A Kestrel for a Knave | Barry Hines
post image

@BarbaraBB Here is a book local to me, although set in my parent‘s generation. Billy Casper is a young boy in a small Yorkshire town with little prospect of achieving anything in life, he like so many others will go to work in the coal mines. Billy finds love and companionship with a kestrel, he names Kes, but he soon learns that he has allowed his dreams to fly too high. #ThinkLocalGiveAway

BarbaraBB Oh wow this is one of the #1001books to read before you die list! Thanks for entering 💕 4y
veritysalter @BarbaraBB There‘s an excellent film adaptation too. 4y

The Great Indian Novel | Shashi Tharoor
post image

Congratulations on the Litsyversary, @BarbaraBB and thank you for hosting the #ThinkLocalGiveAway. I realized that I haven‘t reading anything set in Oregon which I need to rectify. However, I usually recommend the tagged fictional book set in India. It is one of my favorites as it focuses on the political history from the time that India gained independence in 1947 but the characters reimagined from the Indian epic, the Mahabharata.

BarbaraBB Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention and entering the giveaway! ❤️ 4y

Hi @BarbaraBB ! Congratulations on your 3 year Litsyversary. This is a super fun idea of a giveaway! 🥳 Thankee!

I read this book when i was 16, which i think was too young an age to understand this multifaceted, complex story. Don't remember much now, which tells me that i should re-read it. Set in Kerala in India, it's a tale of forbidden love, family, childhood bonds, hope. #thinklocalgiveaway

BarbaraBB I loved this one so much when I read it! But that was a long long time ago too! Thanks for entering, I didn‘t know you live in India! 💚 4y
Tanisha_A @BarbaraBB 💙 I have got to read more Indian novels. 😶 4y
Rissreads This is one of my top all time favourite books! I loved it!!!!! 🧡 4y

Congrats @BarbaraBB ! You always have the greatest post! I am recommending "The Good Neighbor". Mr. Roger's is an icon in western PA. And especially now, his wisdom is sorely needed.

Thank you for your giveaway opportunity @BarbaraBB and cheers to three years! 🥂

This book was written by a former admin in our school district about the time she spent as our first “diversity practitioner.” It‘s such a relevant read and I‘m thankful that she had the courage to speak out. It‘s doesn‘t get more local than this. #thinklocalgiveaway

Cinfhen Nice choice 👍🏻 4y
BarbaraBB Impressive story indeed. Thanks for entering! 4y

@BarbaraBB ! I almost forgot to enter your #ThinkLocalGiveAway!

This Canadian novel is set in Vancouver‘s Chinatown in the 1940s and tells the story of three siblings growing up as immigrants when their family is still very much a part of ‘Old China‘.

Vancouver is not my hometown (it‘s in the next province) but I‘ve spent a lot of time there (and in Chinatown, as well). This is a beautiful first novel and I highly recommend it.

BiblioLitten Those shoes😍 4y
LeahBergen @BiblioLitten Aren‘t they cool? They‘re 4-inch little handmade lotus (bound foot) shoes that I bought in Asia years ago. Most people think they‘re hideous. 😆😆 (edited) 4y
vivastory Why would you enter against me? I thought we were friends. 😜 4y

LeahBergen @vivastory Okay, I‘ll let it go. THIS time. 😂😂 4y
MsMelissa I‘ve never read this one. Those shoes! Ever since reading about foot binding in Snow Flower and the Secret Fan I inwardly cringe when I see little shoes like that 😬 4y
Reviewsbylola Those are such a cool piece of history. 4y
Leftcoastzen The tiny shoes ! I read Snow Flower & the Secret Fan . Fascinating, cringeworthy, a complicated history. 4y
KVanRead This is one my mom loves, but it‘s still on my ever growing TBR. 4y

There are too many fantastic books set in NYC, most of which you've already read (10:04). So, I am recommending a book set in the state where I grew up: Minnesota. Tim O'Brien wrote one of my favorite 1001 books (The Things They Carried) and I also enjoyed this mystery.

One of the things I am missing this summer is my vacation to visit family in the Twin Cities and the few days we'd spend at the lake.

#ThinkLocalGiveaway @BarbaraBB

JenniferP I love that area of the country. And I‘ve never read Tim O‘Brien. I‘ll try his 1001 books book first. 4y
Tamra 👋🏾 From Red Wing. 😁 4y
Liz_M @Tamra Yay! Your town makes the BEST steel-toed boots and in the early 90s the only ones that fit small/narrow women's feet! 4y

Liz_M @JenniferP If you like meta-fiction and connected short stories you'll love The Things They Carried! 4y
BarbaraBB Thanks for entering! I loved this book ages ago. More recently I read The Things they Carried but for me it couldn‘t match the memories of this one! 4y
LeahBergen I love Minnesota! My best friend was born there and I joined her on a road trip all over the state several years ago. ❤️ 4y

I had some trouble coming up with a local book @BarbaraBB!! No one ever sets books just in the middle of Ohio. 😂 But when I read Ready Player One I was delighted to find Columbus as the future hub of technology & the place everyone was dying to live!! 😁 Thanks for having the #ThinkLocalGiveaway!!!

Mitch Oh - have you listened to reading women for the last few episodes. It‘s all about books in your part of the world. 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Mitch - No, I haven't!! I'm a terrible auditory learner, so I almost never listen to... well anything besides music, really! 😂 I'll have to see if I can find a list of the books they've referenced, though! 4y
ravenlee Have you read Chris Grabenstein‘s Lemoncello series of MG books? They‘re set in middle-of-nowhere (fictional town) Ohio. 4y
See All 9 Comments
TheAromaofBooks @ravenlee - I've never even heard of them! 4y
ravenlee They‘re a lot of fun, with tons of books and authors dropped into the story as teasers and games. I really enjoy them. They‘re set in (I believe) Alexandria, Ohio, a small town where nothing much happens. I know you‘re hurting for books to read 😂 (edited) 4y
TheAromaofBooks @ravenlee - Oh dear, these definitely sound like books I'm going to have to check out! 4y
Jerdencon The lemoncello books are great! 4y
TheLudicReader Celeste Ng sets her books in Ohio. Have you read them? 4y
TheAromaofBooks @TheLudicReader - no I haven't!! After I posted this I remembered that I have also enjoyed Linda Castillo's series set in the Amish Country area of Ohio. However, Ready Player One is still the one I've found closest to my actual location, other than a super old book published in the early 1800's called Forest Rose. It's a fun tale but rather full of casual anti-Native American sentiment per the time it was written! 4y
