Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistlestop Cafe
Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistlestop Cafe | Fannie Flagg
Released for the first time in mass market paperback, this classic and folksy novel takes readers back to the thirties, where a friendship blooms between two girls who run a homey, little cafe in Alabama. This book wasn‘t as good as I thought it‘d be. I thought there were too many characters and it skipped around a lot. The main characters I liked though. I ended up rating it three stars. It was a good book and nice to read something different. It just won‘t end up being one of my favorites. Read it for prompt #30 a book featuring an elderly character. #ATY2019 #aroundtheyearin52books

A southern tale of friendship and murder. I am not sure why we needed Evelyne‘s storyline but overall it was a good tale.

I loved this movie and read the book because it was a book club pick. I very much enjoyed it! Solid 4 stars.
I love the characters and the voices. I liked the crazy timeline and short chapters. Loved the little town news clips in between.
I hate that the ending in the movie made it seem like Ninny and Idgie were the same person. The book is clear that they were seperate people because Ninny married Idgy's brother. 🙄
Definitely a #recommendread

QueenJen Nah, just that Idgy was still alive. I believe at the beginning of the movie it states that she married Idgy's brother. This was one that I loved both the book and movie 6mo

This is a charming novel. Its been years since I watched the movie which I loved and will now have to rewatch. I think having seen the movie made it easier to follow the story given all the jumping in time. Having said that I thought the the author made it very clear where you were in time. I enjoyed all the little side stories that didn't make into the movie and the different devices used to tell the story (newsletter, news paper articles, etc).

Nebklvr This is my bookclub‘s selection for this week. Need to get on it 6mo

I love a story that follows multiple people and multiple timelines. I felt the racism of the time was laid bare in such away that the reader could see that it was awful without specific comment from the author. Then Evelyn went to a black church and I felt like she was visiting a zoo and it kinda lost me. Overall, I‘d give it a pick, with a caveat about the racism. I wish the relationship between Idgie and Ruth had been more explicitly stated.

This was absolutely as lovely as the movie but I think I was able to follow the story better because I knew the basics already. There is a LOT of switching between timelines which didn‘t translate that well in the ebook version so it might have been confusing for someone encountering the story for the first time.

Really enjoying this. I don‘t think I even knew this was a book until I read an article about the movie being straightwashed. I ran straight to the library and got on the long waitlist at the library. Apparently everyone else read the same article! 😂

Fannie Flagg‘s books never jumped out at me as something I would like to read, that is until I figured out than she is none other than Fannie of Match Game fame. NYT Bestselling Novelist or star of the Match Game, which is the bigger achievement? (Obviously the latter)
Her biggest achievement may actually be that she became an author at all - Fannie has dyslexia. She pushed past discouragement and did what she loved.

PROS: it made me laugh at some points. It's a short read. I like Alabama. I like fried green tomatoes.

CONS: it jumps through times so often I had a hard time following the story. It's not well elaborated: I mean the characters are not well described, there are just a few hints of their personalities. It is too confusing, I really couldn't understand what the main story was about.

Now you can all rest. I won't be posting about it anymore 🤣🌙

thebacklistbook Watch the movie it will really help with the confusion. 10mo

Now that I am almost done with Anna Karenina, it's time to think of what to read next!
I think I've made up my mind already, but I am looking for suggestions... let's see who has read one them (or all) and why they liked it so much (or not!)!

- Lolita, Vladimir Nabokov
- The Neverending Story, Michael Ende
- Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Cafe, Fannie Flagg

Any other suggestion is welcome though!

