Nice way of weaving together all the strands of Dresden's life, with some strong foreshadowing of the final twist.

Jim Butcher has been writing The Dresden Files for almost twenty years now and has released dozens of novels, comics, and companion works to the series. Owning most of the novels makes him the author that I own the most books from.
Changes is one of the later books, but it is considered by most fans to be the best. But you should definitely read them in publishing order for the greatest effect.

"And I...
I used the Knife.
I saved a Child.
I won a War.
God forgive me"

This has got to be one of the darkest moments in the darkest book of the Dresden Files and for me (when in context) one of the darkest moments I've ever come across.

Often, far too often, the cost of victory is the soul of the person who reaches out and claims it.

This book really does change everything. I can't say too much without spoiling, but it's one of the most honest & painful books in the series. The ending makes me cry every time.

Even after the second listen, I still am not sure if this is one of my favorites books of the series or one of my least favorite. I don't really like change so that might be part of it since this pivotal book is full of change.

On a side note, I am 7 books behind my Goodreads Reading Challenge schedule but I should be able to catch up these next few weeks since I need to kick my show prepping into gear. #craftingtoaudiobooks.

"Or maybe stupid," Ebenezar countered.
I thought about it. "Not sure which is scarier."
Ebenezar blinked at me, then snorted. "Stupid, Hoss. Every time. Only so many blackhearted villains in the world, and they only get uppity on occasion. Stupid is everywhere, every day."

andreadmw !!! Oh that book. Let's just say Changes is exactly what that book is for the series. But, it is So. Damn. Good. Changes everything. I think it's my favorite of the entire series. #TBT What was I reading 5 years ago this month? (As you can tell I was a much slower reader then, book clubs, Goodreads, and Litsy have been a good influence on me! 😉 ). I was completely immersed in the Dresden Files! And right at a very shocking twist in the story and a major change for many of our favorite characters. Great series that gets even better as it goes.

hlgreenfield I started reading the Dresden files series last year. The first book didn't impress me much and I even considered not reading on, but I am so glad I kept at it. I think I'm on book 8 now and I am obsessed. Such amazing characters with believable development! Love it. I've bought up until book 11 and I think I'll be buying more soon! 3y
tricours What kind of a series is it? 3y
tricours @hlgreenfield you can answer my question above too if you'd like 😉 3y
See All 20 Comments
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @tricours it is a series about a wizard who opens a PI office. This is how it was first described to me by my friend....imagine if Harry Potter grew up and went off on his own to live in the muggle world and put in ad out for a Wizard for Hire. People think he's crazy and a phone, but the series starts out with him taking cases and solving mysteries...as the series and characters develop over the series they just get better as they go on. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa That should be "people think he is crazy and a phony" 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @hlgreenfield I had the same experience! My friend highly recommended them... I read the first few, took a long break and then decided to pick up the next and just hit that great part where I was then all in... and read all the rest that were out at that time back to back. 3y
hlgreenfield I suck at describing books, but I'll give it a try: it's urban fantasy so in the vein of Harry potter it's basically a story set in our world but with fantasy elements. At the same time it's also a kind of detective series cos in every book you get a whodunnit mystery. The main premise is that you have Harry Dresden that is a private eye with a twist - he's a wizard. Basically the books are about him solving crimes, his relationships... 3y
hlgreenfield And also the development of the world this is set it. I really recommend it both for people who love fantasy and for people who like detective fiction. The best part about the series really is the characters. Not just the main character harry Dresden who is amazing, but all the side characters that get just as much development and you just can't help but love. It's just a really well developed fantasy world and at the same time really funny! 3y
carys14 Loads of wonderful sarcasm throughout the series too! 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @hlgreenfield I agree! I love series that let all the characters grow and change over the series, the ones that stay the same bore me after awhile, and this is a good one. Have you ever tried Kate Daniels by Ilona Andrews, different series, but also excellent Urban Fantasy series where all the characters grow and change throughout. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @carys14 oh yes! I love the banter and other pop culture book character references. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Hornsby78 you are very welcome! 😉 3y
DuckOfDoom Love the Dresden Files. I thought the new one would be out in September but I mixed up the year and was sad for days that I would have to wait another 12 months 3y
tricours @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @hlgreenfield thanks for the great descriptions! 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @DuckOfDoom I agree! I really thought there would be a new Dresden this year too, or maybe even a new Aeronaut's, but sadly no! If you haven't tried his other series though, I highly recommend that one too, 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @tricours You are very welcome! I hope it helped. 3y
DuckOfDoom The Cinder Spires was awesome. had a fresh feel to it and some pretty cool characters (Rowl and Folly) 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @DuckOfDoom Yes! I completely agree! Such a very different world from Dresden, but some really great characters... loved the Rowl...and a completely different magical system too. 3y
