Read this one when I heard they were making a movie of it (which I've not seen). It was good but not great.

3.75⭐Light Pick
This is about a woman with past trauma trying to move on with her life by ignoring what happened in the past and completely reinventing herself as someone else…someone who is not very likable. We find out early on some of what happens to her with her flashbacks…and there is a dreadful sense of foreboding that there is something else. That‘s where the story gets a whole lot more interesting. It was a bit of a slog until then.

For how serious the themes of this book were it was a little boring. I expected it to be more exciting and thrilling but it just wasn‘t. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

AmyG Same here. I actually found the Netflix(?) movie better. 13mo

I enjoyed this thriller, but could be totally triggering for eating disorders, sexual abuse and gun violence. Definitely not for everyone. Looking forward to watching the movie. I think it‘s a good representation of just how complicated mental health is and how impactful peer acceptance is for teenagers.

I watched the Netflix movie first and was gifted the book. I read it and listened to it on audiobook simultaneously. It was different from the movie and a great read.

For me this is one of those times when watching the Netflix limited series is responsible for me having both read and finished this book. It‘s a tough read. It‘s not entertaining. The protagonist is not particularly likable. But it portrays well the enduring trauma to a 28 year old who is left on her own to resolve horrific events (yes plural) that happened when she was 14. Tiffini/Ani‘s mother makes me downright angry.

Just finished this one and it was a another winner for me. I felt that the way the character Ani was written is true to the attitude of a young teenage girl. The content was disturbing and graphic and I cried several times while watching the movie but I felt like this book was bravely written, timely, And relevant and enjoyed it. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Growing up, I thought faith was about believing Jesus died for us, and that if I held on to that, I'd get to meet him when I died too. But faith doesn't mean that to me anymore. Now it means someone seeing something in you that you don't, and not giving up until you see it too"

I've got this one on audio in my car and I find myself sitting in my driveway because I'm so drawn in to the story. I watched the movie and I love Mila Kunis but I found it very difficult to watch. It was so dark and disturbing and heavy I was crying ugly tears throughout. The book has been much more manageable so far.

This book gives a strong message. The author‘s note at the end suggested it should be a mandatory read for every teenager and I agree. I can‘t say I loved the protagonist, but I do respect her for handling everything she went through so well. The story kept me interested from beginning until end. I am very much looking forward to watching the movie on Netflix. I recommend this book, but be prepared. It deals with serious subject matter.

I see lots of mixed reviews on this one and I understand why. At its heart it was a decent story and I thought the writing itself was also fine. But I loathed the main character and had trouble getting past that. Lots of possible triggers in this novel. They didn‘t bother me, but might others. I am curious to see the upcoming film with Mila Kunis though.

A bit of a let down if you‘re expecting crazy twists and turns, like I was. But, if you want something a bit deeper, more of a slow burn, this is a good one to pick up.

Be warned though, there is some very graphic description of violence.

Another book that makes you realize that we just don‘t know what a person‘s true thoughts are and how horrible high school can be. Ani seems to have it all. She‘s pretty, thin, writes for a popular women‘s magazine and is engaged to wealthy Luke. To me, her mother really didn‘t live her and anything bad (and I mean BAD) that happened to her had to be her fault. Ani has created a protective shell that has to crack

Re-read. I loved it the first time round - and still enjoyed it this time. I always said it would be such a good psychological movie with the right casting and Mila seems pitch perfect. Fingers crossed.

Lots of triggers - definitely not for everyone.

5/100. 3.5/5. I decided to read this because I heard Mila Kunis is doing the movie soon and I love her, but I was weary because of so many mixed reviews. I will say this, it‘s a pick for me because of the interesting character development and I was definitely captivated, but I felt like she should have gone further and maybe even a little darker with Ani.

When I first saw this prompt, I thought I‘d have trouble filling it, because I don‘t usually read books that I don‘t think I‘ll like at least a little. But then I remembered these. Sweetbitter was just annoying to me, but the other two were just mean spirited.

MallenNC @vlwelser I thought it was boring and also pretentious. I think it suffered from hype too, because that made me think it would be better. 4y
MsMelissa The tagged book was awful! I can‘t remember disliking a main character more. 4y
MallenNC @Book_Fiend_Melissa Me either. I think the trauma that is revealed is supposed to justify her meanness but it didn‘t work for me. 4y
MsMelissa Exactly! I know she went through a lot, but I didn‘t think it justified her being such a jerk. 4y

This was not the best book but I found it very interesting. The setting of Philadelphia was very familiar and I enjoyed picturing all the places mentioned in the book. It covered a lot of familiar topics such as; eating disorders, rape, school shootings and bullying. The main character, Ani, is very unlikeable and calculating. Knoll does the mean-girl portrayal very well but I think she took on too many issues. I still found it entertaining!
