New bestie!!! 😁😁💕

My creative idol Stuart Turton was such an entertaining speaker - irreverent, smart, cynical, funny - and I even managed to say a few words to him.

US Littens might be pleased to know he's doing a US tour soon too 😊

I found Deborah James' book extremely inspiring.

If there is one message I will take away from reading it, it is to have rebellious hope.

What an amazing person. I only wish she could've had many more years of fulfilling and happy life.

Loved it. Locked-island, post-apocalyptic murder mystery madness.

Readable as heck. Probably full of plot holes I don't give a damn about. Twisty, turny, ambitious, and totally bananas.

I continue to be a huge Stuart Turton fan. I eat up everything he puts out and love that his books are original and different from each other.

He simply can't write fast enough for me 😊💕

julesG Bananas and plot holes fits. 🤣🤣🤣 7d

I bought a load of keys from Litjoy a while back and gave them to Mum so that I could "earn" them by doing various things.

Although technically I didn't meet the goals I set, I did make a lot of effort, so Mum agreed to let me have this one based on Professor Umbridge's room ??

Turns out I actually AM living in the moment after all 😅

Now if only I can find out which supernatural forces are screwing me over...

(I kid.)

This book is inspiring even to a seasoned curmudgeon like myself. Chapters so far have talked about the importance of Hope (REBELLIOUS hope 💕), awareness of Time, and now Purpose.

No one has all the time in the world, and you don't need it to live a worthwhile life 💙

Started this book on my lunch break.

Anyone who has tried and failed to improve their mental outlook over a period of many years will know how victim-blamey being told to think positive is, but Deborah James focuses on HOPE 💙☀️

I might try cultivating hope because unlike general positivity it focuses on the unknowns of the future. It's easier to hope for the future than to alter thinking on the past and present.

What do I dare to hope for?

NatalieR I agree. Being hopeful is much more helpful for me than “being positive.” I have found gratitude extremely helpful in moments of distress or suffering. ☮️ 2w
TheBookHippie I agree 💯. The be thankful be grateful thing grates on me. Hope is better. 2w
RaeLovesToRead @NatalieR Gratitude can be powerful, but I struggle to summon a feeling of gratitude... instead of writing down things I'm grateful for, I write down things that made me laugh, so when I look back it makes me lol 😁💕 2w

RaeLovesToRead @TheBookHippie On the other hand, in my love life, holding onto hope tends to be where I fall down hahaha 🤣🤣 2w

The Story of Art | E. H. Gombrich
post image
Pickpick

This was an incredible book, but a total sausage fest.

It gets ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for being an inspiring, colourful, accessible, engaging volume, and for giving me a grounding in art knowledge that I didn't think possible from one book.

Art is discussed from a Eurocentric position, only ONE female artist is featured and some of the language is culturally insensitive to the modern ear, but this remains an outstanding work.

Thirsty for more now!

Suet624 Glad you got so much out of this! 2w
Branwen Oooooh this sounds lovely! 💕 2w
RaeLovesToRead @Suet624 @Branwen I adored it. I feel really guilty because I'm now reading The Story of Art Without Men and I'm missing Gombrich's enthusiasm and zeal. He made me care about some truly iffy paintings!!!! Shame it was so bloke-heavy 😅 2w

"Let any man make a calculation of his existence, subtracting the hours in which he has been thoroughly happy...
Let him do this, and surely he will laugh in utter bitterness of soul when he sets down the sum of his felicity, and discovers the pitiful smallness of the amount.
He will have enjoyed himself for a week or ten days in thirty years perhaps."

They have told me this before. Most of it anyway.

This may be the basics, but it's also the FUNDAMENTALS.

This is a really good summary of self care and simple therapeutic tools to manage symptoms of anxiety, depression, stress, grief, & emotional turbulence.

Later chapters on attachment and living within ones own values also provide invaluable information.

It won't cure your problems, but I would endorse this book as a good place to start.

Small Things Like These | Claire Keegan

Pickpick

This was a good short story / novella, but possibly suffers from being overhyped.

Claire Keegan creates an emotional impression with her writing, but sometimes there's a thin line between life affirming and clichéd, between heartwarming and twee. I think she mostly succeeds.

This is a quiet and moving tale about life, morals, charity, luck, priorities and responsibilities. Time will tell whether it leaves a lasting impression on me.

This is something that can be difficult to understand for people who are naturally cheerful, because what can be the harm in positivity, right?

