Anne of Green Gables
Anne of Green Gables | L. Montgomery
The Cuthberts are in for a shock. They are expecting an orphan boy to help with the work at Green Gables ? but a skinny red-haired girl turns up instead. Highly spirited Anne Shirley charms her way into the Cuthberts' affection with her vivid imagination and constant chatter, and soon it's impossible to imagine life without her. A favourite classic with cover and introduction by the inimitable Lauren Child, award-winning creator of Clarice Bean and the hugely popular Charlie and Lola series.

Rereading this slowly this month has done wonders to make me happy. I‘ve been thinking about making an effort to devote more of my reading time to reading old favorites, so as a start I‘ll indulge my desire to continue on with this series.

Mrs. Rachel Lynde lived just where the Avonlea main road dipped down into a little hollow, fringed with alders and ladies‘ ears, and traversed by a brook that had its source away back in the woods of the old Cuthbert place; it was reputed to be an intricate, headlong brook in it‘s earlier course through these woods, with dark secrets of pool and cascade; but by the time it reached Lynde‘s hollow it was a quiet, well-conducted little stream,

IndoorDame for not even a brook could run past Mrs. Rachel Lynde‘s window without due regard for decency and decorum; it was probably conscious that Mrs. Rachael was sitting at her window, keeping a sharp eye on everything that passed from brooks and children up, and that if she noticed anything odd or out of place she would never rest until she had ferreted it out the whys and wherefores thereof. #FirstLineFridays @ShyBookOwl 2mo

While searching for a book in my home library to complete the #booked2022 prompt for #setinacanadianprovince, I was giving up hope, until I realized that this book would work! The story of Anne warmed my heart and soothed my soul. I read this as a young girl after my mother gave it to me for Christmas. Reading it again,I realized that she must have chosen it, not only for the wonderful story, but also because of the character, DIana. #kindredspirit

2022 edit - What is there really to add? It's a book that retains its magic read after read. 5 stars

>>>
Brother and sister, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, decide to adopt a boy to help on the farm. The message gets muddled and they end up with a daydreaming, intelligent red-headed whirlwind named Anne. 5🌟

I also love the TV adaptation with Megan Follows as Anne - I may even admit to a girlhood crush on Gilbert Blythe.

Sparklemn I love that description of Anne. 🙂 9mo

For this reread, I listened to an audio version. The CBC mini-series from the mid-80s with Megan Follows is one of my all-time favourite movies. Because of that, I was unable to picture anything else but the characters in that movie. But that‘s ok by me. The book had a few additional happenings that they didn‘t put in the movie and the movie expanded on some of the happenings in the book. I don‘t know how anyone could not help but love Anne.

I found this fascinating—an article on why Anne of Green Gables was banned in Soviet-controlled Poland: https://www.transpositions.co.uk/banning-anne-why-the-soviets-were-afraid-of-ann...

I love the idea that Anne inspired hope and resistance against an authoritarian regime. 👩🏻‍🦰💚 A couple of quotes in the comments! ⤵️ #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

BarbaraJean “If you were compiling a list of novels banned for being dangerous and encouraging dissent, Lucy Maud Montgomery‘s charming children‘s classic Anne of Green Gables might not seem an obvious choice. Yet for several years during the Soviet control of Poland, Montgomery‘s novel was banned as a ‘subversive‘ book that was feared by the authoritarian regime because it was seen as inspiring hope and resistance to authority.” 10mo
BarbaraJean “…the authorities banned the book when they realised its importance to the Polish resistance effort. But copies produced by the dissident samizdat press continued to circulate. By drawing on the collective resource of individually memorised passages and preserved pages, the defiant samizdat movement was able to continue to distribute illegal copies of the cherished book.” Reminds me of Fahrenheit 451! 10mo

Mehso-so

The story of Anne, an orphan and girl with a big imagination.

I liked and didn‘t like this book, I liked the story but the main character is really quite annoying in my opinion. She doesn‘t stop taking, overreacts to minor slights, and is very vain. As time went on, these things lessened but I already was annoyed with her by the end of the book.

StayCurious Haha ouch. I guess Anne is not everyone‘s cup of raspberry cordial 😊 14mo

Kathleen Kelly‘s mom advised to read this with a box of Kleenex. Which I never understood until my reread of this as an adult. I cried. I cried quite a bit actually. Part nostalgia and part realizing Anne‘s predicament as a neglected orphan, escaping along with Anne in her imaginations. And then falling in love with Montgomery‘s gorgeous writing all over again. She declined a picture, but kiddo is reading the tagged for school this week. She waited to start it and now she only has tomorrow and part of Saturday to finish (I assigned it; I‘d totally give her until Sunday but won‘t tell her that yet because we‘re learning self-discipline for long-range assignments). Now she says it‘s a race, so she turned down our HP read-aloud to keep reading Anne with her bedtime snack and tea! 😍

Listening to Rachel McAdams narrating this novel was such a treat! She was able to bring so much life and character to the story that I‘m not sure I would‘ve gotten if I had read it myself. My first time reading this with my ears as an #audiobook. Barbara Caruso was a very good narrator, although sometimes a bit too elderly sounding when she's doing young people's voices. The story, of course, is an all-time favourite. I still cry every time when Matthew dies. I think I'll try the next one in the series on audio too.

🎧📖 Shy Matthew & Grumpy Marilla (brother & sister) mean to adopt a boy to help on their farm but Matthew comes home with a red-haired 11yo girl named Anne.

Anne speaks her mind, gets in trouble, learns/teaches lessons & daydreams her days away with her wild imagination. Wholesome. Dated.

This story was completely new to me. I went in blind. I enjoyed the story but not the audiobook. Ended up with the kindle.

Loved the characters.

“Anne Shirley, what have you done to your hair? Why, it's GREEN!”
Green it might be called, if it were any earthly color—a queer, dull, bronzy green, with streaks here and there of the original red to heighten the ghastly effect. Never in all her life had Marilla seen anything so grotesque as Anne's hair at that moment.
“Yes, it's green . . . I thought nothing could be as bad as red hair. But now I know it's ten times worse to have green hair.”
