Cooking for Picasso
Cooking for Picasso | C A Belmond, Camille Aubray
95 posts | 34 read | 16 to read
For readers of Paula McLain, Nancy Horan, and Melanie Benjamin, this captivating novel is inspired by a little-known interlude in the artist s life. The French Riviera, spring 1936: It s off-season in the lovely seaside village of Juan-les-Pins, where seventeen-year-old Ondine cooks with her mother in the kitchen of their family-owned Cafe Paradis. A mysterious new patron who s slipped out of Paris and is traveling under a different name has made an unusual request to have his lunch served to him at the nearby villa he s secretly rented, where he wishes to remain incognito. Pablo Picasso is at a momentous crossroads in his personal and professional life and for him, art and women are always entwined. The spirited Ondine, chafing under her family s authority and nursing a broken heart, is just beginning to discover her own talents and appetites. Her encounter with Picasso will continue to affect her life for many decades onward, as the great artist and the talented young chef each pursue their own passions and destiny. New York, present day: Celine, a Hollywood makeup artist who s come home for the holidays, learns from her mother, Julie, that Grandmother Ondine once cooked for Picasso. Prompted by her mother s enigmatic stories and the hint of more family secrets yet to be uncovered, Celine carries out Julie s wishes and embarks on a voyage to the very town where Ondine and Picasso first met. In the lush, heady atmosphere of the Cote d Azur, and with the help of several eccentric fellow guests attending a rigorous cooking class at her hotel, Celine discovers truths about art, culture, cuisine, and love that enable her to embrace her own future. Featuring an array of both fictional characters and the French Riviera s most famous historical residents, set against the breathtaking scenery of the South of France, "Cooking for Picasso" is a touching, delectable, and wise story, illuminating the powers of trust, money, art, and creativity in the choices that men and women make as they seek a path toward love, success, and joie de vivre. Advance praise for "Cooking for Picasso" Intrigue, art, food, and deception are woven together in a tale of love and betrayal around the life and legacy of Picasso. Touching and true, this well-written narrative made me long for my mother s coq au vin and for the sun of Juan-les-Pins. Jacques Pepin, chef, TV personality, author Camille Aubray has created a vividly imagined tale of a young French woman s life-changing encounter with the most unconventional artist of the modern age. Intriguing and insightful, the sensory details alone will have you thinking you re reading the pages seated at a seaside cafe in the South of France. Susan Meissner, author of"Secrets of a Charmed Life" Takes the reader on a heartfelt journey to the South of France . . . In prose that is wise, atmospheric, and plain fun, Aubray expertly blends fact and fiction to create a rich and memorable tale. Michelle Gable, "New York Times "bestselling author of "A Paris Apartment" Aubray brings Picasso brilliantly to life. Her intriguing intertwined narratives are utterly spellbindingand deeply touching as rare as a page-turner with soul. Anne Fortier, "New York Times" bestselling author of "The Lost Sisterhood" and "Juliet" Awarm and spicy combination of art, family intrigue, food, and romance, set in sun-drenched Provence. Erica Bauermeister, bestselling author of "The School of Essential Ingredients" "From the Hardcover edition.""

Pickpick

Fascinating, dual timeline family saga, exploring the ways a young woman‘s acquaintance with Pablo Picasso during the summer of 1936 influences successive generations of her family for years to come. Excellent storytelling, plus I learned quite a bit about Picasso and his art. Now I want to visit a Picasso museum. And the south of France! Another excellent pick by @TheBookHippie for #SundayBuddyRead !

#JumpStart2024 #ReadAway2024

Read for #SundayBuddyRead this book had a lot of promise & their were parts I really enjoyed( (the food, French Riviera setting, glimpse into the art world & learning more about Picasso) but it just was too all over the place with plot lines, characters that were not flushed out, & I felt myself yelling in my head at the author & one of the MCs, Celine) & not enough for it to be a pick & so it gets a so-so for me.⬇️

DebinHawaii … As usual, the discussions led by & extra research of @thebookhippie were what made it fun & interesting & I learned a lot. (Although it didn‘t help me like Picasso any better—misogynistic🐷 it did help me appreciate his talent & understand him more). The author‘s second book The Godmothers tagged below is much better but I‘m not sorry we read this one even if it wasn‘t a hit. If you have read it (spoiler if you have not) I just have to say… ⬇️ (edited) 3mo
DebinHawaii #JusticeForJulie 😡🥺😢 she got a raw deal as a character! 3mo

Well, I enjoyed the mystery of the characters trying to find the missing Picasso painting but a lot of random things happened.
However, I did learn new things about Picasso.

#SUNDAYBUDDYREAD

I thank you so much for Sunday !!!

We finally made it to the end of January!!!

Librarybelle I feel like I have a little more insight on Picasso, at least! Not the worst book I‘ve read - there were parts that I liked - but glad I borrowed this one from the library. 3mo
Karisa Thank you for another fun read! Yes, worth it to think about Picasso and his art a bit more @Librarybelle I didn‘t realize he was such a 💩😂 It‘ll make me look at his art a bit differently now. The food and Ondine though 😍 Maybe the book should‘ve just been all Ondine‘s pov with a little Celine epilogue for closure… I always want to fix the books 😂 3mo
mcctrish I agree the Ondine/Picasso/food/south of France was all worth it 3mo
See All 22 Comments
IndoorDame Thank you for all the art resources! While I have mixed feelings about this one, starting the year off on a creative note was a major goal of mine! 🖼️🎨♥️ 3mo
AmyG Ha, yes….not the worst book we‘ve read. Highlight…the food. As always, thank YOU. (edited) 3mo
Read4life An author I wouldn‘t have picked up if not for this group. I‘m glad I read both books with this group! Thank you. 😊 3mo
Larkken @Karisa that would have been a more enjoyable book to me as well! 3mo
Larkken For some reason I‘m more annoyed that celine never got the pitcher back than that she had to sell the Picasso? But yes! I enjoyed getting introduced to many of the themes in this book - thanks for putting it on my radar @TheBookHippie I would not have read it otherwise! (edited) 3mo
vlwelser The food and the setting were great. The art speaks for itself with no intervention from the author. 3mo
Deblovestoread I would have picked this up based on cover and title and enjoyed the Ondine part of the story a lot. I didn‘t realize it was the same author as The Godmothers until a few days ago. Wish she would have kept Julie alive as part of the HEA. 3mo
DebinHawaii Sundays are always a treat! A so-so on this one for me although I did enjoy parts & learning more about Picasso (although I like him less now!). Thank you for all the extra research that you put in & the always amazing hosting. 😘❤️❤️❤️ 3mo
vonnie862 This month flew by so fast!!! Thanks again for hosting. Looking forward to February's read! 3mo
julieclair Despite everything, I actually enjoyed this book. I have had it on my shelf for ages… just waiting to read it with this group! You always do such an amazing job of hosting, Christine. Thank you. 💙 And now… it‘s headed to the library book sale. 😀🤣 3mo
TheBookHippie @julieclair 😅😂😂😂 3mo
TheBookHippie @Larkken RIGHT? Where is the pitcher?! 3mo
CoffeeAndABook Hi @TheBookHippie , a few days late but nevertheless - thank you for hosting this! I am so glad I finally read it, just based on cover + blurb I had intended to read it forever! The story had a solid premise but needed TONS of editing (as stated above) but it was intriguing enough and so worth it for the art aspect!!! And parts of the story were very enjoyable. It was a momentous concept to take on as a debut novel so kudos for that!! ⬇️ 3mo
CoffeeAndABook ⬆️ as to the striped pitcher @TheBookHippie @Larkken - wasn‘t it mentioned in the first chapters of the book that the EVIL twins 👿 threw it out? I kept hoping it would turn up after all but I think it was just simply in the trash 🥴😵‍💫 Have a lovely week everyone and thanks again for the fascinating research and hosting 😘💝 3mo
TheBookHippie @CoffeeAndABook ♥️🤦🏻‍♀️ I guess I thought that they were lying 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 ughh. Thanks for the reminder!!! It was a fun ride of a book! 🙃 3mo
mollyrotondo Sorry I was late for the second half of this read. I enjoyed the beginning a lot but then it dragged a bit once Celine went to France. Loved learning more about Picasso. Knowing more about his treatment of women and how that is represented in his art has made me turn on him but I was still really fascinated by it all. Thank you Christine! 3mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo it all still fascinates me but as @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick says what a douchecanoe.. 3mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I had to push through to finish because it was going back to the library. I didn't get to comment all the way through, but Picasso was a douchecanoe indeed. However, some women like that behavior, and so the men are rewarded. I didn't mind the Celine portion, I enjoyed Ondine's story, and I can't say I'm surprised by Picasso's actions. I didn't love this one, but I've finished worse. 3mo
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick RIGHT?! The women who like it 😵‍💫. 3mo

😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫👀👀👀👀
I loved Ondine.
I loved the art.
I loved the food.

I think the book needed an edit. This is her first book. Godmothers which I loved loved loved was her second.

What did you think ?

This section frustrated me I didn‘t even do rabbit holes 😂😬🤷🏻‍♀️

Librarybelle It definitely needed an edit. I felt the author could get across what she wanted to say without so many words or episodes or even these magical coincidences that seemed to come at the right moment. 3mo
CoffeeNBooks I feel like the main idea of the story, looking for a lost Picasso, still could have been accomplished (maybe even better) without the addition of so many other things. I did love Ondine and reading about the food and art. If I saw this book in the library, I would have picked it up because of the title and cover, so I'm glad we read it. I just didn't like it. 😁 3mo
TheBookHippie @CoffeeNBooks my used copy already at the used bookstore 😂👀(our bookstore here uses credit system ) I agree even without Godmothers I would have picked it up …. 3mo
See All 17 Comments
CoffeeNBooks @TheBookHippie lol! 😂🤣😂 3mo
Karisa Yes! Ondine, art, and the food saved it all. Worth a read with you all for sure! I‘m a snag it from Libby type so no cost for me either. Totally agree with @Librarybelle a good edit could‘ve polished it all up so much! Though I don‘t mind a magical coincidence once or twice in a story, this was too much all at the end. Must‘ve been on a deadline 😅 3mo
mcctrish Imo it needed an editor who loved this genre of book - I‘m sure it had an editor but it sure wasn‘t one that jammed with this genre. If I had not known about this book I would have wanted to read it while I was on my trip last summer. I usually buy my Sunday Buddy Reads so I don‘t have to worry about how long I have them, but this one I got from the library and I can‘t wait to take it back 🤣 3mo
IndoorDame Agreed. Ondine was a great character, and the art and the food were amazing! Lots of the time I found this a fun read, but it went off the rails in my opinion. I think about 75% of the subplots had the potential to be amazing all on their own if fleshed out, and the whole thing could have come together better with different (read more and better) editing. 3mo
AmyG Ahhhhhhhh, I disn‘t know this was her first book. Makes sense now. Yes, Godmothers was much better. Ondine was the best character. (edited) 3mo
Read4life Such a leap from this book to Godmothers. Better flow and the editor did their job with Godmothers. I enjoyed seeing how her writing evolved from this one to Godmothers. Thanks for such thoughtful book choices, Christine. 3mo
Larkken Yes to everyone! Loved Ondine, the food, the south of France, the rabbit holes about the art. My biggest “hole” was with Gilot, and I really enjoyed learning about her. I had no idea she was living until last year! 3mo
TheBookHippie @Larkken I put her book on our schedule for nonfiction November 2025 👀😂✔️ 3mo
Larkken @TheBookHippie ooo fun! 3mo
vlwelser Godmothers was so much better. 3mo
DebinHawaii I forgot this was her first book! It does explain a lot. I had it in my Kindle TBR from a deal before it was in the list based on the cover & description & was thinking it might be one for my virtual foodie book club but I am glad I read it with our group—infinitely more fun! It definitely did not live up to its potential but I am excited for the Gilot bio. 3mo
vonnie862 This book was all over the place. I did like the mystery of trying to find the painting but I was not too fond of the men in the book. I haven't read Godmothers, but I don't know if I should pick it up. 3mo
julieclair Yes to everything you said. Now I really want to view some real Picasso paintings somewhere. 3mo
mollyrotondo I enjoyed this book but I think the Ondine was way better than the Celine story. I think she made a wise choice in Godmothers to not switch back and forth between past and present. She focused exclusively on the family history and bookended the story with the more current ancestor. I liked Godmothers a lot more but still enjoyed the historical part of this story. 3mo

Celine and Gil
Dumbwaiter
Well there‘s the painting to save the day 😳😂🤦🏻‍♀️😊
Thank goodness they knew a buyer ..
And it all ends HEA ♥️😂🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️
And oh she can paint Celine can.. so that‘s good.

BarkingMadRead Very neat and tidy 🤣 3mo
TheBookHippie @BarkingMadRead OMG the hate reading I did 😵‍💫 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️. All ends happily ever after 🤦🏻‍♀️😅 except poor mom. 3mo
Librarybelle @TheBookHippie I love that…hate reading! And yes, of course there happened to be a buyer who will allow Celine to visit whenever as the painting travels around the world in a yacht for the time being. 3mo
See All 16 Comments
CoffeeNBooks I'm glad they figured out where the painting was... but again, too many convenient plot twists that were fairly far-fetched. 3mo
Karisa Yep, rushed ending for sure. The pacing of the whole book felt off. Leisurely paced first third with Picasso, sped up life with Luc in America, slowed down trip to France, sped up happy ending… 🤷🏻‍♀️ I didn‘t hate it though😂 The yacht part blurred into a Maria Callas book partly set on Aristotle Onassis‘ boat I just finished. Maybe reading about a real larger than life story made this all feel more possible? 😅 3mo
mcctrish #hatereading 👏🏻👏🏻 I think my problem is this book had such potential but CA took lazy, inauthentic short cuts at any opportunity- the Picasso part rang true because she couldn‘t go that far off book ( totally tired herself out with that ) 3mo
IndoorDame I don‘t know if I‘m more upset that her unlikely scheme actually panned out and she became an overnight millionaire, or that she left a priceless piece of art with a guy she barely knew to “sell for her” and that didn‘t come back to bite her in the ass. 🤯 3mo
AmyG The convenience of everything working out. 😳 I liked this book up to last section. 3mo
Read4life I agree with you @AmyG That sealed it as a so-so for me. 3mo
Larkken I think I would have been fine with it except for the mom dying really threw me into #hatereading everyone else‘s HEA. Like, what was the point of selling the painting? Was it to give Celine a nice life, despite the mini lecture about money not giving you happiness?!? 3mo
vlwelser This was all just totally ridiculous. Even for a novel about a fake relationship with Picasso. 3mo
DebinHawaii The food, scenery & art were the highlights. @IndoorDame I was yelling at her for that! 🤯🤬 3mo
vonnie862 When she left the painting with Gil, I started screaming! Luckily, he turned out to be good...too good in fact. 3mo
julieclair @IndoorDame @DebinHawaii @vonnie862 But at least it did occur to her to worry a bit about leaving the painting with Gil… 🤣🤣🤣 3mo
mollyrotondo I didn‘t care about the painting at this point lol I was only interested because I thought it would help her mom but CA decided to kill her off anyway. And did we know Celine could paint? Was the tipoff that she is good makeup? I wanted just a book about Ondine and we could have scrapped the Celine escapades. 3mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo not until the end… apparently once she knew Picasso was her grandpa… I assume the make up was leading us .. 3mo

