Golden Witchbreed | Mary Gentle
post image

I finally finished Golden Witchbreed today and it‘s most likely going to be my last #tbrbingo book of the year. I have a bunch of new library books that I‘m way more interested in! Still trying to decide what to do for next year. I have twelve physical #TBR books on my shelf but otherwise I‘d like to just read whatever I want for a bit after finishing the #modernlibrarytop100. Stay tuned to see what happens!

Ulysses | James Joyce

Here we go!

This is the number one book on the #modernlibrarytop100 list, and I‘ve finally gotten to this point over a decade after starting to read from the bottom of The List.

Only read five pages of very tiny font and already exhausted, but I‘m trying to keep an open mind.

ImperfectCJ I read this one a few years ago and was helped immensely by reading the chapter on Ulysses from Joseph Campbell's Mythic Worlds, Modern Words alongside it. My sister did fine without the Campbell, but I needed the help. :-) (Just tossing this out here in case your experience is more like mine.) 4y
BarbaraBB You‘ve read all other 99? Impressive! I am looking forward to your thoughts. I had a hard time with Ulysses 😀. I had Shwoop‘s explanations nearby! 4y
twohectobooks @ImperfectCJ thanks for the recommendation! There are a ton of annotations in this edition so we‘ll see how I handle those. 4y

twohectobooks @BarbaraBB I‘ve read 98 - I skipped Women in Love by DH Lawrence because I hated The Rainbow. There are also a few series on The List and I didn‘t complete them if I didn‘t enjoy the first book or two or three. 4y
SamAnne I have yet to tackle Joyce 4y
BarbaraBB I have to check it out. I am reading the #1001books to read before you die. Women in Love and The Rainbow are both on them as well. I haven‘t read them yet but I did like Lady Chatterley and Sons and Lovers when I read them - ages ago! (edited) 4y
twohectobooks @SamAnne I‘ve only read one story from Dubliners but I feel like that might be the place to start. Definitely don‘t start with Finnegans Wake like I did! 4y
twohectobooks @BarbaraBB honestly from reading the synopsis of Women in Love, it sounds like it‘d be better than The Rainbow. I didn‘t mind Sons and Lovers and haven‘t tried Lady Chatterley. 4y

This year‘s #tbrbingo has been going a lot better than my efforts in previous years. I‘m just over halfway done as of the halfway mark in the year.

If you look closely, you‘ll see that I skipped one of my #bookclub books. Also: I‘m only one book away from the end of the #modernlibrarytop100 ‼️

The Grapes of Wrath | John Steinbeck

Always tend to have a couple books going at a time, so I‘m starting The Grapes of Wrath to read alongside Black Powder War. This is my next #modernlibrarytop100 book. Jacques and I were cuddled up on the couch together for a bit but I started getting sleepy so I had to get up and move around. #catsoflitsy

#tbrbingo for 2020! I just started Black Powder War a little before midnight last night.

Lucy_Anywhere You've got some great books lined up for 2020! I loved The Lions of Al-Rassan and Outlander 📚 I love the idea - I'm trying to read more literature this year so I'm tempted to do something similar! 4y
twohectobooks @Lucy_Anywhere yep, this is basically all the remaining books on the #modernlibrarytop100 list, plus spaces for my book club reads, plus unread books on my shelf. I didn‘t have room for two of my unread books, alas! I find it‘s a good motivational tool. Hopefully next year I‘ll be able to get it down to a more traditional 5x5 square! 4y

The Way of All Flesh | SAMUEL BUTLER

Mehso-so

This one was a great big “meh” for me. It‘s the story of Ernest Pontifex, who emerges from a childhood of startling abuse to become a pastor and then gets imprisoned due to a misunderstanding. It‘s an attack on Victorian hypocrisy but like.. you better know your Victorian hypocrisy REALLY well to catch the attack part. I hate to say it, but I‘m not sure this is all that relevant to a modern reader. #modernlibrarytop100

Emilymdxn I find that a lot with satire or books written to attack or react to really specific things. You can admire what it was getting at so much but also just be bored by it 4y
twohectobooks @Emilymdxn so true! Satire can age pretty quickly. I think my review is a bit more negative than I actually felt about the book too. In the context of its position on the #modernlibrarytop100 list I just think it doesn‘t have a lot to say to a 20th century reader. Ah well! 4y

A few hours in to holiday reading extravaganza and I haven‘t made much progress because I needed to take a nap 😳🥱 Next up: snack, some gaming, and then back to my books.

I have to say, if not for my #modernlibrarytop100 project I would‘ve put this book down a long time ago.

1984 | George Orwell

Pickpick

1984 is a good book and a classic for a reason - it‘s packed full of interesting ideas. On the other hand, it‘s a bit frustrating. There‘s a textbook section in the middle that brings the whole thing to a crashing halt.

This was actually a reread (for my #modernlibrarytop100 challenge). I initially read it about 13 years ago, and as always with reading a book again, it was interesting to see which things stuck with me.

twohectobooks By the way, I snagged this copy from my mom and it‘s an edition that was actually published in 1984! 4y
larah17 I fully agree with you - great book but it's so bogged down by the textbook in the middle! 4y
AshleyHoss820 Yes!! I think that is why I struggled with this one! Phenomenal work, but it gets in its own way in the middle. Plus, I read this after I read the book that inspired Orwell, so that probably added to my struggle... 4y

twohectobooks @AshleyHoss820 We has been on my list for such a long time! 4y
AshleyHoss820 @twohectobooks It‘s a good read!! If you like 1984, you‘ll like We! 😊 There‘s no textbook section! 😄😂 4y
HeathHof I just finished this one today and completely agree about the text book section! The first time I tried reading it put the book down for a good year because that part was so boring and came back to it a few days ago but of course had to restart at the beginning. I put it in audio during that section and just zoned a little to get through it. 4y