Karkar Oh I want to read all of these! 11mo
SailorMoon @Karkar me too! I just don't know which one to start from 🤣 11mo
Leniverse Lolita is good but I found it sickening and very hard to read. But it‘s an important book, because Lolita (the character) has been so misrepresented in popular thinking. The Neverending Story is a childhood favourite that I‘ve been meaning to read again (but it‘s always scary to read childhood favourites again as an adult). The third one I haven‘t read, but the movie was good. 11mo
See All 24 Comments
SailorMoon @Leniverse thanks for your opinion on the books! I am really curious about this Lolita character, especially if you say that she has been misrepresented in popular thinking! I'll find out soon enough what you mean, I guess ;) if I don't read it now, I will in a near future so... as for the Neverending Story, I totally get what you mean!!! I don't have a childhood book but I feel the same with Disney cartoons!!! 11mo
Leniverse Sadly the idea of Lolita has been shaped by the movie, where Lolita was 16. In the book she is 12... Nabokov himself was emphatically opposed to having a cover image featuring a girl, but most of the covers show a highly sexualised and seductive Lolita. 11mo
SailorMoon @Leniverse OMG I see how you must have found it sickening then! Thanks again for it all, it's a lot of information I didn't have! 11mo
Kaye Fried Green Tomatoes. I‘ve read it. It‘s terrific. A southern twisted tale that is terrific, entertaining and funny in some spots. Also great on audio. 11mo
SailorMoon @kaye thank you for your suggestion! I'm leaning towards it, tbh! 11mo
Kaye I haven‘t read Lolita and won‘t 🤢. I‘ve not read the other either. I think they made a movie of it ? It might be like fantasy ? They also made a movie of Fried Green Tomatoes. I liked the book a lot. Colorful characters. 11mo
AmberWB Fried Green Tomatoes is really good- that‘s what I‘d pick! 😊 11mo
SailorMoon @kaye yes, I've seen the movie made from The Fried Green Tomatoes book, and I loved it! I did watch it many years ago though, so it I will still have pleasure in reading the book because I don't remember the story quite well! Thanks! 11mo
SailorMoon @AmberWB I'm leaning towards it too, did you like it that much? 11mo
Billypar I would echo @Leniverse when it comes to Lolita- you should definitely read it, but it's a very challenging book- both for the subject-matter and how dense the prose is: Humbert's brain is a twisted and rambling place. I wouldn't read it after just having finished Anna Karenina- give your brain a break! But when you do, it's an excellent novel that makes you consider how an amoral personality might view the evil they do. 11mo
SailorMoon @Billypar thank you for your suggestion! I wasn't expecting such a challenging book, I must say... maybe due to the fact that -as @Leniverse said- Lolita's character is, in our minds, misinterpreted and a little older than in Nabokov's book. So yes, I think I might give my mind a break then, I'll welcome your suggestion! Thanks again! 11mo
BlameJennyJane Fried Green Tomatoes is wonderful. It‘s generally fun and light. There is some domestic violence and there racial injustices, but there is also strength and hope... and parts are downright hysterical. 11mo
SailorMoon @BlameJennyJane thanks for your suggestion! 😉🥰 11mo
BlameJennyJane @SailorMoon sure thing! Keep us posted on how you find them! 11mo
Freespirit @SailorMoon I have not read either. Lolita is in my pile to read and I realise it is controversial. Will be interested in your reviews😊 11mo
SailorMoon @Freespirit I picked "Fried Green Tomatoes" as next one to read... but I'll be reading Lolita some time in the near future, so I'll make sure to let you know ? 11mo
Freespirit Sounds great @SailorMoon 😍 11mo
juliegumdrop Lolita is one of the best books ever written. The narrator is a charming sociopath. It‘s brilliant and sick. 11mo
SailorMoon @juliegumdrop I'll definitely read it sometime soon! Thanks!!! 11mo
SomedayAlmost Lolita is brilliant in disturbing ways. Prepare yourself for the skilled, creepy rationalization of exploitation, but read on because it‘s so well done. 11mo

I really liked the construction of the book, with the different narratives, time jumps, and inclusion of the Weems Weekly/Birmingham newspapers. The presentation of Idgie and Ruth‘s relationship (not explicitly stated as lesbian, but suggested) was done very well. But the casual racism in the 1920s-30s sections needed examination in the 1980s sections. The narrator gets very fat-shamey (raise your hand if you remember diet culture in the 1980s).

balletbookworm The audiobook reader was very good. (I suppose I would have liked this a lot more had I read this in the 1980s, since there have been a lot of conversations about representation in the last few decades) 11mo

Listened to this on audio and thoroughly enjoyed it. I rewatched the movie a couple of months ago and realized I should probably read the book. I love the more fleshed out relationships in the book and the interesting side characters that didn't make it into the movie. That being said, I think this is one time the book and movie might be about equal. 😊

This book had the very rare talent of reading like an easy and charming southern conversation full of pleasantries while approaching some hard topics that existed in our country 80 years ago and still exist today. I have a soft spot for books filled with eccentric characters and this was no exception. You'll tear up at least once while reading, either because of the love or because of the heartbreak.
