The denizens of Ankh-Morpork fancy they've seen just about everything. But then comes the Ankh-Morpork Times, struggling scribe William de Worde's upper-crust, newsletter turned Discworld's first paper of record. An ethical joulnalist, de Worde has a proclivity for investigating stories -- a nasty habit that soon creates powerful enemies eager to stop his presses. And what better way than to start the Inquirer, a titillating (well, what else would it be?) tabloid that conveniently interchanges what's real for what sells. But de Worde's got an inside line on the hot story concerning Ankh-Morpork's leading patrician Lord Vetinari. The facts say Vetinari is guilty. But as William de Worde learns, facts don't always tell the whole story. There's that pesky little thing called the truth ...

William de Worde invents the newspaper and exposes dastardly political shenanigans to replace Lord Vetinari as Patrician.

Not perhaps Pratchett's funniest but plenty of wordplay and wry observations about the world.

Zoes_Human It did have many excellent observations. In particular the following has always stuck with me:

“Insofar as he'd formed any opinion of her, it was that she suffered from misplaced gentility and the mistaken belief that etiquette meant good breeding. She mistook mannerisms for manners.”

Fire was always the terror in those parts of the city where wood and thatch predominated. That was why everyone had been so dead set against any form of fire brigade, reasoning—with impeccable Ankh-Morpork logic—that any bunch of men who were paid to put out fires would naturally see to it that there was a plentiful supply of fires to put out.

And William was good with words. Truth was what he told. Honesty was sometimes not the same thing.

"Ankh-Morpork people considered that spelling was a sort of optional extra. They believed in it in the same way they believed in punctuation; it didn‘t matter where you put it, so long as it was there."

And haven't we all known people like that?

Sir Terry aims his wit at the world of newspapers with the usual hilarious results. More self-disciplined than many Discworld novels, this is categorised as a standalone though many favourites appear, including Vines, Vetinari and Cut-me-own-throat Dibbler, without whom Ankh-Morpork wouldn't be quite the same.

Vansa This book is spectacular. It's SO real and so relevant even today. 2y

Finished this while waiting for the bus! Really enjoyed the development of both characters & the newspaper throughout the novel. And it was also interesting to see Vimes from a different perspective & not that of the Watch.

"The truth is still putting on its boots when a lie is running around the world..."
I'm slowly working my way through Discworld, dreading the day when I reach the end. This particular adventure is now one of my favorites and how timely. Fake news, politics, untrustworthy leaders, a plague of dogs, dwarves, vampires, zombies, and, of course, meat on a stick. Thank you, Sir Terry.

I only read 3 books this month, but they were the right books at the right time. At the moment, I'm reading the 5th book in the Hitchhikers "trilogy" and when I'm done, maybe I'll be ready for some of the more intense books from the TBR pile. If not, I still have some Discworld books that need reading! #MayBookFlowers #BestofMay

A favourite reread, in this era of interesting times. Pratchett takes us on another meaningful, sharply funny turn through a reality with more than an eerily sharp grip on The Truth. Magnificent satire, eloquent fantasy, and a good laugh in one. "The Truth Will Make Ye Fret"