Sadly, it can feel very lonely and alienating if it jars with your inner experience.

It's OK to stop trying to gaslight yourself.

I recommend cat pictures, self-deprecating humour, distraction, music, videogames, tea, ranting & light exercise instead.

Whatever gets you through!

You're not alone 🫂

RaeLovesToRead @Bookwomble @ImperfectCJ Someone posted this one the other day too and it made me giggle... 1mo
kassandrik Toxic positivity is just the worst! All emotions matter if they are not leading to aggression and harm. Also, speaking out loud own worries sometimes works better if we want to reduce power of anxiety. 1mo
Cuilin @Bookwomble So toxic! I think it‘s a way of communicating “Please don‘t tell me how you really feel.” As a neurodivergent I hate it!! 1mo
RaeLovesToRead @kassandrik @Cuilin The absolute WORST affirmation is "happiness is a choice" ???? 1mo
kassandrik “Just think positively. You choose the way you think. Negativity is in your head“ That's what I dislike to hear :(
Usually, when I hear these statements, I just want to remind people about the power of emotional validation. If someone is sad or unhappy, just be there and listen. It is much more empowering than “Be happy!“ attitude
1mo
RaeLovesToRead @kassandrik Yes. And no two brains are alike. We're all sitting in very different emotional and cognitive environments to start off with. What works for one may not work for another 💙 1mo

RaeLovesToRead @The_Penniless_Author Yup, although you are the cheery recipient of maaaaany miserable, ranty emails from Yours Truly so be careful what you wish for 😉😇 1mo
Bookwomble @Cuilin Sad is a valid emotion that we ignore at our peril. As a fellow neurodivergent, I'm trying not to mask so much & to accept & learn from what my emotions are communicating. Feeling the loss of a public figure last week, I consoled myself by reading aloud, in my best theatrical voice, the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, a poem about the fleetingness of life, the inevitability of death, the likelihood of oblivion, & felt much better for it! 4w
Cuilin @Bookwomble I‘ve been married for 26 years and I‘m just beginning to unmask around my in-laws. 😮‍💨 I‘m definitely checking out that poem. May I ask what public figure? And I‘m sorry for your sadness. 🥰 4w
Bookwomble @Cuilin I've only "come out" to a few people. Those who know me best said, "No shit, Sherlock!", so I've felt supported and accepted. I hope your in-laws are understanding ? It was a singer I like, Steve Harley. I posted about him at this tag #TuesdayTunes It activated some of my personal loss, too, but I think being connected with that is beneficial in processing it. I hope you like the Rubáiyát; it's one of my favourites, especially the 1st ed. 4w

This was incredible. I was thoroughly absorbed from start to finish.

A dark exploration of what it might be like to be brought back to life as a clone, with added twists and turns. This is not really a murder mystery, nor pure sci fi, nor lit fic, but incorporates elements from each genre to create a stunning whole.

Great title, cover, & concept, but I didn't get much out of this.

I left with little idea of who the writer is as a person despite being privy to her inner thoughts. She's a bunch of contradictions & the messy feel of this book might reflect her inner chaos or it may just be poor structuring.

Sometimes empathic, sometimes mean-spirited, in turn insightful and blinkered. There's no real conclusion, just the meanderings of a soul looking inwards.

The TMI essay-memoir I didn't know I needed...

Having read 'wow, no thank you' I delved back into the Irby back catalogue. At first I thought it would be a flop (ENOUGH WITH THE RECIPES ALREADY) but it went from strength to strength.

'My mother, my daughter' made me cry in public, and some of the later essays made me laugh out loud.

Irby is the queen of oversharing and an essayist to watch.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

CatLass007 I have all four of her books on my Audible wish list. Your review bumped them up a few spots 🦔 1mo
Andrea313 I loved this one, too! If you haven't read it yet, I'll be excited to hear your thoughts on her second book, We Are Never Meeting in Real Life. I think it's her best, and especially good in audiobook form. 1mo
RaeLovesToRead @CatLass007 She's a really funny writer, but be prepared for lots of personal detail 😅😄 1mo

CatLass007 I can live with that. 1mo
RaeLovesToRead @Andrea313 I think I have it somewhere! The only one I've read so far was Wow, No Thank You and that had some great moments! If I review the next one I'll try to remember to tag you!! 1mo
Branwen I love Samantha Irby! 🥰 1mo
Branwen I think We Are Never Meeting in Real Life is her best book! It's definitely my favorite of the bunch! 1mo

Thanks for the tag @dabbe 💕

- Sitting Pretty by Rebekah Taussig - an incredible piece of writing on disability activism

- Black and British by David Olusoga - a scholarly, tightly-researched work on the history of Black people in Britain

- The Body is Not an Apology by Sonya Renee Taylor - a book about how we as a society rank bodies and how to blast this attitude with self-love

Wanna play? @The_Penniless_Author @julesG @Yuki_Onna

The Story of Art | E. H. Gombrich
post image

I'm getting a bit of a whistle-shop tour of the history of architecture with The Story of Art.

