Fifty Words for Snow
Fifty Words for Snow | Nancy Campbell
26 posts | 11 read | 23 to read
Snow. In Japan it is Yuki-onna - 'a goddess'. In Icelandic, Hundslappadrfa - 'flakes as big as a dog's paw'. In Hawai'ian, snow is hau - 'mother of pearl', but also 'love'. Every language and culture has its own words for the feathery, jewel-like flakes that fall from the sky. From Iceland to Greenland, mountain top to frozen forest, school yard to park, snow is welcomed, feared, played with and prized. In this lyrical, evocative and beautiful book, Arctic traveller and award-winning writer Nancy Campbell digs deep into the meanings, etymologies and histories of fifty words for snow from across the globe. Held under her magnifying glass, each of these linguistic snow crystals offers a whole world of myth, culture and story.

I have continued to play along with #booked23 whilst understanding all the reasons why the team behind it pulled it for the year and I am proud to have finished it with this gift from a Litsy swap from @jhod last year! As ever in essays there are some you like more (Japan) than others (France) but this was a lovely little book of peace to dip in and out of through the Christmas season (it‘s also book 100‘of the year!)

jhod How apt! Congrats on your century! 4mo

I love the premise of this book. 50 snow related words, some in languages I‘ve never heard of, each with a mini essay on a wide range of topics: science, history, pop culture, social economics. But it didn‘t live up to my, admittedly high, expectations. The actual information was fascinating, but I found the writing totally flat. I expected this to be a meditative reading experience,👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼

IndoorDame and it‘s should have gotten me excited and continually sent me down new research spirals. Instead the one thing that really drew me in were Wilson Bentley‘s snowflake photographs that bracketed each chapter. So this book is moving on to its next home, and I‘m searching for Bentley‘s book. 4mo
JenniferEgnor I recommend this one. I really liked it. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/50486358 4mo

I love snow. Watching it fall, how it quiets the world outside my door, how it brightens up the bare trees, just everything about it. I do realize that my attitude is likely enhanced because it doesn‘t snow often nor does it stick around for very long. This book is part geography, part science, part history, part folklore and culture. Each entry is just a couple of pages long and is best read a few at a time. 3.5 🌟

Apologies to my team #SantaBookshELVES for being MIA the last two days. I had to go with no caffeine for two days for a lab test and sort of lost my will to live. 😂 But I‘m caffeinated now and will catch up. Sorry to the rest of Litsy for the numerous posts that will happen today.

Misty, Renee, thank you so much! After taking this photo I, of course, immediately brewed a cup of my new tea in this mug which I‘m completely in love with!!! & curled up with it & the tagged book (which also happened to arrive today). It also never ceases to amaze me how you mention you‘ve sent a specific item & then it arrives alongside a box of extras just to spread even more joy! Both of you & #LitsyLove hold such special places in my heart.

2-4-23 || I‘ve tried to lean into the season this year by reading this slowly over the past couple of months. It‘s divided into 50 short chapters and also features 50 of Bentley‘s famous snowflake photographs. There are sections on everything from Estonia‘s ice roads to the Icelandic word for “snowflakes big as a dog‘s paw“ to the Kilimanjaro glaciers. A perfect read for this winter season. ❄️

It‘s been days of this, and it‘s still just the start of what‘s supposed to be a long, wet winter. Every time I see this it looks a little less like magic and a little more like #freezing rain I don‘t want anywhere near my body when I have to go outside. I need to work on recapturing the magic. Maybe the tagged book will help with that? I‘ve heard good things. #JanuaryJazz @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

dabbe This is similar to how I feel in Phoenix every summer. Oh, it's going to be over 110 degrees again. Let's go fry some eggs on the concrete (which really does work, BTW). How fickle are the weather gods! 💨🌧️❄️☀️🌡️ 1y
IndoorDame @Eggs more power to you if you‘re somewhere warmer now! 1y
IndoorDame @dabbe no way! That works? 1y
dabbe @IndoorDame My husband once fried one on the hood of our car when it was over 115 degrees. We usually have summer stories about all the weird places people have tried to fry an egg, and concrete is usually one of them. Mind you: it needs to sit there for a wee while, but eventually, you can at least get one sunnyside up, with whatever else comes with it (dirt, gravel ... 🤣). Frozen pizza sorta works, too. 😀 (edited) 1y
IndoorDame @dabbe I never would have guessed! But I do see how the temptation to try it would be almost overwhelming 😄 1y

1. I don‘t put decorations up at home, only in my office at work, and I take the office ones down before we finish on the last day before Christmas. I don‘t like returning in the New Year to an office full of decorations!

