Roach's exploration of what happens to human bodies postmortem is fascinating, and often stomach churning, and definitely makes you think. The audio narration is wonderful, the casual conversational style matching with Roach's wry humour, but also showcasing the curiosity that drives her books.

One would not think a book all about cadavers could be anything but morbid and gross, but this book is entertaining and informative and funny. Mary Roach makes the subject approachable and educational. I had no idea about the many “lives” of cadavers. Includes an interesting chapter on burial/cremation/composting. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Loved this! So glad it was a MCBC pick because I‘ve been wanting to read this for a long time. It‘s a fascinating look at what some bodies can do after death and the things/procedures we have today that are because of the research and testing performed on cadavers. There were several moments where I laughed out loud and Mary‘s humor really shines through in places. I‘ll be picking up more from her. #MCBC

This was both delightful and disturbing. I enjoyed a lot of it, but some of the experimentation especially head transplants with monkeys and dogs was truly awful. I wish I‘d been able to skip those sections, but that‘s challenging with an audiobook.

I read this a few years ago for #AuthorAMonth. It‘s informative and clever - Roach is one-of-a-kind

This is a hilarious exploration of the strange lives of our bodies postmortem. I do not care what happens to me, blow me up, dissect, experiment, learn or plasticized me. A good read.

Author Mary Roach does a deep dive into the “careers” of human and animal cadavers. Ranging from the obvious medical anatomy cadavers for education to crash testing cars and planes for safety to organ and tissue donation, Roach really went out of her way to find both modern and medieval knowledge on how societies have used the bodies of the dead to help the living. Roach writes with an edge of humor to soften the blow of a couple of topics here.

Weird subject for sure but certainly interesting. I liked learning about different ways cadavers are used and have been used in the past. It was shocking at times but always interesting. I would like to read other books by the author now.

I borrowed this from a coworker. I really enjoyed the first half of the book. Learning about the way we use deceased bodies for medical research was fascinating. The last half of the book was not so interesting to me. Maybe I was just tired of reading about death, who knows. I did not like the chapter on medical experimentation with animals, trying to determine how long the head could live without a body.

If you are morbidly curious or interested in all the things that could happen to your body after death (from decomposition itself, to cremation and composting!) this is an excellent read. I‘m sure there are many more things the body could undergo after death since this was written, but no one could tell you it like Mary Roach!

Entertaining AND informative!

I‘m not sure what it says about me when I say enjoyed a book about death. The author made this highly unlikable subject easy to read and provided some real insight into your corporeal options. It also knocked off another color, #Amazon , for #Pantone2022.

What an interesting book! Mary Roach writes with wit and humor about a subject that most would find witless and humorless. Very informative as well!

Not for the squeamish. At once somehow reverent in its content and still containing a flippant writing style. A good range of content, including the historical treatment of cadavers up to modern use. Roach does a fantastic job thoroughly investigating. She takes you right in to the nitty gritty. For me, it was a very educational experience while still being delivered in a way that kept me entertained. Best for those with a little dark humor.

The use of human cadavers to further knowledge and science, and to improve vehicle safety for example is a very interesting subject. Unfortunately, this book is all over the place, it resembles a trivia book, a list of "fun" facts, staying mostly on the superficial layer of things. And Mary Roach's humor is juvenile at best... I was quite disappointed ?

I did find this book interesting.
For me, it was just enough science, without being scientific, so it was a light read. I pretty much cringed through most of the book with a slightly digusted face on because decomposing bodies, and bodies parts are gross to me though.

Interesting book to finish up on Christmas Eve 😏😂

I had been thinking about my days back in veterinary anatomy class, so it was interesting read about all the uses for human cadavers (and some funeral practices). The part about head transplants freaked me out a bit, but otherwise she struck her usual balance between humor and information. She was a respectful when it was needed, which I appreciated. Not my favorite Mary, but a good read!

Not my usual cup of tea despite how much I love true crime but my girlfriend takes it to the next level so I told her I‘d give it a go. Surprisingly interesting! And connects some dots for when you‘re sitting there going “how do they know that???”

I listened to this ( it was available while I waited for holds to come in) it is darkly informative and perfect for October. I had no idea some of the ways donated bodies are used, or that cannibalism is still a thing. MR has a very curious mind and a really engaging way of writing ( be careful eating during some of this if you are listening 🤢)

Feels like a good time of year for this one.

I knew this about her already but Mary Roach is a very visceral writer. I grimaced so hard through the first few chapters of this cadaveriffic book that I‘m a little worried about wrinkles. 😂 But I settled in.

I learned some things I won‘t soon forget: namely, the definition of “mellified man” & the intricate & bizarre details of a successful, real-life head transplant (performed in the 70s)! And, because it‘s Mary Roach, of course I laughed. 💕

My first finish for #20in4. Also, my first Mary Roach book. This was an interesting look at what happens to bodies after death. Although it could have been completely gruesome, Roach presented the information in a unique and sometimes humorous manner. I‘ll definitely try another of her books.

Hmmm didn't expect the cadaver & food chapter "eat me" when I warmed up lunch but it is what it is. ?

I adore Mary Roach one of the best general nonfiction writers out there.
Selfish Shallow and Self Absorbed & Spinster books made for me it is so nice to have books that show you are not the only wierdo out there who does not want children or to live in a traditional relationship.
Stamped is the most important book here. Required reading for everyone.

We are taking a day off from moving so I‘m on a reading ROLL since this will probably be my last dedicated reading day for the month. I finally finished this #lmpbc pick, which was just as fascinating on my second read as it was for my first in high school! And I‘m even more committed to organ donation as I was before! @iread2much I‘ll get this in the mail as soon as I can!

This is an hilarious exploration of the strange lives of our bodies postmortem. Roach combines scientific information and makes funny comments to make the info go down easier. I read this with a group of Litsy friends who made comments throughout. It was interesting to see what others thought about the book. I look forward to reading another of her books and would recommend this book to those who love science.
