The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter
The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter | Carson McCullers
With the publication of her first novel, THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER, Carson McCullers, all of twenty-three, became a literary sensation. With its profound sense of moral isolation and its compassionate glimpses into its characters' inner lives, the novel is considered McCullers' finest work, an enduring masterpiece first published by Houghton Mifflin in 1940. At its center is the deaf-mute John Singer, who becomes the confidant for various types of misfits in a Georgia mill town during the 1930s. Each one yearns for escape from small town life. When Singer's mute companion goes insane, Singer moves into the Kelly house, where Mick Kelly, the book's heroine (and loosely based on McCullers), finds solace in her music. Wonderfully attuned to the spiritual isolation that underlies the human condition, and with a deft sense for racial tensions in the South, McCullers spins a haunting, unforgettable story that gives voice to the rejected, the forgotten, and the mistreated -- and, through Mick Kelly, gives voice to the quiet, intensely personal search for beauty. Richard Wright praised Carson McCullers for her ability "to rise above the pressures of her environment and embrace white and black humanity in one sweep of apprehension and tenderness." She writes "with a sweep and certainty that are overwhelming," said the NEW YORK TIMES. McCullers became an overnight literary sensation, but her novel has endured, just as timely and powerful today as when it was first published. THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER is Carson McCullers at her most compassionate, endearing best.

Beautiful writing and an interesting story looking at inhabitants of a poor area in southern states.
Whilst it was horrid in the poverty description, it was also really fascinating to read how each flicked to the deaf mute to confess and blurt out.

A heartbreaking story about “deaf-mute” John Singer, who finds himself alone in a small town without his former companion. Four characters gravitate toward Singer, confiding in him and projecting whatever they want onto his silence. This book is all about how hard it is to communicate with and know other people. It also includes some of the best descriptions of music I‘ve ever read. #modernlibrarytop100

📚 I was halfway through 2 books at the beginning of the challenge & finished 1 this week, so I‘m at 0.5/7. Not too concerned about being behind since I‘m anticipating catching up while on holiday the week after next.

I know this has already been used several times, but this was a given, as anyone who has followed my posts knows. McCullers' debut, published when she was only twenty-three years old (!!!) is a masterpiece of the human desire, & failure, to communicate & connect meaningfully. McCullers' breezy, yet self-assured, prose conveys loneliness like few others have ever managed. #OwnerOfALonelyHeart #AnglophileApril @Mdargusch @Reviewsbylola @emilyhaldi

It is nearly the end of January, and my first book of 2019 is complete.

The writing was beautiful, but I never felt personally invested in the characters and the story didn‘t seem to go anywhere. The way the author covers racial injustice, isolation of the characters, and the depiction of music is stunning. However this isn‘t a book I would choose to come back to in the future.

An odd book, reminds me of The Things They Carried format-wise. What struck me is the massive selfishness of many of the narrating characters, how they all chose to use the Deaf character of Singer as a repository for their worries or annoyances without ever listening or truly trying to engage him in conversation. This is also a very lonely book, with characters that only connect to each other‘s lives in very superficial ways.

This classic has a character with a #disability in it. John Singer is Deaf and this is all about how other characters project themselves through him. I LOATHE this book and most novels that have Deaf characters in them. They often are:
-stereotyped
-minor characters
-not fully developed
-objects of pity
-or, in attempts to try to “empower” them, have the amazing ability to lip-read every single word; usually to benefit hearing people