Arthur horrid from day one 🤢🙄😡and the twins are awful
The mom dies

AmyG What was sad is that the Mom had a wonderful life until her dad was killed. All downhill from there. 3mo
BarkingMadRead Ugh those twins are the actual worst! I hate them! 3mo
Librarybelle The twins are monsters! I just cannot even imagine growing up with them. 3mo
See All 24 Comments
Karisa Felt like the bad guys in a fairytale those three. Ondine had tried to warn daughter Julie but couldn‘t. The whole Julie plot line was just so sad. 3mo
mcctrish @Karisa absolutely fairy tale vibes which could have been a whole other story in itself 3mo
Karisa @mcctrish Yes! It felt like a whole other book those parts 3mo
IndoorDame The twins even worse than I expected! If it was just about the money they wouldnt‘ve tried to keep her from the funeral, but they‘re looking to hurt her just for the sake of it. 3mo
Read4life I couldn‘t imagine growing up with the twins or ever acting half as horrible as they do. Truly evil. 3mo
Larkken @Karisa @mcctrish yes! Totally like a different book. So jarring how different Julie was handled vs the mother or the daughter, like she had absolutely no agency and that was ok bc she had a child so Celine deserves a happy ending instead? Just gah to me. 3mo
mcctrish @Read4life the whole Julie story line is extreme - she‘s a ‘bastard‘, her father dies, she‘s sexually abused, she marries an abuser and then is absused by her step children ( is this a Colleen Hoover novel?!) 3mo
Karisa @Larkken You‘re right! If we are suspending disbelief already, why not a happy ending for Julie? The step kids would have happily turned her carehome bill over to Celine. Celine could‘ve found the best nurses and care in France… why not? Julie deserved it too 3mo
Larkken @Karisa 💯😭 3mo
vlwelser I still feel really bad for Julie. And those twins are wretched. 3mo
DebinHawaii #justiceforjulie is all I have to say! 🤬 3mo
vonnie862 Just terrible. What I can't fathom is how the twins could get away with everything they did when they were not blood related with Julie. How can they legally keep her away from her actual daughter? 3mo
julieclair @vonnie862 I wondered the same thing. I don‘t think they could legally keep Celine from visiting Julie. 3mo
julieclair @Karisa @mcctrish Yes about the fairy tale vibes. Arthur and the twins were so ridiculously bad they were like caricatures of themselves. 3mo
mollyrotondo @vonnie862 I also wondered this. Did their father give them power of attorney over everything including Julie? Maybe. Julie was a total victim from day one and it didn‘t have to be that way. She had such a loving mother and father but her character always seemed to be a dud even before Luc died. Not sure why Julie couldn‘t have gone with Celine to find out about the painting. It should have been a mother/daughter adventure. 3mo
TheBookHippie @julieclair I have relatives like this -seeing it in print was like ahhhh she has or knows ppl like this too. 😵‍💫 3mo
TheBookHippie @vonnie862 they can. People do it alll the time. When I was in nursing homes I saw it A LOT. 3mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo it‘s like Julie just gave up. So sad. 3mo
mollyrotondo @TheBookHippie she did give up! And it sucks because she could have been a strong character with parents like Ondine and Luc. Not sure why Julie was the lost cause in the story. 3mo
julieclair @TheBookHippie It‘s so sad that families can be so horrible to each other. Greed and the desire to control are powerful emotions. 3mo

Madame Sylvie
WELL WOW
Celine does CPR
Honestly everything but the kitchen sink plot
WHO CARES 😅😂😵‍💫
OY

AmyG Oy, indeed. WTF was the point of the CPR on his kid???? It was ridiculous. 3mo
CoffeeNBooks I feel like author had a list of things she wanted to include (or maybe it was a dare from someone to include these random things 😆), and she had to figure out how/where to put them in the plot. Or she had other storylines in mind and forgot about them or ran out of time to include them. 🙄 3mo
Librarybelle @AmyG Other than to make Gil fall in love with Celine quickly??? It‘s a good question! 3mo
See All 28 Comments
TheBookHippie @CoffeeNBooks A DARE!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 3mo
Karisa I was listening on audiobook for this last part and must‘ve missed this. So easy to get distracted by someone asking a question or doze off with an audiobook. CPR on Martin then?! Oh my! WTH! 😅 3mo
Karisa Madame Sylvie was kinda fun. I like a good supernatural moment with room to wonder as long as they don‘t oversell it. 🔮😜 3mo
Karisa @CoffeeNBooks 🤔 That must happen sometimes. I‘d totally sneak in things to amuse myself if I was an author 😂 3mo
mcctrish @Karisa I liked Madame Sylvie too and @CoffeeNBooks I think it‘s more a case of graphing out the story and all the possibilities and not being willing to cut any ( and the editor having no spine) 3mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish I blame the editor!!! It‘s literally their job!!! 3mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa oh I would sneak in Easter eggs for sure! 3mo
IndoorDame @CoffeeNBooks a dare would be too funny 😂😂👏👏 3mo
IndoorDame @mcctrish totally the editor‘s fault! If the author can‘t self edit that‘s what they‘re there for! 3mo
Karisa @IndoorDame @TheBookHippie @mcctrish They should hire us all to group edit. We‘d manage their mischief 😂 3mo
IndoorDame Madam Sylvie was such an odd choice. Actually running around based off of visions and having them sort of pan out in a story with zero spiritual/supernatural undertones makes me question Celine and the author a tad… 3mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa agree. ♥️🎉 3mo
AmyG @Librarybelle I thought that, too…Gil would see her in a different light because of that. BUT…that wasn‘t what happened. The event seemed to be a one-off. @IndoorDame Sylvie…exactly. It was just pure laziness on the author‘s part. (edited) 3mo
Read4life Maybe we should change our group name. #mischiefmanagers @mcctrish 🤣🤣 3mo
Larkken Hmph. Well, at least I like #actionceline more than #mopeyceline 3mo
vlwelser This novel went totally off the rails. Madame Sylvie is sort of fun. But a weird narrative choice. 3mo
vonnie862 I laughed. A psychic, really?! 3mo
DebinHawaii There were so many scratch my head or really shake my heads moments. I felt like the CPR was a “How do I get these two crazy kids in love when I‘m nearing the end of the book & they barely interact?!?!” idea. & the Madam Sylvie was her answer to “Wait! How do I give her some way to find the damn painting because I‘m nearing the end of the book?!?!” Definitely in need of better editing. I am here for the group editing & mischief managing! 😉🤣 3mo
julieclair @CoffeeNBooks A dare!!! Or… I know that sometimes authors donate their time/talent to charity auctions. Maybe someone bid on her and she had to include some plot elements of their choosing. 🤣 3mo
julieclair I enjoyed Madame Sylvie - off the rails, for sure, but a fun ride nonetheless. 3mo
mollyrotondo @Read4life @Karisa @mcctrish Mischief Managers ❤️ 3mo
mollyrotondo I was so confused by the psychic introduction lol I didn‘t realize these characters were into the mystic arts. It‘s fine that she was the neighbor that found Ondine when she died but she became an integral part in the story too late in the book. And the Celine thing 🙄 her whole story was boring to me. It started off super interesting but then dragged on once she got to France. 3mo