Gombrich explains things in a simplified, narrative way that makes it easy to understand. I'm hoping this will help me when I go back to the more complicated books on architecture that I was struggling to digest.

I'm looking forward to getting to the paintings though.

Apologies for my appearance 😅 I should probably start making more of an effort, haha.

Does it feature Pickles? No... sorry.

False advertising? Yes... a little.

PopSugar Reading Challenge 2024: A book with an enemies-to-lovers plot

Faebound was straight-forward, cheesy, and obvious, but I absolutely gobbled it up.

I finished the book immediately needing the next instalment, so that's got to be a huge thumbs up.

I'm gonna round up to 4 stars because it's just what I needed, but I will reserve final judgement until I've read the whole trilogy.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ruthiella I just listened to this author on the BBC4 podcast talk about the sub-genre “romantsy”. Sounds like fun! 2mo
RaeLovesToRead @Ruthiella Yeah! Like Strange the Dreamer 💕💕💕 I think I'm gonna seek out more of this sort of thing. Easy to read, lots of lust, and predictable storytelling. I do have another of her books and I'm gonna dive in soon!!! 2mo
Branwen Which cover do you like best? ❤️ 2mo
RaeLovesToRead @Branwen I read the red, but I think I like the purple... gah! So hard to choose!!! 💜❤ 2mo

Yesterday I stood on my Kindle.

Now it is just pens.

Cannot reset. Cannot use touch screen.

Just pens 😢😢

Patchshank Try holding down the power button until it shuts off. Might take awhile. Maybe let the battery die and see what happens? Do they have one of those small reset buttons that you need a paperclip for? I don't think they do, but i can't remember. 2mo
RaeLovesToRead @Patchshank I've tried that a couple of times. Nothing happens 😔 I thought there was a hole, but it looks like it's the light. 2mo
Bookwomble Perhaps the tips on WikiHow might help? https://www.wikihow.com/Reset-a-Kindle 2mo

RaeLovesToRead @Clare-Dragonfly Well I did fancy getting an Oasis.... just a shame I don't have a whole lot of money 😢 2mo

The_Book_Ninja 🪦💐With condolences. 2mo
julesG Would recommend trying the shut down and restart, what @Patchshank and @Bookwomble already recommended. You need to press down on the button for ages - 30 seconds or thereabout. If all that doesn't work, you might trade in the Kindle for a new one. Might only be £10-20 off, but that's better than nothing. Also, do you have some sort of insurance policy for household gadgets that might cover it? 2mo
Kitta Oh no! 2mo
The_Penniless_Author On the plus side, that is a kickass picture of pens. Your Kindle died a stylish death! 💀🖊 2mo

Pickpick

Just a lovely book about a woman who befriends an octopus, and the friends surrounding them.

Sweet and moving, with a real sense of place, and characters I cared about, Remarkably Bright Creatures is feel-good fiction at its finest.

I loved Marcellus so so much. He made the book shine.

#two4tuesday @TheSpineView 😊💕
Thanks for the tag @The_Penniless_Author 😁

1) Nearly 3 years ago I packed up my life in York and moved back in with my parents. 3 years?!?! What am I still doing here?

2) The tagged is one of my favourite books of all time. Apparently another adaptation has come out recently. I need to watch it because the film was cack.

Yuki_Onna Is it three years already?!?(I remember you posted about your moving back with them on here...)🫢 2mo
RaeLovesToRead @Yuki_Onna It'll be 3 years in Spring. Wow. I need to get a move on and earn some money. My beloved sofa is still in storage!!!! Only problem is I keep spending all of my money on books and vintage Polly Pockets 🤔 2mo
Yuki_Onna 🤣👏🫶 That's well spent, girl! (- Isn't it just creepy how time flies?🫢) 2mo
