#IdiomInsight

The term #DimeADozen came from the mid 1800s when things like eggs were often sold as a dozen for a dime. This was a favorite book & movie of mine growing up as this family tried to do everything economically & efficiently, both financially & in processes.

This week‘s episode of my book podcast brings you *exactly* the kind of conversation I most love having you on the show and I cannot wait for you to listen and share your thoughts. Jake Maia Arlow joins me to discuss CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN, the book that inspired a slew of movies and yet bears little resemblance to them. We cover everything from YouTube bros and the Duggars to dad jokes and big families. Listen at the link in my bio!

I remember loving this when we read it in 8th grade, but now it feels so foreign and antiquated to me. I'm assuming we had a bit of help when we read it, as everything pertains to life in the early 20th century but I'm not really enjoying it too much. 🤷‍♀️

Cathythoughts Oh dear. We change .. this picture makes me smile 👍😄 2y

Pickpick

This is an old favorite of mine that I hadn't revisited in several years. A memoir of sorts, two of Frank Gilbreth's 12 children tell about their childhood. Gilbreth is a fascinating man, self-educated, brilliant, boisterous, challenging. His wife, Lillian, was a PhD who didn't allow a dozen pregnancies to stop her from partnering with her husband throughout his career, and carrying on with his work when he died.

This book is mostly ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) lighthearted family shenanigans, but the work that the Gilbreths did is honestly fascinating. I'm jumping right into their sequel, Belles on Their Toes, and also found out just today that Frank, Jr. wrote another book that is more a straightforward biography of his parents that I'm definitely planning to read as soon as I can find a copy!

This book took me to New Jersey for #ReadtheUSA2020 @Andrew65 & I am also considering it my ⬇
4y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Parent/Child Memoir for #Booked2020 @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaratheBibliophage - perhaps not a memoir in the traditional sense of the word, but definitely a great deal of thought regarding the relationships between the Gilbreths and their children. 4y
Suet624 I‘ve never even come close to thinking I wanted to read this until I read your review. Stacked! 4y
See All 10 Comments
TheAromaofBooks @Suet624 - it's an entertaining story, and it's obvious that Frank & Ernestine loved their parents/family a lot. It's extra fascinating to me because of its time period - most of this book takes place before WWI. Lillian was one of the first female engineers to earn a PhD, and she & Frank basically created their area of specialty, motion studies. 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Well sure, this works for me! Great job! 👊🏻📚♥️ 4y
Butterfinger I adore that dedication. I don't know anything about this family, but I soon will. 4y
Cinfhen I love this choice xxxx 4y
Clare-Dragonfly Oh wow. I read this as a kid—probably more than once—and though I remember it being a lot of fun, I don‘t remember the parents being scientists at all. Time to revisit it, I think! 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Butterfinger - they're super fun stories, especially if you have any siblings haha 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Clare-Dragonfly - I didn't really pay much attention to that part when I was younger, either, but rereading as an adult I find myself just as interested in the work that the Gilbreths are doing as I am in the fun adventures. It's not really the purpose of the book, so they don't go into loads of details, but it's still just super interesting, especially since they were pioneers of their field. 4y

Until we get down to the Peretti books they are all pretty short, so I am actually cautiously optimistic that I can get through a lot of these this week!! My other favorite part of this book was what a time capsule it was! The kids get whooping cough, photo taking was a huge and loud production, and not only are there flappers but also "sheiks" and Joe College was somehow a thing. Most shocking to me was the discussion of women's underwear and the actual hairstyle in these photos! It was discussed as an option for women who didn't have the short flapper bob.

A friend who studies efficiency recommended this book, and the thoughts on how to efficiently run a factory or a family were my favorite parts. The dad initially seemed like an awful tyrant but I'd somewhat warmed to him & enjoyed the last chapter. As a warning, everything about race in this book, which takes place about 100 years ago, is a best cringeworthy & more often very offensive 😓😬😠😮

CogsOfEncouragement @Laura317 I have seen both movies starring Bonnie Hunt and enjoy them. I did not recognize a specific scene from the book though lol. I have not read the sequel to know if the movies took situations from that or not. The movie is "inspired" by the family but it certainly did not ruin any punchlines in this book ? 7y

As the oldest of six children, I can certainly relate to the craziness of life in the Gilbreth household. I don't think there is another book that has made me laugh out loud like this one. There are so many hilarious moments...like the time the lady from Planned Parenthood showed up...or how Mr. Gilbreth names the pet birds "Shut Up" and "You Heard Me".
