Out of The Easy
Out of The Easy | Ruta Sepetys
A haunting peek at the life of a teenage girl in 1950s New Orleans.--Entertainment WeeklyIts 1950, and as the French Quarter of New Orleans simmers with secrets, seventeen-year-old Josie Moraine is silently stirring a pot of her own. Known among locals as the daughter of a brothel prostitute, Josie wants more out of life than the Big Easy has to offer. She devises a plan get out, but a mysterious death in the Quarter leaves Josie tangled in an investigation that will challenge her allegiance to her mother, her conscience, and Willie Woodley, the brusque madam on Conti Street. Josie is caught between the dream of an elite college and a clandestine underworld. New Orleans lures her in her quest for truth, dangling temptation at every turn, and escalating to the ultimate test. With characters as captivating as those in her internationally bestselling novelBetween Shades of Gray,Ruta Sepetys skillfully creates a rich story of secrets, lies, and the haunting reminder that decisions can shape our destiny. From the Trade Paperback edition.

2019 Book 48: Although this book started out a little strange—“My mother‘s a prostitute”—it did pique my interest and ended up being a pretty good story, considering the main setting is a brothel. I was proud of the main character in the decisions she made with the horrible mother she had been given. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

DrexEdit I'm definitely a sucker for a good opening line. That one would definitely grab my attention! 😊 1w

This was a fun light read :) I alternated between the print and audible versions and honestly enjoyed both.

This is the story of Josie, daughter of a prostitute, daughter of New Orleans. A story about finding your people, finding yourself, and the choices you make.

There were some really sad parts, but the ending was perfect! I loved what she changed her last name to! (Pay attention to some of the characters last names😉)

4.5 🌟 This was a fun and entertaining read. I thoroughly enjoyed the rich descriptions of life in the Big Easy as well as Sepety's characters. Josie is the daughter of a wretched prostitute who is always pulling the rug out from beneath her at every opportunity. Josie wants to get out of Lousiana and out from the dark cloud her mother has cast over her future and start a life for herself. Full of twists and turns this is her story.

Well, I wasn't planning on finishing this tonight, but ya know. I got so angry about everything going wrong for poor Josie that I just had to finish and see if she got her happy ending or not. UNPOPULAR OPINION:
This book was NOT for me. I was expecting something like “The Myth of Perpetual Summer”, (which I adored), and somehow ended up reading this simplistic story that had zero atmosphere (which is crucial when writing about New Orleans), bland characters, and somehow the mafia and a predictable “murder/mystery” ended up being involved. Sorry if this review is harsh, just sour that I spent 3 hours reading a book that gave me nothing

Ruta's writing style sucks you in and makes you feel like you are living in the time period of the book. It is 1950 in New Orleans and Josie is just trying to make it on her own. Her mother is a prostitute so many people think she does the same thing. Josie just wants to go to college and get out of the big easy. But when certain events unfold she is just fighting to stay alive. I loved all the characters and each one made the book!

Mehso-so

Could‘ve been a good read if there was... more of an actual plot? A lot of things left unanswered, like the author just forgot to finish the story. Patrick‘s apparent personal confession, wtf happened to Willie, resolution to the murder...so many points left on the cutting room floor. Also a lot of telling not showing, and weird to have a book set in the South in the 50s w/nothing about race. I liked Willie tho, & the setting was done well. 2/5 ⭐️

alisonrose Also, the author couldn‘t seem to decide how she felt about sex work, falling into cliches of “sex work is a horrible life” and also “all the women are happy with hearts of gold.” She had everyone act like it would be awful for Josie but never showed anything bad in the other characters‘ lives (except raids). So she clearly seems to look down on it but also had a very limited and sanitized understanding. 1y

Ruta Sepetys is a great storyteller who creates fascinating and unique characters. This book is a different kind of story than her others that I‘ve read, but so good. In 1950, Josie is struggling to escape the influence of her mother‘s life choices as a prostitute in a New Orleans brothel. She has some great friends for support, but she also has to fight to make her own way and figure out how to leave New Orleans for a fresh start in college.

I love reading books set in places I‘m visiting. I‘m headed to New Orleans soon, so this was a great choice. It‘s historical fiction set in the ‘50s. A young girl grows up cleaning a brothel where her mother is a prostitute. She spends her days working in a local bookstore. The author created incredibly vivid characters, like the madame Willie, and threw in a murder mystery just for fun. The atmosphere of the city is what really sells the book!

Beckys_Books I also love when I read something set somewhere I've been and can picture it. Hate it when details are not accurate. 2y
