard fan! I didn't think I needed this (because who ever needs a middle-aged western man reminiscing about his life?) but this first part of a six-part memoir has been a much appreciated companion this week. I was hooked a few pages in and haven't been able to put it down! Knausgaard talks about everything in (too) much detail but oh boy, is he readable. I'll be picking up Book Two soon for sure ⚡

I‘ve been finding this a bit heavy going. Only managing a few pages at a time, and finding my attention sliding away from the page as the minute descriptions of a Stockholm street (and everything else) fail to draw me in. But yesterday I finally had a breakthrough with about 100 pages read, including staying up late to carry on reading. I had planned on reading the whole series... but we shall see if I have the willpower!

Well, that's all I need: a middle-aged chap navel-gazing/reminiscing in minute detail and expectation of an audience! ? Except that it turns out I enjoyed it. The man can write. Admittedly I far preferred the more introspective parts to the bathroom-cleaning parts, but I warmed to Knausgaard's self-consciousness (which seems to be at the heart of his "struggle"). I will read more, but not just yet. I'm curious about his Seasons books, now, too.

rachelk @ValerieAndBooks I‘d read Baldwin now, but that‘s just me - you can‘t go wrong either way! 🙂 6y
ValerieAndBooks @britt_brooke 😊 now I just need to read faster!! 6y
ValerieAndBooks @Zelma thanks! Now to really get cracking on my ever-growing TBR 😅! 6y
ValerieAndBooks @BarbaraBB it‘s a good place for me to find books off of the #1001books list 😊 6y
ValerieAndBooks @ForeverNerdy 😊 I‘m excited 😆!! 6y
Zelma @ValerieAndBooks I always look at my TBR as the pile of endless possibility. And I‘ll never run out of something great to read! 6y
LeahBergen @DivineDiana @ValerieAndBooks I liked the movie, too, bought the book after seeing it. I haven‘t seen this painting but I did see a big Klimt exhibit that was glorious. 😃 6y
Cinfhen Hey @DivineDiana do u want to try and meet up in NY to see the Klimt, you as well @ValerieAndBooks ?!?? I‘ll be in NY from Friday March 9 until midday Tuesday March 13 6y
DivineDiana @Cinfhen That would be fun! There is a new bus line out here in the Burbs that I have been wanting to try! @ValerieAndBooks 6y
DivineDiana @LeahBergen The exhibit must have been divine! I enjoyed the history of Klimt and his relationships in the book. Highly recommend. 6y
Cinfhen Like a Bolt Bus??? @DivineDiana 6y
Cinfhen I‘m gonna go online and see if we need to order tickets etc and I‘ll let you know what I discover @DivineDiana @ValerieAndBooks 6y
DivineDiana @Cinfhen Yes, like a Bolt Bus. It is OurBus and the stop is in Malvern. 6y
Cinfhen Where does it drop you off in the city?? @DivineDiana 6y
ValerieAndBooks @Cinfhen @DivineDiana I‘d love to do this, but we‘ll be in Boston that weekend for older son‘s senior concert. I‘m sure you‘ll have fun if you go 😊!! 6y
DivineDiana @Cinfhen It looks like there are 2 stops. Either the Port Authority or Madison between 26th and 27th 6y
Cinfhen That sounds like a great weekend @ValerieAndBooks sorry u won‘t be around! 6y
ValerieAndBooks @DivineDiana I‘m glad to know about this bus service going out of Malvern! More convenient than going into Philly first. @Cinfhen 6y
Suet624 That‘s fantastic! 6y
DivineDiana @Cinfhen Yes. I‘ll check my calendar and email you some dates that could work for me. Safe travels! My email is dmillerick@comcast.net 6y

My Struggle: Book One | Karl Knausgaard

#music #riotgrams I couldn‘t decide so I‘m posting both.In Karl‘s books, whenever he gets a little coin or the notion, he goes out and buys books or music,it always made me smile as I was reading, sounds familiar.😁
High Fidelity charms me as a book or as a movie, one of the rare occasions I love both.Record store owner Rob analyzed his failed relationships through the lens of his musical obsessions.”What came first, the music or the misery?”

Pickpick

I finished book one and immediately ran to the bookstore for book two. I cannot stop talking or thinking about this odd phenomenon, both the books and the author. I read a review that says, "it's like opening up someone else's diary and finding your own thoughts," "more real than reality".

Booksnchill Just got Winter in today and will start it soon! 6y
whereistexasjen @Booksnchill ooh it looks so good! 6y
Booksnchill I am 100% down with your Knausgaard love- I have georgeous editions of My Struggle I got from Book Depository! 6y

Has anyone read this? Would love to know what you think!

SusanInTiburon I have actively avoided it because if I‘m going to spend that long in someone‘s head I wouldn‘t choose him first, but my sister - who is a real reader and knows me - says he is worthwhile and unputdownable. So I‘m torn. 6y
mklong The first three are on my shelf, but I have never gotten to them. A friend in my book club is OBSESSED though 6y
vivastory I loved this one. I haven't read further volumes, but definitely plan on it 6y

Faibka @SusanInTiburon @mklong thanks for your comments. I feel very much intrigued but I‘m not sure if I can make that kind of investment unless it‘s truly worth it, so I guess I‘m torn as well. 6y
Faibka @vivastory interesting! I really like your book choices so now I‘m feeling more inclined to give it a try :) thanks 6y
Simona I have read first two so far and I will definitely read the rest of them. They are slow, very intimate plotless stories and beautiful written. 6y
Flaneurette The series is a bit like a long winded over-sharing blog encompassing time, memory and the traumas incurred in just being alive. I can‘t seem to look away however..... 6y
Faibka @Simona I think I‘m convinced :) sounds like something I would enjoy so adding to tbr, thanks! 6y
Faibka @Flaneurette certainly seems engrossing by the little I‘ve read about it, I‘m very much intrigued now looking at everyone‘s comments so hopefully I can get to it soon. Thanks! 6y
