Belles on Their Toes
Belles on Their Toes | Frank B. Gilbreth, Ernestine Gilbreth Carey
6 posts | 19 read | 4 to read
Life is very different now in the rambling Gilbreth house. When the youngest was two and the oldest eighteen, Dad died and Mother bravely took over his business. Now, to keep the family together, everyone has to pitch in and pinch pennies. The resourceful clan rises to every crisis with a marvelous sense of fun -- whether it's battling chicken pox, giving the boot to an unwelcome boyfriend, or even meeting the President. And the few distasteful things they can't overcome -- like castor oil -- they swallow with good humor and good grace. Belles on Their Toes is a warm, wonderful, and entertaining sequel to Cheaper by the Dozen.

1. June was FULL of rereads of old favorites, so it's hard to pick just one!!
2. I really want to get caught up on the #HeyCarrots Anne of Green Gables series - I really thought reading one book a month would be manageable, but I haven't read May OR June! 😂 Hoping to score at least a bingo with #BookSpingBingo & maybe I should read the library books I've had checked out since the beginning of March?!?

The sequel to Cheaper By the Dozen, this memoir-ish book follows what happened to the Gilbreth family following the sudden death of their father, leaving Lillian Gilbreth with 11 children ranging in ages from 2 to 18. I love this story even more than the first, as the family does whatever it takes to make sure that they can all stay together. Lillian is a brilliant woman who partnered in her husband's work while he was alive and took over his ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) business after his death. She's an amazing example of how women can be both brilliant mothers and career women. Author, engineer, psychologist, motion study scientist, lecturer, teacher - I am truly mind-blown by everything she accomplished every time I read this book. Of course this story is just as much, or more, about the children as it is their mother, and there are loads of shenanigans as they get older and start dating. Lillian ⬇ 4y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) put ALL of her children through college, which in an of itself is pretty amazing. This is an entertaining and heartwarming sequel to Cheaper By the Dozen that I highly recommend. 4y
Butterfinger Wait a minute. Was the dedication "father only raised 12 children" and "mother who raised 12 only children" from Cheaper by the Dozen? My head is blown. 4y

Cole is helping me to exit this long weekend the way I came in: with some Gilbreth hijinks. Lillian Moller Gilbreth was a total boss, in case you were unaware. #currentlyreading #catsoflitsy #colecat

In the sequel to Cheaper by the Dozen we learn what happens to the family after the patriarch unexpectedly passes away. Their incredible mother holds the family together as she tours the country lecturing on efficiency. Meanwhile the kids get up to all sorts of hijinks. Loved it. I have so much respect for the mother and I can‘t believe she really did all of that! What an amazing woman!

MsShanOD I loved these books when I discovered them as a teenager. The movies were fun too. 5y
AvidReader25 @MsShanOD I didn‘t realize until recently that there was a sequel! 5y
MsShanOD @avidreader25 I still remember trying to work out "Who died?" in Cheaper by the Dozen. 5y

I just loved this sequel to Cheaper by the Dozen which was a real treat as well. This picks up after the loss of Mr. Gilbreth and is such an homage to Mrs. Gilbreth who carried on with her eleven children and her career in motion study. There are many humorous anecdotes from this large, loving family that are still funny today.

revenge4porgy One of my favorite books and that‘s saying a lot! 😎 6y
Ncostell @revenge4porgy I can believe that! I just love this family and reading about all of their crazy antics. 6y
