As a brand new posh resort opens in an old manor house, the past rises up to crash the festivities to the ground. Part Midsommer, part Hot Fuzz, the twists keep twisting.

Told from four POVs: Francesca-the owner, Owen-her husband, Bella-a mystery guest, and Eddie-kitchen employee, the story flips between past, present, and future (in the POV of a detective) as they try to solve a disappearance without rousting the anger of the mysterious Birds.

Another read for the library‘s thriller book club. These are always so formulaic which makes each month‘s discussion very similar. This one‘s plot was similar to some of the others‘: fancy resort/people gathering years after an incident in their past/guests & employees all suspects. However, I liked the setting of this better than most and the characters‘ motivations all made sense (imagine!) so this one rates higher for me! Cinematic, creepy.

In the shadows of an ancient wood, guests gather for the opening weekend of The Manor: a beautiful new countryside retreat.

But under the burning midsummer sun, darkness stirs. Old friends and enemies circulate among the guests. And the candles have barely been lit for a solstice supper when the body is found

Another summer read. Properly unpredictable as Foley‘s books always are. A classic “locked room” mystery but the room is a fancy manor estate / luxury accommodation site. Not many likeable characters here but that‘s sort of her thing. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I read this for a book club; otherwise, I probably wouldn't have read another Foley. This was my favorite of the 3 I've read, but I still found the writing cringy at times. She has her characters explain things that shouldn't need explaining if the story is written well enough, and some elements are pretty contrived to pull everything together. Still, there are enough plot twists/reveals to keep me wanting to read more. It was entertaining.

Just flipping between an audio book, buddy read books and my just for fun book

dabbe I don't see much snow; could spring be around the corner? 💚💚💚 6mo
mcctrish @dabbe it‘s still there, I shovelled the snow away from my front steps because my fruit cellar is underneath and I didn‘t want the melting snow to run in and make everything wet. It was absolutely lovely yesterday and Friday will be 17°C. Next week it all goes to hell again with 4th winter 6mo
dragondrool Our snow finally is mostly gone. We had around 30 inches last month. While snowblowing my driveway with the first round, my knee blew out on me (torn meniscus). My family had to help with the bulk of clearing those inches. I missed a week of school. Not the best way to get extra reading time, though. 6mo

dabbe @mcctrish Holy guacamole, Batman! Hope all is well with the fruit cellar and that next week is not too snow-hellish. We're getting our last winter-weather with rain for the rest of the week; rain is absolutely precious and necessary in this desert. 6mo
dabbe @dragondrool Oh, no! Hope you can rest and heal up asap! 🩵💙🩵 6mo
mcctrish @dragondrool holy smokes that‘s awful! I hope you aren‘t in pain. Is rest all you need to do? Winter sucks 6mo
mcctrish @dabbe rain is precious, enjoy it all 6mo
dragondrool @mctrish They won't think about doing an MRI until after 6 to 8 weeks of physical therapy because insurance balks. So they send you for PT, and they make an educated guess. And you hope it is right and doesn't get worse in the meantime. I go back to ortho on April 10. Hopefully, I will then get a scan that shows soft tissue. Because there may be some ligament or tendon stuff along with the cartilage, be ir sprain, tear, or strain. 6mo
dragondrool It's stupid that you have to treat based on guesses when scans exist. My guess is the physical therapy is at least if not more expensive than the MRI. I'm doing okay. I'm walking on it now, but some days it really hurts from walking on all that concrete at school all day. I did get an xray when I first went in. The bones are fine. 6mo
dragondrool Hopefully I can avoid surgery. 6mo
dragondrool @dabbe Thanks! It's coming along. Just slow healing. Good thing I've got a very large home library for amusement during healing. That's a good problem to have. 6mo
mcctrish @dragondrool school surfaces are brutal. I know we can have waiting times for MRI‘s here - I wonder if swelling plays into it with the MRI and they want it to be reduced so they get a clearer picture ( and insurance wants lower costs too) I hope you mend quickly regardless 6mo

I didn‘t love this book but everything tied together in a way I never figured out. A posh manor opens in a small seaside town but unbeknownst to the guests the property has a sordid past. The past comes back to haunt its grand opening with murder, flames, and a cast of characters with a vendetta.

The reader gets to hear from multiple different narrators, and the chapters cover events in both the present and the past, which is something that I really liked about this novel. All the different pieces came together well throughout the story. There were a lot of characters to keep track of, but I didn‘t find that there were unnecessary characters; each had something unique to add. The Midnight Feast kept me guessing as to who the wrongdoer was.

This is a very soft pick for me. While I enjoyed watching the craziness unfold and figuring out how various characters actually knew each other, I also think the plot was sometimes hard to follow, especially as an audiobook. At the end of the day I enjoyed the story overall but didn‘t really care about any of it after I was through (if that makes sense). 🌟🌟🌟💫

10-13-24: My 36th finished book of 2024! Fabulous read. The Manor is a new destination spot created by Francesca Meadows, who as a young girl spent her summers there with her grandparents and twin brothers. Many faces from the past have joined the opening weekend unbeknownst to Francesca. Back in the mid 2000s, Francesca spent her summer evenings corrupting her friends and now some are back for revenge. There is so much to this book!

I really like this author but this one is not my favourite. I‘ve heard her described as a modern day Agatha Christie which is a good description. This one was a bit far fetched but ended neatly. A country manor mystery with occult leanings.

It is better than the one I read for book club, which I also loved, The Guest List. I‘ve read all of hers now and I think this is the best one and I need to talk about it. The twists keep coming at the end but they make sense to me. I figured a few of them out but I did gasp 3 times.

This is a somewhat confusing thriller, with 2 timelines and some seemingly supernatural elements...but it all comes together in the end. It is a riveting tale about privilege, entitlement & justice, pitting the wealthy against the locals, as the past comes back to haunt the town. In spite of a complicated plot, I really enjoyed it and found it hard to put down. I do so love to see karma in action. Thanks to Edelweiss+ for the digital ARC. 4.25/5

A swanky, snooty, woo resort has its opening weekend and things don‘t go as planned. Multiple characters provide the narrative as we move toward the end and finding out who died and how. Also, the past sneaks in and plays quite a role in the events. Not an omg fabulous read, but definitely enjoyable.

CBee Swanky, snooty, and woo 😂😂😂 1y
TrishB I read rich and privileged in that subtext! 1y
Hooked_on_books @TrishB Some of the characters are, yes, one of whom is purposefully dreadful (and all the much fun as a result), but it‘s well balanced by people without privilege/voices of those who work there. And if privilege drives you crazy, you‘ll really like the outcome. 😉 1y

This one feels like a rewrite of The Club mashed with Foley's own Guest List. It's not bad and there were two good twists, but it felt so familiar. A fancy resort celebrates its opening, but many guests have secrets. The flashback sections of the novel unfold a dark history on the resort's land. I did like the ending and was entertained, but it's not a new favorite.

I love Lucy Foley‘s books. She seems to always bring together a group of people who may, or may not, know each other. These people start to disappear one by one, and are usually found dead somewhere. This book is basically the same with a twist. Francesca, the owner of the Manor, holds a secret that one of the guests knows about and plans to bring Francesca to task (in so many words). A good read.

I started this one on the plane to go on vacation but barely picked it up again throughout due to time commitments and the lack of intrigue in the story or any of the characters. I stuck with it because I figured the good stuff was coming, and it did, all at the end. This is the kind of book that will slide you into a reading slump just because, meh. My reading spot won my attention on this one.
