The Adventures of Tom Bombadil
The Adventures of Tom Bombadil | J.R.R. Tolkien
This revised and expanded edition of Tolkiens own Hobbit-inspired poetry includes previously unpublished poems and notes, and is beautifully illustrated by Narnia artist Pauline Baynes. Here is something that no devotee of the Hobbit epic can afford to miss, while awaiting a further instalment of the history of these fascinating people a selection [of verses] offered as an interim report to those interested in Hobbit-lore, and to any others who may find amusement in this mixed bag of old confections. One of the most intriguing characters in The Lord of the Rings, the amusing and enigmatic Tom Bombadil, also appears in verses said to have been written by Hobbits and preserved in the Red Book with stories of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins and their friends. The Adventures of Tom Bombadil collects these and other poems, mainly concerned with legends and jests of the Shire at the end of the Third Age. This special edition has been expanded to include earlier versions of some of Tolkiens poems, a fragment of a prose story with Tom Bombadil, and comprehensive notes by acclaimed Tolkien scholars Christina Scull and Wayne G. Hammond.

Tom Bombadil is my favorite merry old soul with no cares and full of Whimsy. He was also the most powerful character in all of Tolkiens worlds. I feel like he would've been a natural in Wonderland.

As this isn't the first time I've read these poems, I already knew I was going to like them. The added elements in this edition are the commentaries on every poem by the editors, which usually include earlier variants of the core poems, together with a very brief outline by Tolkien of a never realised, stand-alone Tom Bombadil story. Well worth the relatively modest cover price... 👇🏻👇🏻

Bookwomble ...but I'd have happily paid more for better paper, a larger format and colour illustrations. Still, 5/5🌟 1y

So, I'm reading Tolkien's poem "The Hoard" and thinking that the metre is strongly reminiscent of something else. What else do I know that's written in an Anglo-Saxon style with a caesura, or pause, in the middle of each line? Obviously, "What is He Thinking" by The Streets from their album "A Grand Don't Come for Free"! #booksandmusic https://youtu.be/9EQBDK99ak8

Another journey into Middle-earth, in the way that Tolkien imagined hobbits would write about it in simple verse. I've read these poems many times and always find them charming. I was absolutely sure I had them in their own volume, and was surprised to find I only had them as part of a larger collection, an omission rectified by buying this Scull/Hammond edition, with their extensive commentaries on each poem. I was a little disappointed...👇🏻

Bookwomble ... that I'd inadvertently ordered the pocket- book sized edition I'd previously seen and not bought because the paper quality is not brilliant, and Baynes's beautiful illustrations suffer for it. So, I'm still on the lookout for a 'nice' edition, but this one is certainly worth having because of the editors' ever- excellent Tolkien scholarship. 🧙🏼‍♂️🧚‍♂️🧝🏻‍♂️🧝‍♀️🧜‍♀️🧟‍♀️ 1y

Catching up with #lotrchapteraday I‘m stopping with Tom Bombadil. The Similarian sounds intriguing but I just don‘t have the time right now.

This edition of Tom Bombadil was so beautiful both in English and Spanish. The pictures were also amazingly drawn. I will have to look for this edition to add to my own collection, for now though I have to return it back to the library.

And so it's over. I enjoyed it and l'm surprise. I normally have a very hard time with poetry, but l like this, l suspect because all poems are also a story.

There are funny ones and sad ones and l like all of them, especially the ones about Middle Earth.

l wasn‘t too keen on reading this, even considered not too. But l'm happy l did. It was her perfect read between LOTR and the Silmarillion.
Can't wait to start 😊

Jinjer Ditto. Not a big poetry reader but I could easily enjoy these. It was nice knowing that Sam and Bilbo and Frodo wrote some of them. 2y
JazzFeathers @Jinjer l think that was a nice touch, the introduction telling about the 'probzble' origine of the poems. 2y

The last poem of Tom Bombadil! I'm excited to start The Silmarillion tomorrow but so glad I got to take a break from the lore for a few poems.

What are some of your favorite poems from this collection? #lotrchapteraday

Jinjer Well, let's see...I liked Errantry even though it was mean...I liked the rhythm of it; Stone Troll, Oliphaunt, and both Tom poems and both Man in the Moon poems best. Oh & Perry the Winkle. What about yourself? 2y
InLibrisVeritas @Jinjer I liked Errantry's rhythm too. I think Tom's poems and Perry-The-Winkle were my favs though. I wish we had seen more of Tom and I love the idea of troll just really wanting to have dinner with people. 2y

This was fun light hearted break between the heavier works of LOTR & The Simarillion. It had lots of fun reminders of moments I loved in The Hobbit & LOTR. The songs got a little melancholy at the end, but I think that fits Middle Earth. Things there are often tinged with an air of melancholy. #lotrchapteraday

JazzFeathers That's true. That is really Middle Erath 😊 2y

#lotrchapteraday Another melancholy one. To think of seeing the last elves slip away from Middle Earth & to almost get to go only to find yourself held back by feet of clay. The idea of Middle Earth without elves breaks my heart 💔

JazzFeathers That's part of why the end of LOTR always makes me sad 2y

#lotrchapteraday Today‘s poem/song had such a feeling of melancholy to it. Why is it that the sea always seems to evoke this feeling, esp in Tolkien‘s works, & yet at the same time it also has such a pull? I guess it‘s that the sea is the greatest unknown on our planet...it‘s the greatest liminal space we have to hand, & we can never quite know how we will come out on the other side. We only know we will be changed.

JazzFeathers I agree. The sea is a power to reckon with, a deep mystery, but ut also brings the promice if something new and welcome. Thus was really such a sad poem. I think that Tolkien takes up the view of our ancesrirs, to whome the sea was where our world met and touched the world beyond 2y

Tommy thinks this is the perfect #CatsOfLitsy poem, and that all cats are fearsome beasts. He also thinks that "the fat cat on the mat" is obviously a reference to his brother, who is known for being fat and lazy. Tommy, on the other hand, is known for being clumsy and loving to snuggle. He is also known for his weird, scarred eyes, and his extreme derpiness... ?
