I picked this one up for #NoShameReadathon - Slasher horror pick

I‘m not a horror person, I‘m such a wimp and I‘m definitely not a slasher film person! So I was definitely hesitant. Definitely a bit gruesome at the end.

However, I really liked this book and couldn‘t put it down. It was also a super quick read.

Today‘s Prompt: ICE CREAM DAY

This isn‘t a sweet, ice cream parlor read, but a good one for thriller fans. 😊

Fifteen years ago three teens were murdered at a video store with one survivor, and today a similar incident happened at an “ice cream” store…https://tinyurl.com/4u7m22k6

3.5 stars for me.
2 brutal murders set 15 years apart. One takes place in a Blockbuster video (remember those?)the other in an ice cream shop.
My issue was that there were a ton of characters that all had the same "voice" which made it difficult to discern who was who. Although, this could just be a "me" issue. Lots of red herrings in addition to what felt like incomplete storylines that left more questions than answers.
Yet, it's a page-turner!

Not the most original crime thriller, but what it lacks in uniqueness it makes up for with fast pacing, dynamic characters, and precise prose.

If you enjoy a Who-Dun-It with twists & turns that sound inspired by true crime events, this is for you. They did my fav character dirty (SHAME ON THEM) but that‘s my only compliant. 1999 three girls & their boss are killed—leaving 1 survivor. Years later, victims/abusers/families are living trauma-informed lives & our trusty FBI agent is brought in when another group of murders occurs, suspiciously similar to the 1999 slayings. Cue mystery!

This is a light pick for me. It was entertaining enough and moved along at a fast pace, but I found myself wishing more time was spent in 1999.

FelinesAndFelonies I didn't love this one. I liked his first book better. The 8 month pregnant FBI agent was an issue for me. I'm in LE and there is no way a supervisor would ever authorize that type of work for someone who had a high-risk pregnancy especially that far along. 3mo
MicheleinPhilly @FelinesAndFelonies Yeah, I side eyed that whole part of the story. Aside from the risks involved, she wouldn‘t have anywhere near the physical dexterity he described her as having. I just kept thinking, “I bet he‘s never met a pregnant lady in real life.” 3mo

The past comes back to haunt sole-survivor of the 1999 Blockbuster massacre, Ella, now a self destructive therapist, after a disturbingly similar murder take place at a local Dairy Creamery &she is called to assist the only survivor there.

I was glad to see more of Agent Keller (and her husband) who appeared in Every Last Fear.

A page-turner for sure. All his characters are complex &interesting

One ahhhh concern / spoiler in the comments

5feet.of.fury Uhhhhh This is ALOT like Riley Sager‘s Final Girls. 3mo

Interestingly, this book has the same FBI agent Sarah Keller as Finlay‘s Every Last Fear, but the story told in this book predates the story told in Every Last Fear. I figured out the ultimate culprit fairly early on, but that didn‘t impede my enjoyment of the book at all given the different perspectives and multilayered story line. If you enjoyed Finlay‘s first book, you‘ll probably dig this on as well.

This is a slow building thriller/ suspense story that begins with a hook as the preface begins in 1999 with the brutal slayings of 4 young people working the night shift at blockbuster. The sole survivor, Ella, grows up doing her best to live with her trauma, while the case goes cold and the only suspect vanishes. Now with a fresh set of killings, same town, same MO, the question becomes is a copycat terrorizing Linden or is the killer back again?

Alex Finlay combined the true incidences of the Albuquerque, New Mexico Blockbuster massacre and the Austin, Texas I Can't Believe It's Yogurt Massacre for this Thriller. Not specifically noted but too close to home for it to be a coincidence. Great Read!

Who killed the teenage girls at Blockbuster years ago? Who killed the teenage girls at Dairy Creamery in the present? Not a particularly interesting group of detectives here, but I read to the end to see who did it.

This book was such a quick read! I literally read it in a day! I‘m definitely a fan of Alex Finlay‘s writing. When an eerily similar crime occurs several years apart, the survivor of the first crime must face her trauma and relive the experience to see if she can help in the investigation. I really enjoyed the FBI Agent in this story. The story comes to a satisfying conclusion. Definitely recommend!!

While this is better than most thrillers, it was not nearly as good as Every Last Fear. Tbh, I kept getting pulled out of the story because no FBI agent, no matter how dedicated, would chase perps while 8 months pregnant with twins! 🙄 At least she‘d call for backup. 😆

Two similar murders happen to teenagers 20 years apart. Another teen was arrested for the first but he jumped bail and hasn‘t been seen since. Are the killings coincidence or not?

MallenNC I‘m waiting for this one to get to me. Glad it was entertaining— I‘ve had some “thriller” duds lately. 5mo

Megabooks @Cinfhen at one point she got shot by an arrow. You cannot lose that much blood and not lose the babies!! At least you‘d go into labor from the shock. Wtf!! This is a gripping read which weaves a narrative from the aftermath of two brutal attacks on (mainly) young women fifteen years apart. I was almost disappointed that it turned out to be the person I thought it was at the start - everything else was so well worked out, that it seemed a bit too easy. Overall though, it was a really great read. 4🌟

My thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Head of Zeus - Aries, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

I really loved Every Last Fear. And this was one of my most anticipated books of the year. It's definitely a pick but not nearly as good as Every Last Fear, IMO. The 8 months pregnant FBI agent kind of ruined the story for me. I'm not sure why other than she felt unnecessary & out of place. It is fast paced & twisty but I didn't enjoy it as much as his previous novel. Maybe my expectations were too high? ⭐⭐⭐💫

NYE 1999, a group of teenagers working at Blockbuster and their night shift manager are savagely attacked leaving only one survivor. Fast forward 15 years and a group of teenagers working at an ice cream shop are savagely attacked leaving only one survivor. Are the murders connected? I loved this book. Oh I just adored this fast and thrilling read! Finlay‘s second book- set in 1999 and 2014, features FBI Agent Keller (though chronologically this book comes before EVERY LAST FEAR). In Linden, NJ in 1999, the night shift at the local Blockbuster is decimated- three slain with one survivor and fifteen years later, an eerily similar crime takes place at an ice cream shoppe. I guessed a few of the plot twists early on but there were still surprises!