TheBookHippie @AmyG 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 3mo
CoffeeNBooks @AmyG Agreed! 3mo
Librarybelle @AmyG @BarkingMadRead A little too unbelievable and too convenient indeed! 3mo
Karisa Yea, a stretch but still a fun ride to me. Ondine was my favorite character. So fierce and stayed true to her heart. 3mo
mcctrish I agree @AmyG either this book needed to be a tome and have everyone‘s story fleshed out or CA needed to narrow her focus and tighten the narrative #throwsideasatthewallwhatsticks 3mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 3mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa it was fun! 3mo
IndoorDame @mcctrish well said! I agree with the group. This was a fun ride overall, but I drifted in and out with buy in and this section was definitely one of the ‘get real‘ sections 3mo
Read4life So many coincidences and, yes, a fun ride. There were times where I thought ‘it looks like we‘re heading … but that is too unbelievable.‘ And then we‘d go there. 3mo
Larkken @Karisa Ondine was def my fav too 💕 3mo
Larkken @Read4life @AmyG I think there were a couple jump the shark moments for sure. The recurrence of Picasso coming into the narrative was too strange! Tighten it up so the book makes more sense and you need less coincidences, CA! 3mo
vlwelser I actually didn't mind that she reconciled with this dude. It was a convenient way to explain how she ended up with the mas. But totally unbelievable except in a novel. 3mo
AmyG @vlwelser Agreed. But you can only use so many convenient plot instances before it becomes unbelievable. (edited) 3mo
vonnie862 Unbelievable but I'm glad she got her hands on the painting. 3mo
DebinHawaii I agree with the group. It was too many coincidences (so some eye rolls) but I did like Ondine making the deal with the baker so she would be a partner. I agree @Karisa she was my favorite by far. Julie was just a blip, not drawn nearly enough & Celine drove me a bit nuts with her decisions. 3mo
julieclair I really liked Ondine and her gutsy moves. Yes, too many coincidences, but for some reason that didn‘t bother me with this book (although it often does with other books). 3mo
mollyrotondo I liked Ondine‘s story so much more than Celine‘s that I didn‘t mind the stretches CA went to in order to start wrapping up her story. I was very convenient that Ondine was able to reconcile things with the baker but it worked and allowed things to fall into place. I didn‘t think it was totally necessary to have Ondine steal the painting and then go back again years later to get the signature. That was too long winded of a conflict. 3mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo IT WAS SOOOO MUCH! 😵‍💫 3mo

Céline in present day learns her grandmother cooked for Picasso in the 30‘s and so we then follow her grandmother, Ondine, in her time to unravel the mystery in present day. It‘s set outside of Nice, where I was last summer and that was delightful, there‘s lots of amazing food and talk of Picasso and art, there is some over the top trauma/drama that I think was really unnecessary to move the plot forward I‘m glad I got it from the library

I‘ve read similar historical fiction books featuring artists and their inspirations, but this one just fell flat for me. I appreciated the second half more than the first half - I felt that parts of the storytelling were not needed, or could have been shortened. It was just a so-so read for me. #SundayBuddyRead #BookChain2024 #NewBookHasMorePagesThanLastBook

Hooked_on_books I‘m sometimes reluctant to read fiction featuring famous historical figures. I think some authors do a great job with this concept but others really miss, which I find a bit cringey. 3mo
Librarybelle @Hooked_on_books Some authors are not great bringing out historical figures…I completely agree! In this one, the author really brought out Picasso‘s womanizing. Her writing style, on the other hand, just did not really do anything for me. 3mo

Agree with what others have said….that you have to suspend belief a bit with this book. Kind of a shame as I like the premise but too many coincidences to me is just lazy writing.

Since we have not discussed the last section yet,I will be circumspect in what I write.Suffice to say that while I had to suspend belief at times, & there was some parts added that were unnecessary, overall this tale was easy to get lost in.France,French cooking, the European art world, mystery, intrigue, romance-the book has it all.Two timelines,1936+ & 2014-16ish make this a dramatic 3 generational family saga. #sundaybuddyread #historicalfiction

kspenmoll I gave it a pick because this novel sent me on very tangents related to the book. The “A Conversation with Camille Aubray” enhanced my reading as she talked about how she came about to write this book. 3mo

This is the story of three generations of women, beginning with Céline's grandmother Ondine who cooked for Picasso one summer when he was staying in the French village where Ondine's parents owned a restaurant.

There were parts of this story that I liked, and parts of it that I didn't. Some of it was very far-fetched, some of it felt very rushed, and some of it felt like unnecessary additions to the story.

A line attributed to Picasso “I only like to be around winners, not losers” in chapter 30 reminded me of another man I despise so took me out of the story momentarily. There were parts of this book I really liked especially the past part of the dual timeline but overall a so-so pick for me. #SundayBuddyRead I look forward to everyone‘s final thoughts next Sunday.

Rabbit hole extravaganza this week 😂♥️😅😘

I thank you all for Sundays!! What a treat it is!!

It‘s stilllll snowing I‘m off to make coffee!!
I hope your week has been good!

AmyG I am happy to finish this today! My lost suitcase has returned and I get to finish with my original copy…very excited. I am really enjoying this book. You should pick something connected to Picasso for 2025. 3mo
IndoorDame I‘d be down for Picasso or Françoise Gilot, but I like the idea of art in 2025. Maybe art nonfiction if you find something compelling in that vein… 3mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame @AmyG I love nonfiction November reading Franciose book and then maybe an art book another 😂🙃 shake us up a bit! We shall see what I find ♥️🙃 3mo

Now we get to finish…. Any guess how this ties up??

vlwelser I like Celine more but the story itself seems to be losing steam. 3mo
IndoorDame @vlwelser I think my favorite Celine is action hero Celine. When she‘s getting arrested, or rushing to clandestine meetings on yachts 😆 3mo
See All 12 Comments
AmyG I think action Celine finds the painting and helps out Gil buy the mas. 3mo
CoffeeAndABook Looking forward to the last stretch of the book! Things obviously turned around for Ondine and she gets back on her feet. But I have no idea how the Celine story line will continue. She‘ll somehow be able to help her mom out and get back at her awful siblings, of that I‘m pretty sure. Ok, at least I hope so 🙂 3mo
vonnie862 Can't wait to finish! 3mo
mcctrish I think #actionceline finds the painting and invests in the Mas, Gil gets to use Ondine‘s recipes and there‘s probably some kissing 3mo
Librarybelle My guess: Celine and Gil get together. She tells him her family story. It somehow connects them. Maybe she finds the painting??? 3mo
kspenmoll I am thinking like @Librarybelle that she finds the painting & she & Gill get together. I think her Aunt sees that relationship happening or at least thinks they are a good match & hopes for it 3mo
CoffeeNBooks @AmyG That's my guess, too! 3mo
DebinHawaii I agree that she does ultimately find the painting & helps Gil. It will be interesting to see how it unfolds & ties to the yacht scene at the beginning of the book. 3mo

So she returns to Picasso ..Ondine
So… will he help?

vlwelser I sort of don't like this painting. 3mo
vlwelser Oh. Picasso. Helping. I think yes. Otherwise how does she end up with the cafe and farmhouse? Unless she marries that other ogre. 3mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser there are plenty Picasso I like this isn‘t one 😂😂😂😂 (edited) 3mo
See All 16 Comments
TheBookHippie @vlwelser 😵‍💫 I assume yes. He helps. Hopefully she does not marry the other… 3mo
IndoorDame @vlwelser @TheBookHippie there is something uninviting about this painting that I can‘t put my finger on 3mo
AmyG I am guessing he helps….but we‘ll see. Keeps us wanting to read on. 3mo
CoffeeAndABook I don‘t have the highest hopes for him helping 😬 there are no DNA tests to help her prove he‘s the dad and he doesn‘t seem that interested even in the kids he knows are his. And he certainly won‘t act out of charity. But obviously she‘ll get help somehow and meeting Picasso might put this in motion … somehow 🤷🏼‍♀️ what a cliffhanger you picked with us stopping at the end of chapter 29 👍🏼 can‘t wait to see what happens! 3mo
TheBookHippie @CoffeeAndABook I just seperate chapters by math divide in four go to the closest number that‘s a chapter. We all find out together 😂 over the years this has proved fun or serendipitous multiple times! 3mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame it feels icky. 3mo
vonnie862 I think so. I mean, she ends up with the cafe. I'm just not looking forward to the meeting. 3mo
mcctrish My thoughts are he likes to eat. The farm is big, they can live there and cook and clean 3mo
Librarybelle I think he will help. It seems like he‘s the last hope, and we know she does get her parents‘ cafe again. 3mo
kspenmoll I hope he will succumb to her food again & help her. I don‘t trust him. 3mo
BarkingMadRead I would like to think he will help, but he‘s such a selfish guy 3mo
DebinHawaii I think he will help, at least a little. He‘s already been remembering/thinking about her & once she starts cooking… I doubt he will care much about Julie though. 3mo
mollyrotondo It‘s either he helps or someone he‘s hanging out with will step in to help. I am not looking forward to hearing more from him lol 3mo

