The After Party
The After Party: A Novel | Anton DiSclafani
From the nationally bestselling author of The Yonahlossee Riding Camp for Girls comesa story of 1950s Texas socialites and the one irresistible, controversial woman at the bright, hot center of it all.Joan Fortier is the epitome of Texas glamour and the center of the 1950s Houston social scene. Tall, blonde, beautiful, and strong, she dominates the room and the gossip columns. Every man who sees her seems to want her; every woman just wants to be her. But this is a highly ordered world of garden clubs and debutante balls. The money may flow as freely as the oil, but the freedom and power all belong to the men. What happens when a woman of indecorous appetites and desires like Joan wants more? What does it do to her best friend? Devoted to Joan since childhood, Cece Buchanan is either her chaperone or her partner in crime, depending on whom you ask. But as Joans radical behavior escalates, Ceces perspective shiftsforcing one provocative choice to appear the only one there is.A thrilling glimpse into the sphere of the rich and beautiful at a memorable moment in history, The After Party unfurls a story of friendship as obsessive, euphoric, consuming, and complicated as any romance. From the Hardcover edition.

This book promised several storylines that had the potential to develop into something interesting. Unfortunately, none of them did. For the life of me I cannot figure out what makes the MC, Joan, so damn interesting to everyone- and the author never really explains either. Her friend Cece is obsessed with her, bordering on a “single white female” situation, but without any of the drama or intrigue. Boring.

Godmotherx5 I recall seeing lots of negative reviews after it came out. I‘m never sure who to trust, sounds like you took one for the team. 6y
Reviewsbylola Nooooooooooo. Would I like this? 6y
emilyhaldi @Reviewsbylola no. It's so boring. I had to start skimming about 60% of the way through 6y
Megabooks I really liked this book. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I did find parts repetitive. Still glad I libraried it. 6y

#TBRtemptation post 2! The 1950s Houston socialite scene is full of garden clubs and balls, with Fortier at the white-hot center. All the men want her, all the women want to be her. While it's a man's world, she craves for more. Which leads to a major crisis for her best (and childhood)friend--or partner-in-crime--Cece. A friendship as obsessive, euphoric, and complicated as any romance. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Jaimelire Sounds like a book I should read. 7y

And out of the ordinary pic for me, I was engaged from the very first in the story of 1950s Houston. Two friends living very different lives, making very different choices in the world that did not allow women to make choices.

Intriguing for the mystery at the center of the book, but some of the characters' motivations are amorphous and hard to pin down. Still good on a mostly superficial level, and difficult to put down.

Oh, what a bummer. I really enjoyed his last novel, The Yonahlossee Riding Camp for Girls. This was just overwrought with drama that just didn't resolve in a way that was satisfying. I love women friendship stories but this just wasn't complex or layered.

This was not exactly what I expected but I mostly enjoyed it. While I was reading, I found myself wrapped up in Cece's life but when I put the book down the story didn't stay with me like a really good book should. I found I wasn't excited to get back to it and just continued to read because I was mildly curious about what would happen. Overall, I kind of liked it but wouldn't go around recommending it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

LitHousewife Did you read her first book? I got bored and never finished it, so I've been leery of this one even though I love the cover. 8y
MeganAnn @LitHousewife I have not read her first book. The description sounded interesting but after reading this one I don't know that I would get another one of her books. 8y

Zelma I am so excited about The Mandibles. ❤️ Lionel Shriver. 8y
Lacythebookworm The Mandibles! Yes, yes, yes! 🌟 8y
BethFishReads @Zelma @Lacythebookworm hope you both love it. Wasn't my favorite of hers, but I might be in the minority. 8y
Zelma @BethFishReads did you read Big Brother? It was oddly compelling but ultimately unsatisfying for me. I will read her no matter what, even if it doesn't work for me. Her books are so uncomfortable and make me think about things that are taboo. It's like broccoli; sometimes amazing, good for me, but not the guilt of an ice cream sundae. 8y
BethFishReads @Zelma I get that totally, which is why I also read whatever she writes 8y

I enjoyed this one, even when I didn't like either of the main characters at times. The story of best friends, set in the 50s,gives us a fairly good glimpse of how little we often know about the people we're close to,or think we're close to.

4🌟Strip away the fun glitz and glamour, and this is a story about how well a woman can know her best friend as an adult. I just got some shocking news from a dear friend, so I will say, you don't know your girlfriends completely. This book mixes friendship & wealth in the Houston 1950s social scene