2. If snow stayed white and fluffy, I‘d go with that, but it gets slushy and then freezes into treacherous ice.
So I‘ll go with rain….

#12booksof2022

Yes, we‘re on June. No, seasonal reading isn‘t my thing. Yes, now you mention it, this was my #firstlast book last January. And yes, I do enjoy taking my time over books.

This is a gorgeous collection of snowy essays from round the world. And we might even (not) discuss it at bookclub next month! I probably won‘t have read it again before then…

Andrew65 Sounds interesting. 1y

This book is beautiful - mini essays ranging from how to drive the ice roads in Estonia to the range of rituals used in remote regions of Alaska to determine a good fishing season. Each mini episode I could have read more and more on - she took me down many google rabbits holes ! Add to that the fabulous ice crystal images that separate the chapters it‘s a wonderful seasonal read. #auldlangspine

rockpools As well as being a fascinating book, it‘s a gorgeous object isn‘t it? So pleased you enjoyed it! I have a half-day‘s work left tomorrow, then I‘m making a start for jolabokaflod 😁 1y

Just taking this opportunity to announce that we finally got our tree decorated! It sat, naked and redolent of the forest, for over a week.

I‘m also taking this opportunity to announce my #BlameItOnLitsy purchase. This one‘s from another #AuldLangSpine list, this time by @rockpools ❄️.

What a lovely little read ❄️ fascinating little stories for each of the 50 words.
Iceland had my fave word- though I would struggle to pronounce.
No way I‘m going on that ice road in Estonia though, how scary did that sound.

I finished June‘s #BookSpin! I‘ve only been reading it for 6 months…

This is an absolutely beautiful book, but one to dip into rather than to read cover to cover. It takes (surprise!) 50 words for snow or related to snow from different languages around the world and recounts what it means, a myth, a piece of history, a tradition.. And of course each is accompanied by an archive photo of a snowflake.

Gorgeous slow reading! ❄️ ❄️ ❄️

Deblovestoread This sounds lovely. Stacked. 2y

I am DELIGHTED with the #bookspin and #doublespin choices this month!

My aim for June is to get 2 books that I‘ve had in progress forever finished. Snow was my first book of the year (eek!) and Nature wasn‘t started much later - for some reason my nonfiction reading this year has completely fallen through the floor. And I am really loving both of these - I‘m just not really reading them!

So yay for #bookspin and for finishing things!

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! 2y
LeahBergen I like that you still have your Santa bookmark in Snow. 😆 2y
rockpools @LeahBergen I‘ve been reading it for a while… 🐌 🧑‍🎄 In other news, work were tidying up last week. I received 2 Christmas cards as a result! 🤔 🎄 2y
LeahBergen 🤣🤣 2y
Centique I know what you mean - a couple of books last year I had on the go for 6 months. Non fiction and I loved them but I just kept putting them down. This year I‘ve got short stories and letters that I‘m reading in tiny bites infrequently! 2y

The title says it all. Campbell travels the world exploring how different cultures relate to snow and the cold. She examines how human culture and science have sought to explain the phenomena of snow and cold. I highly recommend this book.

This absolute beauty is my #lastfirst that will spill into the new year. As the title suggests, it‘s 50 words for snow from around the world, along with short histories, stories, myths… And alongside each one is a photo of a snowflake. It reminds me a lot of the Atlas of remote islands, only, if possible, even more beautiful!

A gorgeous, profound, informative book about snow and the mythology and cultural history of it all over the world. I learned everything from Latvian myths to Thai meteorology fun facts - it was also gorgeously illustrated.

And an absolute gift for the #wintergames2021 word search game - I think the word snow was mentioned about five times per page haha