vlwelser Well he did spread his seed around quite a lot. And it makes an extra Picasso baby more credible to add them all into the story. 3mo

vlwelser He's so snarky. He probably did things like that with the nazi officers irl. They famously did not know what to do with modern art. 3mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I‘m sure he did!!! 3mo
IndoorDame @vlwelser seems wrong that this scene with the Nazi officers is one of the funniest in the book, but it was comedy gold! 3mo
See All 14 Comments
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame he was so arrogant I‘m sure he was like this. 😂😵‍💫😅 3mo
AmyG I am sure he was like this, too. @TheBookHippie 3mo
CoffeeAndABook He really did shine in that scene with the Nazi officers. For once his total irreverence and arrogance was completely spot-on!! it was really fascinating to read about that period of time (the Nazi occupation of Paris) from the POV of a non-Jewish person. I‘ve heard more about how dangerous it was for Jewish people or Résistance fighters and this is a different experience. It‘s astonishing he could get away with this kind of behavior. 3mo
CoffeeAndABook The YouTube link you provided was so interesting!! 3mo
mcctrish Then there is a scene like this, Picasso and the Nazis, and it rings so true so I love Picasso again and Aubrey too. There is a museum in Vienna https://kunsthallewien.at/en/ that Hitler built to house his stolen treasure which is now used to show only contemporary art. I think of the Kunst often while reading this. It has got a lot of boundary pushing art in it 🫣😳😆 3mo
Librarybelle This scene is perfect! I‘m struggling with so much in this book, but that this was such a good scene. 3mo
kspenmoll This scene felt so true to Picasso‘s life that I understood before reading this book. 3mo
DebinHawaii Thanks for the links! I got caught in the rabbit hole. The Picasso with the Nazis scene was great & I start to admire his insouciance. Of course then we had to read about him meeting the next victim of his misogyny & abuse of women & then I remember how much I dislike him as a person… 😬 3mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I know!!!!!! 3mo
Bluebird Thanks for all the links! 3mo
mollyrotondo Picasso was the perfect person to push back against the Nazis like we see in this scene. I still don‘t like him but I respect him for not appeasing the Nazis and talking back and continuing to make “controversial” art. 3mo

Poor Julie no wonder 😭
Sorry had no clue we‘d need a trigger warning I didn‘t see that coming.
May explain why she was the way she was… poor soul.

vlwelser Poor girl. I hope she gets sorted. I'm hopeful for this Picasso meeting. But he can be a dickhead so 🤷. 3mo
CoffeeAndABook So awful! I was pretty shocked at how that got thrown in but never really understood or talked through. Ugh I do NOT have high hopes for anything good coming from Picasso 🫣 the fact that he happened to be in the area and Ondine was able to access him so easily was a bit far fetched… (edited) 3mo
TheBookHippie @CoffeeAndABook I believe he was in real life and the author had to get Ondine back to him. 3mo
See All 24 Comments
IndoorDame Especially heartbreaking that Ondine learned what‘s going on with Julie and just had to leave her there! I was so devastated for both of them! No wonder she stays broken and ends up with someone abusive. 3mo
CoffeeAndABook @TheBookHippie that is true! And I would have gone to him as well, she didn‘t have a lot of options. I love how much she is willing to fight for herself and her daughter. 3mo
AmyG The Julie part was heartbreaking. They seemed to have such a lovely life i. new Rochelle. I agree, it explains a bit about her. I see Picasso as a dick, too, so like @vlwelser I hope it all works out. 3mo
mcctrish This part really bugged me for obvious reasons but more for the over the top story exploitation factor. It‘s enough that luc died and Julie was ripped from the only life she knew, going ‘home‘ was a wash out with extended family dead and stupid Reneud AND her mom collapses ill - so she could lose both parents and she‘s in a foreign country. That‘s enough enough trauma - we don‘t need predatory sexual abuse too. Pick a fucking lane Aubrey 3mo
vonnie862 @mcctrish I was thinking the same thing. Why this? 3mo
Librarybelle I‘m with you there, @mcctrish ! While the trauma Julie faces does explain her submissive behavior in the modern day timeline, I‘m not sure why the sexual trauma Julie lives through was added to the storyline. What was the value??? 3mo
mcctrish @Librarybelle I think all of that disruption and grief at a pivotal age would be enough to make someone unwilling to rock the boat at a later age. Julie was always quiet and women can be ‘pleasers‘ without abuse 3mo
kspenmoll I had same thoughts as @mcctrish couldn‘t she just be her shy quiet self? 3mo
CoffeeNBooks @mcctrish I agree! It seemed an unnecessary addition to the story. 3mo
Deblovestoread Agree @mcctrish There was enough trauma to make your point. Aubrey went one step to far. 3mo
BarkingMadRead Poor Julie! This was such a shock but it explains so much! 3mo
DebinHawaii @mcctrish I agree completely. I thought this was a cheap move on the author‘s part & not at all necessary. 3mo
DebinHawaii So I am a little confused & didn‘t want to go back & reread. Did he give her the painting before or is this going to be when she gets it? 😳🤔 3mo
mcctrish @DebinHawaii as far as I know, Ondine does not have the painting yet in her story which makes Céline‘s search for it awkward 3mo
DebinHawaii @mcctrish I think I was having a brain blip! 😆 3mo
mcctrish @DebinHawaii well it‘s kind of hard to track when the story lines don‘t match up, yet. 3mo
Bluebird How can so many awful things happen to Ondine and Julie? Total soap opera. 3mo
TheBookHippie @Bluebird I get it but whew that was a LOT. But then ppl say that about my life 😵‍💫🤷🏻‍♀️. 3mo
mollyrotondo I actually thought the abuse Julie experiences as a teenager made her life with her husband make so much for sense. Especially if she never got any help for dealing with that abuse. Even though it can seem dramatic to have so much happen to the characters sometimes life does hit people so hard which can then contribute to decisions made later in life like Julie marrying such a controlling man. 3mo

mollyrotondo @DebinHawaii I did too! I thought this was her dabbling in mob stories 😆 again I would have liked this to be fleshed out more. Especially Julie. We don‘t learn about who she was growing up here and then ending up in a terrible foster care cycle as a teenager. We know she is mousy but we don‘t get a huge sense of her character. And the train! Buh bye!
Yay!
I‘m so glad she had a suitcase packed skimmed money and was leaving.

