It (Media Tie-In)
It (Media Tie-In) | Stephen King
It: Chapter Two--soon to be a major motion picture in 2019! Stephen King's terrifying, classic #1 New York Times bestseller, "a landmark in American literature" (Chicago Sun-Times)--about seven adults who return to their hometown to confront a nightmare they had first stumbled on as teenagers...an evil without a name: It. Welcome to Derry, Maine. It's a small city, a place as hauntingly familiar as your own hometown. Only in Derry the haunting is real. They were seven teenagers when they first stumbled upon the horror. Now they are grown-up men and women who have gone out into the big world to gain success and happiness. But the promise they made twenty-eight years ago calls them reunite in the same place where, as teenagers, they battled an evil creature that preyed on the city's children. Now, children are being murdered again and their repressed memories of that terrifying summer return as they prepare to once again battle the monster lurking in Derry's sewers. Readers of Stephen King know that Derry, Maine, is a place with a deep, dark hold on the author. It reappears in many of his books, including Bag of Bones, Hearts in Atlantis, and 11/22/63. But it all starts with It. "Stephen King's most mature work" (St. Petersburg Times), "It will overwhelm you...to be read in a well-lit room only" (Los Angeles Times).

Well, I didn‘t know if I‘d ever truly get around to reading this book on my shelf, but a favorite author and podcaster Laura Tremaine hosts a Stephen King Summer book club and this was the first selection this summer. It wasn‘t as scary as I thought it would be! But I still left it face down anytime I wasn‘t reading it 🫣 SK is an amazing writer - the opening scene was so real. 💧 It feels like a huge accomplishment to have read this! 4.5⭐️

A "Something Wicked This Way Comes" post reminded me how much I like "kids on bikes vs. supernatural evil" books. I've read "It", of course, "Summer of Night", "Boy's Life", "Shadowshow" by Brad Strickland, and Thomas Tessier's "Phantom". I'm also familiar with (but haven't read) Brain Keene's "Ghoul". Anyone know of any more I can add to this list?

My all-time favorite Stephen King book, forever. My heart was taken by Pennywise a long time ago and Bill Skarsgard reignited the flame in 2017.

I read this book as a child and despite my efforts to be anything but a scaredy cat, I remember putting the book in the freezer each time I closed the book for the day.

This book is absolutely horrifying in the best way. King is a G.O.A.T and I appreciate whatever goes on in his attic.

1. Stephen King - though, I haven‘t read many lately. I've only read 3 in the last 5 years. I enjoy reading King with a buddy... Any upcoming Kingalongs? (Lately, you might think I've been on an Ann Patchett streak.)

Definitely the best Stephen King book i‘ve read so far. It had the most descriptive horror/gore scenes that really painted a picture, but also realistic and in-depth characters that sometimes it feels like you‘re reading about yourself. It was slightly mature at some points, but it really contributed to the story.

It's strange that even though I had some issues with IT, I feel in the mood for another Stephen King pretty soon... I think it's because I was so immersed.

Any ideas @vivastory @TrishB ?? I've heard Salem's Lot & Misery are pretty good. I've already read The Shining &The Bachman Books.

TrishB Both of those are good choices, Salem‘s Lot is horror, Misery isn‘t. I would also highly recommend Needful Things. 10mo
TrishB Also Dr Sleep as the follow up to The Shining. 10mo
vivastory Salem's Lot is firmly in my top 5 King books. The atmosphere in it is fantastic. Highly recommend. I haven't read Misery yet. Shining is great too. 10mo
See All 12 Comments
vivastory Oops, I see you read The Shining. I also really like his short stories, esp Night Shift. It has the stories that are the basis for countless adaptations “Children of the Corn,“ the original story for Salem's Lot before it was a novel, “Sometimes they Come Back,“
Trucks“ (which is the basis for one of my fave so bad its good movies of all time: Maximum Overdrive) & the stories that are in “Cat's Eye“
(edited) 10mo
RaeLovesToRead @TrishB @vivastory Thank you both 😊 Next time I am in Waterstones, I'll pick myself up a copy of Salem's Lot! I don't read many short stories, but I'll give them a look too and I'll have to look up Needful Things (not heard of it before.) I loved The Shining book (I seem to be the only person in the world who hates the film 😅😅) 10mo
vivastory @RaeLovesToRead The movie is one of my favorites, but I know a lot of people really dislike it too 10mo
TrishB Not a lover of the film. 10mo
RaeLovesToRead @vivastory @TrishB Everyone I speak to seems to love it 😄 10mo
DaveGreen7777 You might try “The Talisman”. It‘s more of a dark fantasy novel than horror, so it‘s a bit of a different flavor from him. One of my favorite novels by King (although he did co-write it with another author)! 10mo
RaeLovesToRead @DaveGreen7777 Ooh, another Stephen King book I haven't heard of! I will have a look 😊 I was supposed to not be buying more fantasy books, haha. I have *ahem* rather a lot still to read 😳 10mo

