Murder for Christmas
Murder for Christmas | Francis Duncan
32 posts | 17 read | 18 to read
A classic mystery for the festive season: mulled wine, mince pies...and murder. Mordecai Tremaine, former tobacconist and perennial lover of romance novels, has been invited to spend Christmas in the sleepy village of Sherbroome at the country retreat of one Benedict Grame. Arriving on Christmas Eve, he finds that the revelries are in full flow - but so too are tensions amongst the assortment of guests. Midnight strikes and the party-goers discover that it's not just presents nestling under the tree...there's a dead body too. A dead body that bears a striking resemblance to Father Christmas. With the snow falling and the suspicions flying, it's up to Mordecai to sniff out the culprit - and prevent someone else from getting murder for Christmas. 'Kept guessing to the end, I am left wondering why it has taken so long to discover Francis Duncan... With some 20 crime novels to his credit, a relaunch seems long overdue' Daily Mail 'Who can resist a seasonal whodunnit? This is a bah-humbugs ideal read' Lady 'The book nods towards Agatha Christie but retains a crackling atmosphere of dread and horror that will chill the heart however warm your fireside' Metro 'A wonderfully cosy read and a great way to while away a winters evening' Nudge 'This is a golden age murder mystery thatll certainly appeal to lovers of Agatha Christie or anyone who enjoys a good, old-fashioned whodunit... This is a book that could be read at any time of year but would certainly make perfect festive reading. It has humour, excellent characterisation and a gentle tone that would sit well following the after-Queens Speech nap' crimefictionlover

I picked this up because it‘s the holiday season and thought it would be fun. I wasn‘t wrong! I read it quickly, in just a day. The mystery was not obvious but also not impossible to solve, which is exactly what I like in a mystery. I also liked the cast of characters and the writing style.

Finished this one last night and I really enjoyed it. It took me over a week to read which is odd for a little book, but I loved the main character, Mordecai Tremain, what a name! I‘m tempted to find out whether there are more books with him in, but I need to get my the pile down a bit more before I do!!

My wife gave me this book for Christmas 🎄 I was very excited to read it, but the first 150 pages are interminably slow. Things pick up after the murder. My wife and I enjoy the My Favorite Murder podcast, so “stay sexy don‘t get murdered,” as they say! ☠️

JamieArc I read this last year - was very drawn in by the cover, but found it very “meh.” I used to listen to MFM all the time. SSDGM ☠️😊 13mo

A nice cozy Christmas mystery. It was slow-paced but short, and I liked how the author described scenes and characters.

This fit the bill for an Xmas mystery. Nothing earth shattering, but a pleasant read. I did not see the solution coming. 👍🏾

Christmas reading 🎄 I have low expectations of this based on reviews, but I'll give it a try and see if I enjoy the setting if not the mystery.

Another year, another lack lustre Christmas crime novel... got a bit lost with characters being referred to by their first name by some people and the surnames by others. Plot had promise but the pace was plodding, the reveal was good but didn‘t save it.

Tamra Oh no, I should probably unstack then. I just started 14mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Tamra, it‘s entirely possible that I expect too much from Christmas themed murder mysteries (it‘s better than the one I read last year) 14mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag Is an English Murder good? I‘m quite keen for a solid mystery with characters that don‘t drive one up the wall... @Tamra 14mo

Tamra @thegirlwiththelibrarybag I just started it last night so I can‘t say - not far enough in. But I did read this last year and enjoyed it. 14mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Tamra, I‘ve read that one... it was quite good! None of the British Murder Mysteries seem to be available on kindle 😭 might see if I can track An English Murder down 14mo
JamieArc I was disappointed with this too. I was taken in by the cover, but the story wasn‘t great. 14mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @JamieArc, it didn‘t live up to the cover 😕 14mo

I wish my library hold for this book had come in just a week or two earlier, but I'm still enjoying this English country house murder mystery.

It really makes me appreciate how short most of Agatha Christie's books are, though. Why are short, sharp, concise mysteries such a lost art?

I enjoyed this cozy. I read Christmas mysteries for the atmosphere almost more than the plot and this was a Dickensian house party with a murder and plenty of characters and twists. Some on litsy have found this boring but it was exactly what I thought it would be- a Christmas houseparty murder in a 1940s English manor house. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is a holiday story you read for the Christmas setting and because the cover is so beautiful. I didn‘t much care for the main character - he even annoyed me a bit, but I think he was supposed to. He had high standards to live up to though since I am so invested in Louise Penny‘s Inspector Gamache.

🎄🔎🎄 I did so desperately want to love this one. It started out so well. A Christmas house party, eclectic assorted guests with agendas, a romance loving sleuth, and a murder. Yet, the novel fell a little flat for me and had a slow pace with the sleuthing being rather obvious, as if Tremaine was working off a checklist. Followed up with a rushed ending.

Still, it has a marvelous cover going for it. 🎅🏻

Jess_Read_This @NatalieR @mabell It wasn‘t a horrible book; it just didn‘t capture me to the point where I couldn‘t put it down. A few times I had to rein my mind back in as it was drifting. All the terrific plot elements were there, it just was missing something for me. 2y

Jess_Read_This @rohit-sawant @TheSketchyReader Thank you! I‘ve had a recent string of So-So reads and want to put a P.S. on each that I‘m not a harsh critic, really! 😂 I always have a sense of guilt in giving a so-so or pan review. 2y
elkeo_TheBookDragon You are having trouble getting a good christmas read! 😕 2y
Jess_Read_This @elkeo I know!! I think the one I have going for me is A Christmas Carol! But it‘s rather scary how I‘ve made a few comments that are eerily Scrooge like!! 😂😂😂😂😂 2y
SaraRosett I felt the same way about this book. It just didn‘t hold my attention. I bailed and I really wanted to like it. 😕 2y
Jess_Read_This @SaraRosett I really wanted to like it too. It had everything I like in a book but fell flat for me. On paper, all the elements for the story were perfect yet my mind kept straying while reading it. (edited) 2y
SaraRosett @Jess_Reads My experience too. And I usually don‘t give up in Christmas reads! 2y

🔎”And there was, thought Mordecai Tremaine, no smoke without fire”.

I can completely appreciate the nod to Agatha Christie in this sentence by Francis Duncan.