Did NOT see any of that coming! Well maybe the baby part 😂😅😵‍💫🤷🏻‍♀️

vlwelser I did not think Luc would appear or that they would take off to NY. 3mo
CoffeeAndABook Wow so many turns of events! Luc showing up and having a great plan already in place, totally ready to take on Ondine plus baby was wonderful and I like him a lot. The way they shook off the awful Renard at the train station was great and so satisfying. But reading it felt rushed, I didn‘t feel a lot of connection to the story. 3mo
IndoorDame I was so surprised both that she was prepared to take off, I wasn‘t sure Ondine was that self determined, and that Luc popped up, I wasn‘t even sure he was still alive. But super satisfying on both counts. 3mo
See All 16 Comments
AmyG I figured she would get pregnant. I wonder if Celine ever learns that. Yes @vlwelser Luc was a big surprise! 3mo
mcctrish Luc and Celine have the healthiest relationship in the book and thank goodness for this surprise 3mo
vonnie862 I saw the baby coming but not Luc. I am happy he came her and took her with him despite carrying another man's child. 3mo
CoffeeNBooks Very far-fetched that Luc happened to show up just as Ondine was leaving, but it's been a wonderful storyline to follow. It might have made more sense if somehow they'd been secretly in contact and had made a plan. 3mo
Librarybelle The baby was not a surprise to me - knew that would happen! But, the whole Luc showing up on the exact night she was running away…way too convenient. Ondine does deserve some happiness, but I almost rolled my eyes at that plot twist! 3mo
kspenmoll I too thought the baby would happen. I thought Luc must be daed so his reappearance at just the right time was a wonderful storyline.although I agree with @CoffeeNBooks @your idea of secret contact is a good one. Wasn‘t the her Mom hiding the letters between them? (edited) 3mo
Karisa @CoffeeAndABook Yes! That‘s just what I was going to say. It was like in fast forward: Hurray! It‘s Luc. What? USA? No other kids with great love Luc? Aw, still troubles. What? Back to France?! 3mo
Deblovestoread The baby was not a surprise but Luc sure was. I agree with @Librarybelle his showing up at just the right moment was a bit too convenient. 3mo
DebinHawaii Yes to most all of this. I knew she had to be pregnant but Luc was a (much too convenient timing) surprise. 3mo
BarkingMadRead I loved this! I did not see the thing with Luc coming at all, I gasped out loud! Peace out, horrible parents! 3mo
Bluebird Luc had amazing timing. Lol. Loved that Ondine at first thought he was a tramp and was trying to avoid him. Not surprised she was pregnant but happily surprised she got to be with her true love. 3mo

Celine

Think the mom was trying to get the pic back by taking the cooking class??
Why did she tell her daughter nothing?

Celine finds …. Wallpaper
Celine & Aunt Matilda and Peter at the museum see the pitcher…

It‘s in the dovecote!! That‘s my guess

CoffeeAndABook The dovecote definitely has some significance 🤨 why there was wallpaper hidden in that spot remains a mystery. (edited) 3mo
CoffeeAndABook …. That picture is great! I would put that up in my home, love the colors 🎨 (edited) 3mo
vlwelser Who hides wallpaper? So odd. 3mo
See All 18 Comments
IndoorDame I do think her mom was trying to get the picture back. Coming from a family where secrets are also the norm my guess is it never occurred to mom to share something she‘d kept to herself all these years 3mo
AmyG Ha, if Mom told Celine where the painting was there wouldn‘t be much of a story. Who knows why people do what they do? I just hope she is able to find it. I wonder if her finding it, selling it and becoming very rich….does she give Gil $6 million and become part owner??? That was stuck in my head. 3mo
mcctrish My thoughts on the wallpaper was it was leftovers saved and stuck somewhere just in case and @CoffeeAndABook I‘m with you, painting is in the dovecote #keepinglooking and @IndoorDame this is such a family with secrets and trauma 🤫🤫🤫 3mo
vonnie862 I think it may be in there too. Why focus on the wallpaper if it's not important? 3mo
CoffeeNBooks The part about the hidden wallpaper didn't make any sense to me and I had to reread it to make sure I'd read it correctly. 3mo
TheBookHippie @CoffeeNBooks unless the siblings new and stole it 😵‍💫 or the cook dude 😅😵‍💫👀 3mo
Librarybelle We‘ve heard too much about the dovecote, so something has to be there. As others have said, there are so many secrets in this family…lots of trauma, so maybe they felt like they could not divulge everything??? 3mo
kspenmoll Thinking it must be in the dovecote too, like everyone else. 3mo
Karisa There doesn‘t seem to be anywhere else to look except the convent. Gil the chef would‘ve sold it in a heart beat! 😂 3mo
DebinHawaii I am leaning to the dovecote too. It did seem like the mother & even Ondine were very forthcoming about anything—lots of family secrets & trauma for sure. 3mo
BarkingMadRead I‘m thinking it‘s in the dovecote! 3mo
Bluebird Another for the dovecote. Lol. I think there‘s some hidden significance to the wallpaper in the hidey-hole. Maybe there‘s a clue in it. Celine didn‘t look too close… 3mo
TheBookHippie @Bluebird I wondered that too! 3mo
mollyrotondo I‘m very behind after going on vacation 🙈 but I also suspect it‘s in the dovecot. Celine‘s secrecy annoys me more than Ondine or Julie‘s secrets. Just tell your aunt. I know she eventually does but she still acts cagey with her aunt each time she learns something. I liked the museum part where the aunt keeps reminding everyone what an ass Picasso was to the women in his life. 3mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo Celine irritates me to no end. Picasso was an ass to women 🤦🏻‍♀️😵‍💫 3mo

On we read! I thank you so much for SUNDAYS!
Highlight of my week. In other news it is still snowing here…. Ppl have always said I look like Françoise Gilot bottom pics ?? I enjoyed my Picasso art book & recipe hunting this week. I hope you‘re enjoying the read!

Librarybelle It‘s a so-so read for me. There really parts I‘m riveted with, and then other parts that seem to be extra long. But, I‘m invested, so I‘m sticking with it! There are too many mysteries to figure out!! 3mo
kspenmoll I am enjoying both story lines. I love that people have told you look like that bottom row! 3mo
Larkken I like your still-life in the center tile! This book is on my list for the coming week-we'll see if I get to it as I am intrigued! Catching up on Sunday Buddy Read is always a good time. 3mo

TheBookHippie @Larkken my pic of what I do snowed in for the week 📸🥶❄️🥶❄️🥶 3mo
vlwelser Picasso is such an interesting character. Even his ego is next level. 3mo
CoffeeNBooks @Librarybelle Likewise! I haven't quite decided how I feel about the book yet, but I'm sticking with it for now because I enjoy these Sunday discussions. 3mo
mcctrish @Librarybelle I‘m with you a bit. Camille has great story ideas but sometimes her writing is ‘chonky‘ and it just ends my reading vibe. I am loving revisiting the Côte D‘Azur 3mo
DebinHawaii It‘s not my favorite book so far but it has me intrigued & the food descriptions are excellent. And I love our Sunday discussions too-such a great way to start the day! 🤗 3mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I love us …and the art and food so I‘m okay too! 3mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser Fascinates me to no end!!! 3mo
IndoorDame What a fabulous person to get compared to! Much cooler than any starlet. Not my usual reading style, but I‘m happy to be starting the year off with Picasso and French food. 3mo
AmyG Thank you! I am visiting my grandson ao apologies as I am doing this in the car. 3mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG 🙃💙 3mo
mollyrotondo I am really enjoying this book so far. I like the story and it‘s so interesting to get a better idea as to how misogynistic Picasso was. I love the food talk lol and I love this group! Thank you for all the recipes and the articles @TheBookHippie you always make these reads even more fulfilling with all the additional information! 3mo

Celine and Aunt Matilda arrive to cooking class
Celine is a hot mess
Everybody finding a potential man 😂😅🤷🏻‍♀️
Have to admit I am not in it for Celine…
So she‘s where the painting might be…

