While this book is handling some pretty heavy topics, the language in this book is musical. This was a joy to read.

The whole narrative is written just how Adunni, a fourteen year old Nigerian girl, speaks.

A hard-hitting look at the cultural aspects of Nigeria, the treatment of young girls, and the class system.

May all girls find their louding voices.

My book club‘s most recent pick. I probably wouldn‘t have chosen this on my own without book club, but I‘m glad I read it. Started a little slow and the character‘s speaking and thinking style/pattern took a minute to get used to. Really picked up about halfway thru. Reminded me of the lengths some people have go to just to have access to things that were relatively easy for me, like an education. I appreciate this perspective and Adunni‘s voice.

Such a good read!

Adunni is a young girl from a small village that wants to go to school. Unfortunately, she is forced into marriage and then working for Big Madam in Lagos until she can fulfil her dream.

I could hear and feel Adunni throughout the book. I was rooting for her through all her misfortunes. An inspiring book to read and makes you appreciate what you have.

Because tomorrow will be better than today...what a wonderful book. I feel there needs to be a sequel to look back at what she achieved in the future!

The things we take for granted…

This week has been all about self care! My husband has definitely spoiled me! Now it‘s time for a relaxing bath, a facial, and a new book! I‘m reading this one for a buddy read on Facebook. 💔

“She didn‘t old, my mama, only 40 something years of age before she die, and every day I feel a paining in my spirit, for her quiet, laugh and voice, for the soft of her arms, for her eyes that say more things than her mouth ever speak.”

This book was so compelling. I was throughly invested in Adunni‘s journey.
Although her story is traumatic and painful to read, she, as a character is a delight to spend time with.
It‘s a powerful book with a beautiful message.

🌟🌟🌟🌟A wonderful story about a young 14 year old Nigerian girl navigating her way from a small country village to the city of Legos in search of an education so she can be free of a life of servitude. The book shines a light on trafficking, and poverty with just the right about of hope. I recommend the audio version to understand the broken English better.

I have a hard time mixing nonfiction and fiction and choosing one favorite so am choosing one of each. Both are excellent but only How the Word is Passed made my #Top22of22.

So I‘m about a two-thirds of the way through this book and find it sort of a slog because the characters are either too good or too evil, the good characters are too preachy, and the pidgin English is becoming very annoying!

I‘m trying to read more books by #blackauthors, but the life of the young #Nigerian woman in this novel is really hard to read about. I‘m about a third of the way through the story and hope things get better for our protagonist.

This book could be hard to read at times, but is an important story to tell and be heard. Adunni‘s strength and value of education is inspiring and I hope my louding voice can be as positive as hers!

It took me a little while to get into this book (I started a few months ago & didn‘t make it far), finally went back to it & so happy I did. It was an amazing story but also very difficult subject matter. Adunni‘s story is compelling & one that unfortunately many young girls face daily in Nigeria. So good. Equally horrified and hopeful. I'm not sure why but this type of unreliable narrator is my fav. If anyone needs one for #Nigeria look for a copy of this.

This story had wonderful (as well as horrific) characters and gave me insight into Nigerian culture and history. It's very brutal in places, but the author softens the tone with the narrator Adunni's humour and optimism.

I really enjoyed this one! 14 year old Nigerian Adunni is forced into an abusive marriage and then sent to live as a housemaid, along the way trying to educate herself and wanting a better life. A very well written debut novel.

My second #vacationread, and I thought it was excellent. It works for #Nigeria for #readingafrica.

Adunni is a 14 year old Nigerian girl who grew up in a small village. Her mom passed away and her alcoholic father disregards the promise he made and sells Adunni into a marriage with a much older man as a third wife. That‘s just the beginning.

Adunni‘s strong spirit and her wish to do good for her country will stay with me. All the TW though.

This was such a very good read. Written in broken English, it‘s the story of a 14 yr old girl who so desperately wants to go to school to learn to be a teacher. Adunni, a 14-yo girl in #Nigeria, was raised by a mom who did everything she possibly could to ensure her daughter could get an education and have a voice in a world ruled by men. When her mother dies, her dreams are shattered when she‘s sold into marriage by her drunk cruel father who finds girls useless. Adunni suffers relentless abuse but works to find her way and her voice, even if it is broken English. An excellent story and I learned a ⬇️

I‘m enjoying a quiet moment with my book and tea at the lakehouse. All the women in my family will be joining me soon for a long crafting weekend here. I‘m looking forward to it but appreciating the quiet for now.

Beautiful debut from a powerful new voice. Adunni is an unforgettable protagonist that meets the traumas and challenges of her life with strength, humor, tenacity, and optimism. Her story is a difficult one, but avoids the “trauma porn” territory that so many other books like this can veer into. I wish we could know what happens next in Adunni‘s story, but I was left knowing she is on her way to changing the world. 4⭐️

We would all do well to remember Adunni‘s wisdom. 🥰

Finished this yesterday. I‘m still thinking about it! Adunni‘s thirst for knowledge & passion for helping others makes her a wonderful character. She goes through so much, but comes out with her passion, strength & kindness intact. This is one of those books that has been languishing on my shelf for much too long. I wish I had read it earlier. Definitely check content warnings before reading for triggers.

This was a bonus book for me this month—I was ahead of my goal of reading 1 book per week with my eyeballs instead of my ears, so I pulled it off the BOTM shelf and just devoured it. An excellent debut with a dynamic, smart heroine that I loved rooting for. I really like that it‘s written in dialectic, but thought that was a little inconsistent at times, which was distracting. Still, a hopeful, shining book that I‘m glad I read.

I stayed up until half 4 in the morning to finish this book. It was fantastic.

I can't comment on the authenticity of Adunni's voice, but she is such a marvellous character: straight-talking, intellectually curious, brave, determined and observant. She felt very real to me, as did the world she inhabits. It all came alive on the page.

This book was engaging, smart, heartbreaking, hopeful, witty, infuriating and enlightening.