Until the last few hundred pages, IT was a cinematic masterpiece of storytelling. The sinister clown antics and malice of Derry were stunningly rendered and brought layers and layers of story to life.

I was expecting it to dovetail to a harmonious conclusion, but unfortunately the ending dragged and dragged. And then it hit a bum note that completed my irritation so thoroughly that I came away with a negative impression of the whole experience.

Soubhiville Unfortunately King‘s endings usually are lacking for me too. 10mo
RaeLovesToRead I could probably have forgiven the tedious ending if King hadn't made the only 11 year old girl have sex with all 6 of her friends in the sewers. And then one of the boys remembers the way out! 10mo
RaeLovesToRead Throughout the whole book she's brutalised and sexualised and then at the end she's like "I know what we need to do! Who's first?" It's so tenderly and earnestly written, it's like King doesn't see a problem with this as a plot point. 10mo
See All 14 Comments
RaeLovesToRead @Soubhiville I was writing a rant about the ending for Goodreads, but in the end I just copied and pasted my Litsy review. See above for further comment if you have read the book. (Very spoilery if you haven't!) 10mo
Soubhiville I first read this when I was maybe 14 or 15 and absolutely loved it. Except the end, but adult me couldn‘t remember why. I reread it as a early 40‘s adult, and had entirely blocked that scene out of my memory. Wonder why 🙄. 10mo
RaeLovesToRead @Soubhiville Using sex to progress a plot is something I find rather galling. The fact that they were pre-pubescent makes it so much worse!! I stopped reading The Demi-Monde series because every time they got into a sticky situation one of the women would be like "I'll distract the bad guys with my boobs!" ?? 10mo
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Yes! The kiddie gang bang to save the world ruined it for me. Like WTF, why? Men though, that's why. I can read and get on board with a lot of messed up stuff, but that just didn't even make sense. 10mo
RaeLovesToRead @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I don't mind taboo subjects in books either, but in this case it was just so unnecessary! Beverly was the groups sharpshooter... she should have had a central role in taking down the monster... but nope. And then after the sex one of the boys is like... "ahhhh we should have taken a left back there..." What the actual hell?! ?? 10mo
RaeLovesToRead I initially gave it 3 stars, but I've upped it to 4 because there was still much to admire. Sometimes I just don't know how to rate a book. 10mo
DaveGreen7777 This is exactly how I felt! I was enthralled by the story thru the 1,000 page build-up (other than that really icky moment… WTF King?!?), but the final battle was such a let-down, to the point where it almost felt like parody! Grand finale… more like BLAND finale, am I right?! 🤦🏻‍♂️ (edited) 10mo
RaeLovesToRead @DaveGreen7777 Oh my days, bland finale.... 🤣🤣🤣 You can't see me, but I am making a face that looks like this ---> 🤨🤨🤨 haha. Which was pretty much the same face I made during THAT scene. 10mo
RaeLovesToRead @DaveGreen7777 Have you played final fantasy 8??... final boss battle was a little like a Tonberry attack... *shuffle shuffle shuffle* *shuffle shuffle shuffle* *doink* (If you haven't then you won't have the foggiest what I'm on about, sorry!) 😆 10mo
DaveGreen7777 @RaeLovesToRead BWAH-HA-HA!!! I wish I could see the 🤨 look! 😂🤣 I did start FFVIII, but I didn‘t get very far into it, I‘m afraid! 🙈 10mo