I should care about her story yes? 😂

Phew

🖼️Chicago Picasso by me and its pic in my art book

Librarybelle Oddly, I like the contemporary story a bit more than the historic story. I‘m not sure why… 3mo
CoffeeNBooks I'm only curious about Celine right now because I'm hoping she can put all of the pieces of the puzzle together and find the missing picasso painting. 3mo
kspenmoll @CoffeeNBooks I hope she finds the painting too. So far I like both timelines. 3mo
See All 16 Comments
TheBookHippie @CoffeeNBooks oh I hope she finds it!!!! 3mo
Deblovestoread I‘m liking the Ondine part of the story a bit more than the Celine part. Not sure running off to Europe leaving her mom to the wicked stepchildren was the right move. 3mo
mcctrish Celine hopefully gets more of a backbone. She‘s keeping weird secrets from people who aren‘t her step siblings/ half siblings/evil siblings. 3mo
vlwelser I don't think I like Celine. I would like to. 3mo
DebinHawaii Celine is harder to get to know than Ondine. Hot mess is a good way to describe her. I am interested to see what she finds out although she seems to be a pretty bad “detective” so far. (Nancy Drew would have it figured out already!) 😉😆 3mo
IndoorDame @vlwelser @TheBookHippie totally agree! Trying to keep an open mind, but so far I‘d cut the contemporary sections 3mo
BarkingMadRead Celine is definitely harder to get to know than Ondine, I feel like she is too reserved, but maybe that‘s because of the way the twins treated her as a kid 3mo
Karisa I‘m enjoying both of the time periods though it did take a moment for me to get unto the modern one. I‘m eager to see who her mom‘s father is and to see if Ondine can help her mother 3mo
AmyG I think there is much to find out about Celine. Makes me keep wanting to read. 3mo
vonnie862 I'm only interested in Celine's story because I'm curious to see if she'll find the painting. 3mo
mollyrotondo I was really into Celine‘s story at the beginning. All the family dynamics and her mom sneakily hinting at something. I was enjoying both timelines very much. But this section made me not care about Celine‘s story as much lol I sort of stopped investing myself in her story in this section. But am all in on Ondine‘s story. But I‘m sure as Celine learns more I‘ll be intrigued again by her story. This author seems to write a better historical story 3mo

Arranged marriage …yuk

The letters. Such a massive betrayal. So horrific.
I‘ll never understand the cruelty.
Thoughts ?

So Ondine 😅😮‍💨
You got Picasso
Or, he got you
Thoughts ?

Chateau Grimaldi
Beach cabana 👀
And then, he was gone….

Desperation survival make one do desperate things or ???? 😅

Librarybelle I wanted to weep so much for Ondine. I was so angry with her parents…to hide the letters and not say anything. In a sense, Ondine had to rebel, she had to break free. If that meant climbing into Picasso‘s bed, well, everyone rebels in their own way. I knew it would not last, and I think Ondine knew too deep down - she just didn‘t want to fully recognize it was temporary. 3mo
kspenmoll @Librarybelle I feel the same way- her parent‘s betrayal, then Picasso‘s sudden desertion- devastating. Yes, she needed to rebel to give her a chance to break free(from that horrid man she was to marry.) 3mo
CoffeeNBooks How awful for poor Ondine- what a betrayal by her parents that they kept the letters from her! And they were able to keep Ondine's letters from getting to Luc, too?! 3mo
See All 26 Comments
CoffeeNBooks And another betrayal by her parents to expect her to marry someone for their benefit. 3mo
TheBookHippie @CoffeeNBooks yes both ways- vicious… 3mo
TheBookHippie @CoffeeNBooks she‘s chattel. Ugh. 3mo
Deblovestoread Another betrayal with letters! I‘m furious with her parents and hope Ondine finds a way to happiness in spite of their horrendous treatment of her. 3mo
mcctrish I had to laugh at her father, he wants the restaurant to succeed so he‘s marrying her off to the baker ( very astute of Ondine again to note how a man treats his mother is how he will treat you!) but if she doesn‘t comply then he‘ll send her back to the nunnery/convent. Hs he thought this through?! She doesn‘t cost him that much and her Picasso lunch thing proves she could be a separate source of income 3mo
mcctrish Poor Luc thinking Ondine doesn‘t love him anymore! And her bloody father not allowing her letters to go !!!! I hope he has a fatal heart attack sooner than later 3mo
vlwelser I felt so bad for Ondine through all of this. The men in this book are looking pretty gross imo. But also not sure where Ondine's mum fits into all of this manipulative nonsense. 3mo
DebinHawaii @vlwelser I agree! So far the men are pretty awful. 🤬 3mo
IndoorDame No wonder she ended up in Picasso‘s bed. Girls routinely rebel against far less upsetting betrays with far less enticing men. But I can‘t believe she thinks it‘ll be easier to get out of the engagement later than to say no now!!!! 🤯 3mo
BarkingMadRead Ugh I was so angry when she found those letters! And to be so trapped, and not retaliate until it‘s too late!! Her parents are horrible! 3mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame my thoughts exactly! 3mo
TheBookHippie @BarkingMadRead I was literally yelling!!! Ughhhhhhh. 3mo
Karisa @IndoorDame Yes! I thought she‘d make a run for it once they told her she was to marry the baker. Then, when she stayed again after finding the letters, I was doubly baffled. So odd! Why didn‘t she go to start a real life and try to find Luc? Ondine is so independent, it feels like she‘d to out of there. 3mo
AmyG It‘s a hard leason when you find your parents are not who they seem. Hers were horrible. And I think she gets pregnant, thanks to Picasso. (edited) 3mo
vonnie862 Poor girl. I would be devastated too if my parents betrayed me that way. 3mo
mollyrotondo Uhh this made me so angry! How dare her parents hide Luc‘s letters and not prevent Ondine‘s letters from being mailed. And Luc seems ill (maybe died?) and you still don‘t allow ondine‘s letters to be sent to him? A dying man? Uhh so disgusting. And all so you can marry her off to the baker because it will help your business? Uhh it‘s so awful and such a massive betrayal. I was surprised too @Karisa that she didn‘t just leave. 3mo
mollyrotondo I was also surprised Picasso just disappears only halfway through the book 😂 I wonder if he‘ll be back in this story. 3mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo I assume he returns???? 3mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo the letter thing is so cruel.. 3mo
Karisa @mollyrotondo Exactly! It feels inexcusable of her parents. Why give the young couple hope if they were always planning on marrying her off to the baker? Just cruel 3mo
mollyrotondo @TheBookHippie he must return, right? He‘s so integral to the story lol 3mo
mollyrotondo @Karisa they should have just told ondine how it was going to be so she could either give a proper goodbye to Luc or runaway with Luc. That‘s probably what they were afraid of though. That‘s why she should just walk out now. To not tell her Luc was sick. You‘d rather her think she was betrayed by him. It‘s all awful. 3mo
Larkken @AmyG yes, I‘m also thinking Picasso will “return” in the form of a pregnancy… too much foreshadowing with Celine relating peoples faces to triangles. 3mo

Ondine food training and knowledge at the convent school. Wow.

Lots of cooking school lessons in this book.
I learned from my grandma and a mentor you?

