Mehso-so

This is an interesting piece of WWII history, but I was disappointed in the book itself. It seemed to skip over some key aspects of the initial Japanese invasion of the Aleutian Islands. The stories of the different people didn‘t make the impact I expected and felt somewhat disjointed. It may be even harder for young readers without any prior knowledge to follow the course of events.

This summer I had the opportunity to visit the Alaska Aviation Museum in Anchorage, and it includes an exhibit about the Japanese invasion of the Aleutian Islands during WWII. As I walked through it I realized I‘ve had this book in my class library shelf for a few years and never read it myself. I started it today during our seminar reading time.

Pickpick

This was an enjoyable reread of a book I haven‘t read in several years. The idea of running away and hiding in a museum is a fun one, and there‘s a bit of a mystery for Claudia and Jamie to investigate as well.

It‘s also been a while since I spent a quiet Friday night with a book and cup of tea, and it was very much appreciated.

Sarahreadstoomuch One of my favorites growing up! 2w
mabell I love this book! The planning and independence of the whole scheme was so thrilling to me! I‘ve reread it as an adult, but it has been quite a few years. Loved the description of the Automat, too! 2w
Daisey @Sarahreadstoomuch @mabell I was so entertained reading it again. I loved their planning, and I was amused when they didn‘t even realize they were in the newspapers as if their parents wouldn‘t be looking for them. 1w

Sarahreadstoomuch @tpixie those links are amazing! I haven‘t been to the Met since I was a kid…. A return trip may be in order (after I reread this book once again!) thank you for sharing 1w
tpixie @Sarahreadstoomuch I‘m going to NYC Next year with my sister. I‘m having her read a couple novels on the Frick museum and the Morgan Library. We may need to read this book and go to the Met! 1w

Texreader Love the read a book display! What grade? 3mo
Daisey @Texreader My library is geared toward middle school/junior high since I taught English for several years, but now I teach junior high and high school math. 3mo
Texreader @Daisey I love that you‘re teaching math and still have reading recommendations! 🎉 3mo
Sace I love setting up my classroom. I need to take a page from your book and recommend books to my high school students. 3mo
Daisey @Sace It always takes me a get to get started, but then it really helps me feel ready for a new year. I‘ve found this little bulletin board display where I set out a few books each month from a different genre or relating to a specific topic works well for making some different books visible to students. 3mo
Daisey @Texreader Last year was tough because it was the switch to all math, but getting books off my shelf (a collection of my own books I‘ve built over years so they didn‘t just go to another teacher) and into their hands is still really important to me. 3mo

Butterfinger What a great idea. 9mo
Daisey @Butterfinger Thanks! Since I switched to teaching all math, I miss talking books as much, so I‘ve been changing this out monthly with books on different topics. 9mo
Butterfinger After teaching science for several years, I am back teaching ELA and Social Studies. I hope I can continue till I retire in 3 years. 9mo

A couple of these might be a bit more #YA than #MiddleGrade, and I‘m not sure they all have ghosts, but this seemed as good a time as any to share my October recommendation shelf.

The tagged is my favorite spooky read to recommend. For a long time the reader doesn‘t know if it‘s a ghost story or if the main character is hallucinating.

Fourmile | Watt Key

The #MiddleGradeMonday prompt this week was to share books with a number in the title. I completely forgot to check my shelf then, but today I found these.

I tagged Fourmile as it and other books by Watt Key are often well liked by some of my more reluctant readers and also not as well known as I think they should be.

This year I switched from teaching JH English & Math to JH & HS math, but I‘ve kept my class library as most of the books are mine personally. So, I‘m trying something a little different to promote a few books each month on a particular topic. This was my August display as we started the new year.