Flaneurette I bailed on this book years ago and always meant to get back to it but your viewpoint will certainly be in mind if I do! Thanks for the insight! 2y
2BR02B That's disappointing to see, as this book seems to garner such effusive praise. I plan to read it later this year, so I'm glad to have read your critique beforehand since ableism in literature often slips below my radar. Representation definitely matters. 2y
See All 33 Comments
2BR02B On a related note, are there any books you'd recommend based on their positive portrayal of deaf characters? Or any deaf authors writing today? 2y
saresmoore How frustrating! We really do need more #ownvoices writers with disabilities. 2y
Libby1 Yes! I want to ask @2BR02B ‘s question. I didn‘t like this book, either. I‘d had high hopes for it but felt let down. I think your analysis of it is spot on. 2y
KimHM What if that projecting is part of her point—that people behave badly? 2y
ValerieAndBooks @Flaneurette her writing is good, but...🤷🏻‍♀️. It came out when there was a lot less awareness. Another thing that really bothers me is McCullers refused to immerse herself in the deaf community while writing this, in spite of her husband‘s suggestion to do so. @2BR02B 2y
ValerieAndBooks @2BR02B @Libby1 Most Deaf authors (that I‘m aware of) mostly write non-fiction about various aspects of deaf culture. Harder to find Deaf novelists and fewer still that use Sign Language. This middle grade GN by a Deaf author (who didn‘t sign BTW) is good (edited) 2y
ValerieAndBooks @saresmoore I agree so much!! And I hope someday to be one of those #ownvoices writers 😊 @Libby1 (edited) 2y
Libby1 It‘s added to Mount TBR now, @ValerieAndBooks . 😊 Yippee for being one of these writers! 2y
saresmoore @ValerieAndBooks I mean it when I say I am happy to do ANYTHING I can to support that dream becoming reality! 2y
Suet624 I second Sara‘s comment. Let me know if you need any help! 2y
ValerieAndBooks @KimHM Good question. Maybe that was McCullers‘ intention. But John Singer isn‘t fully developed as a character and neither is his friend Antonapolous (sp?). As I recall, the other characters “talk at” Singer without really getting to know him. I‘ve read this twice, but the last time was some years ago. 2y
ValerieAndBooks @saresmoore @Suet624 Awww thanks 💖💖💖! I‘ll definitely remember that. 2y
merelybookish Thank you for posting this! I liked this book but I can completely see your point now. Are you familiar with the Magical Negro Figure? Stories that include the wise, mystical African American who saves a White person. ( Think every movie where Morgan Freeman plays God) I can see how characters with disabilities can be used similarly. 2y
ephemeralwaltz Thank you for sharing this!! I haven't read this one but do like McCullers' writing so I'll keep this in mind if I ever pick this up. As @2BR02B said, ableism also slips below my radar often and I'd really like to learn to be more aware! Thanks again 2y
Melissa_J I‘d be interested in books featuring positive portrayals of deaf characters. I‘m moderately to severely hearing impaired, getting progressively worse, and have to wear hearing aids. 2y
RadicalReader @ValerieAndBooks what‘s your favorite memoir? 1y
ValerieAndBooks @merelybookish YES! Absolutely. John Singer has been interpreted as being a Christ figure, but I‘m not aware whether that was actually intended. 1y
ValerieAndBooks @ephemeralwaltz You‘re welcome 😊! 1y
ValerieAndBooks @Melissa_J I hate to say it but deaf characters are hard to find in the first place unless it‘s YA or romance (neither of which I read much of) 🤷🏻‍♀️. Maybe I should do some research 🧐! 1y
ValerieAndBooks @RadicalReader I can‘t think of any memoirs by culturally Deaf other than “I‘ll Scream Later” by Marlee Matlin, the writing is okay but interesting life story. I like “Deaf Like Me” by Tom Spradley a father of a Deaf girl but I may be biased because I know the family— grew up with the girl! 1y
Reggie There is this zombie apocalypse novel written by Brian Keene and there is a deaf character in there. The character is a teenager and he forms a bond with a Dr. To blackmail the doctor this militia dangles the kid in front of zombies. And then he writes in what I can only call deaf voice. Where some of the consonants are missing. Even after the Dr. agrees to help they feed the kid to the zombies anyways. Tore me up, but it probably falls under 1y
Reggie pitiable characters? 1y
RadicalReader @ValerieAndBooks what a remarkable connection!! So interesting to grow up around the daughter who is deaf. Do you know any sign language? I always found that to be an interesting language to communicate in (edited) 1y
Bookzombie @Reggie Which book? I have several of his on my shelf to read. 1y
Reggie @Bookzombie This one, it is definitely not a feel good apocalypse story. I‘ve only read another one by him called The Complex and it was also pretty good. 1y
Bookzombie @Reggie I have The Rising, Ghoul and Darkness at the Edge of Town. All unread. 1y
ValerieAndBooks @RadicalReader yes, I do know sign language 😊 1y
ValerieAndBooks @Reggie yikes 😢. That‘d definitely be hard to read. I‘d be curious as to why the author chose that character to be deaf. @Bookzombie 1y

Four people, each isolated in their own way from those around them, find a confidant in deaf-mute Singer. They project upon him the understanding they need him to have, so that he is not so much a friend as "a sort of homemade God". It ought to be a depressing read (bleak things certainly occur) but it's not, probably because of the compassion with which McCullers writes her characters, seeing in them a dignity they struggle to find in themselves.

I owned this book for the longest time when I was younger, with the intent to read it one day. I never did get to it. Thankfully, it was once again brought my way. It felt like a true reflection of life. I was left wanting more for all the characters, much like they wanted for themselves.