Also convent school 😵‍💫😂

Librarybelle More baking from my mom than cooking. Ondine knows so much! 3mo
kspenmoll From my Mom, but I did take a wonderful vegetarian cooking class when I lived in Boston. Still using them! 3mo
Deblovestoread What few good cooking skills I have I got from my grandmother. I should have paid more attention! 3mo
See All 16 Comments
mcctrish My mom showed me how to bake but mainly I just figured it out. I like good food so I figured out how to make it 🤣 3mo
vlwelser My mum just set us free in the kitchen with some cook books. I think most of cooking is either math or a science experiment. 3mo
DebinHawaii I learned some from my mom—more baking than cooking, which I am not a fan of. Otherwise I am mostly self-taught from books & cooking shows & when I moved to Hawaii & for several years I took a lot of Saturday morning cooking classes through the community college here—all different cuisines & and lots of vegan cooking courses. I learned a lot! 3mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii baking I do but it‘s not a love like cooking is! 3mo
IndoorDame I learned a lot from all the women who raised me. My mom included. But mostly from being told to get in the kitchen and make dinner at a pretty young age. 3mo
IndoorDame Her convent mentor‘s lessons sound a lot like Ayurvedic cooking theory… 3mo
Karisa That was an interesting part with Ondine explaining her convent cooking training. It was nice how passionate she was about it and how Picasso listened. I feel like that‘s how he pulled her in—by being the one to recognize her talent and actually listen to her (at least sometimes he listened deeply). 3mo
AmyG I learned nothing about cooking, sadly. And I don‘t have most of my grandma‘s recipes. Only her kugel recipe. 3mo
vonnie862 I learned from my mom (started cooking at the age of 5) and when I worked as a cook at Disneyland. Lately, I've been reading cookbooks and watching YouTube to add to my cooking and baking. 3mo
TheBookHippie @vonnie862 how fun to cook at Disney 😂 it was it? 3mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame YES!!! It does . I found that so interesting. 3mo
mollyrotondo @vonnie862 wow! You cooked at Disneyland? Where? 3mo
mollyrotondo I really love all the cooking tips and tricks this book offers. It sounds totally obvious but I never really thought about how you should be eating watery foods like soups in the summer to replenish water and eat dry meals like meat roasts in the winter. Also use certain things to help make meals easier to digest like beet sugar. Love all of that info. I don‘t cook. I know how to bake certain things though from helping mom at Christmas lol 3mo

Ondine ….

To the beach to retreat from the two mistresses fighting 😵‍💫🏖️☀️🌊🐚🧜🏼‍♀️

So, Picasso 😵‍💫 knows what women want 🤦🏻‍♀️🤢🤮😡🙄

If you have to fight for a man the battle is already lost ~ Ondine

So WOW WOW WOW…. Thoughts ?

Librarybelle Picasso = yuck! I guess some women just are happy to have the attention of an artist. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3mo
kspenmoll Picasso had hideous views of women- just objects for him to paint & seduce. In his element with 2 women fighting him. Odine was inexperienced & naive & he took advantage of her. I realize she made a choice but she was so young. Repulsive man. 😡🤬 3mo
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll so so young… 3mo

TheBookHippie @Librarybelle 🖼️🤷🏻‍♀️ 3mo
Deblovestoread All of the above! Men taking advantage of young vulnerable girls 😡🤬🤮 3mo
mcctrish The best part of this was Ondine‘s quote. While reading chapter 9 I wished we were doing a live reading “even the pain he inflicts on a woman gives her great pleasure and makes her happy..” umm Ondine, get the fuck out of there 3mo
TheBookHippie @Deblovestoread 🤮🤮🤮🤬🤬🤬 3mo
vlwelser I love that quote. I wrote it down. It's so true imo. But Picasso is just like whatever let's go to the beach. 3mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I did too!!! 3mo
DebinHawaii Highlighted Ondine‘s quote in my Kindle. Picasso—I just can‘t even! 🤬🤢🤮 3mo
IndoorDame As selfish and callous as he acts with Dora Maar, she at least seems like she knows what she‘s getting into and can hold her own with him. But picking a young, vulnerable, naive village girl like Ondine 🤬🤮 3mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame I so agree! 3mo
BarkingMadRead I don‘t see the attraction 🤣 get someone who appreciates you, ladies! 3mo
Karisa I agree with the others above… bonkers! That whole sequence was like what?! It feels honest to the time and person of Picasso though. So much power and fame, he feels like he‘s just above it all. Enjoys the attention. The women just let him 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3mo
TheBookHippie @BarkingMadRead It‘s a bit 🤯😱😳 3mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa It reads true, but still ALLLL those women, what ?!?! 😳🤯 3mo
AmyG Picasso had predator vibes. 3mo
Karisa @TheBookHippie Cut to me: googling “Picasso‘s lovers” 🤓😂 3mo
Karisa @TheBookHippie Cut to me: googling “Picasso‘s lovers” 🤓😂 One source says it‘s in the hundreds. “There are only two types of women – goddesses and doormats.” – Pablo Picasso https://www.artdex.com/story-picassos-women/ 3mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa my daughter who graduated with two majors and two minors all in art (Art/Art History & Ceramics/Fine Art) says he was a free loving hippie love the one your with type, she says he‘s better than Pollock, who was an all out asshat … 😅😳😂 3mo
Karisa @TheBookHippie 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣🤣🤣 3mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa 😂😵‍💫😅 going to the art museums with her is a riot… I had to get paper out for the Manet Exhibit… so many “she slept with him who slept with her who slept with her then him.. and he slept with everyone”😳🤯😱 3mo
Karisa @TheBookHippie Oh my! Sounds like a university course just begging to be taught! 😂 3mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa I tell her that all the time 😅 3mo
vonnie862 I don't see the attraction either but young girls are easy to impress. I would have been turned off if I saw two women fighting over a man and he didn't care much. 3mo
mollyrotondo I hate this whole thing. These two women fighting over Picasso are so immature because don‘t you see that‘s he‘s the person to be mad at not one another? Why do you want to be with a man who doesn‘t respect you let alone sleeps with every woman he sees? Ondine is very young and naive but still to be swept up by a guy who says what he says about women taking pleasure from pain a man inflicts on her is so confusing to me. Forget this guy. 3mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo I will never understand this… 🤷🏻‍♀️ women fighting over a man, 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ 3mo
mollyrotondo @TheBookHippie it‘s self destructive 🫨 3mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Ugh. He may be talented, but he isn't a prize to fight for. And it all makes Ondine more intrigued to be a part of his world. Why did her parents think it was a good idea to send their young daughter to cook for a grown man in his house alone? 3mo

Librarybelle Yay for heat! As for undergarments, thanks for the links and photos! 3mo
IndoorDame I‘m all for rebelling against piety 😆 though those blue satin culottes from the 30s actually look pretty comfy! 3mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame I know!!! I‘m like hmmm this looks better 😂. 3mo
mcctrish Wearing these under a dress doesn‘t sound awful. Also I‘m so glad you got to sleep with heat 3mo
Deblovestoread Yay for good cozy sleep! I remember wearing culottes. They were wide short pants to look like a skirt. I did not know them as undergarments. 3mo
TheBookHippie @Deblovestoread I wore them as well! 3mo
vlwelser We had something called culottes also. Like shorts that looked like a skirt or something. Or they looked like a skirt from the front maybe. We also had something we called spanx that you wore under sports skirts (before there was a company called that). You know, in case you needed to do a backflip or whatnot in the school hallway. 3mo
DebinHawaii I‘m so glad you were able to get some nice warm sleep! @Deblovestoread @TheBookHippie Yes, I remember when culottes as external “bottoms” were popular & wore them as well. 🫣 I agree that the blue silky ones shown look pretty comfy. 3mo
IndoorDame @vlwelser oh, I remember both of those! 3mo
AmyG I don‘t like wearing dresses. Culottes were always a good compromise for me. 3mo
mollyrotondo I definitely support the rebellion against piety for sure lol I‘d wear the flowy looking pair to sleep in 😂 3mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick They look comfy, but wouldn't they bunch up under clothes? But I guess some men wear regular boxer shorts and there's not much bunching. I remember wearing culottes that were essentially wide leg short pants, hitting right below the knee, and definitely meant to be worn outside. They were cute & served their purpose. These days, I'd likely just teach for the dress or long, thin, wide leg pants. 3mo

Bailedbailed

#SundayBuddyRead Last week I read first eight chapters and was aggravated by so much misogyny, and not just from Picasso but from every male character. It was oppressive. When I started chapter nine this morning, I decided I‘d had enough.
