I love the writing style of Lisa Jewel and love going into thrillers and mysteries not knowing much about the story. I‘ve heard mixed reviews. Any thoughts?

Laughterhp Don‘t think of this as a thriller and you won‘t be disappointed. It‘s just mystery, not thriller. 4d

Happy Friday!

1. I only speak one language - English!

2. 2020 is kind of a bust so far, but The Family Upstairs was my first solid read last month.

3. I had pepperoni pizza so two colors.

4. ❤️ 🙄 🙃

5. Spreading love always!

A strange cult-ish story that was so well written, it was believable. Excellent character development, too.

Enjoyable read. I liked the way the story unfolded and you discovered sometimes contradictory bits of the tale through different characters. The idea of a once wealthy family being reduced to almost nothing was oddly plausible.

A solid thriller told from three different points of view.

Libby, was a baby, found years ago, amongst a tragic crime. Now at 25, she is given a house and inheritance.

But Libby is determined to find out more about her past.

Hard to summarize because SO much happens in this one. Fans of Flowers in the Attic are sure to appreciate it.

Takes a few chapters to get into, but the second half really picked up the pace.

Andrew65 Love Lisa Jewell books. 1mo
NomiReads Ooooh Flowers in the Attic! I remember being so creeped out by those books. I will have to check out Lisa Jewell, I see her books all the time at the library but haven‘t ever tried one. 1mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️I really enjoyed this book, and read it in 24 hours. Told from the perspective of three characters - focusing on the baby who was discovered in the house with three dead bodies, plenary of twists and turns.

Lisa Jewell's The Family Upstairs is a brilliant suspense novel. I listened to this one on audio, via @scribd, and a trio of narrators--Tamaryn Payne, Bea Holland, Dominic Thorburn--vividly portray the alternating perspectives of three characters who are connected in some way. This one is difficult to talk about without spoilers, but the twists are satisfying, and though I predicted some plot elements, I was surprised at several points. ⬇️

UnabridgedPod What really makes this one worth reading is the character development. Henry narrates the past, when he was ten years old and his parents invited first a couple and then a family to live with them. Libby's third of the book focuses on the year she turns twenty five, when she learns that she has inherited a house from her birth parents who died when she was an infant. ⬇️ 2mo
UnabridgedPod The last narrator is Lucy, a single mother with two young children who is desperate to return to England. Each character's story develops with empathy and drama as the layers of the overarching narrative peel back.

This is my second book by Lisa Jewell--I also enjoyed Then She Was Gone--and I'm eager to read more! Have you read The Family Upstairs? What suspense thrillers would you recommend along these lines?

Wow, what a great !&@$&! book! I just started this today and I had to finish it. Got absolutely nothing done today, oh well! 🤷🏻‍♀️

The chapters alternate between three different POV‘s but I found it easy to keep straight. It‘s dark and twisty and will keep you guessing until the end. 5⭐️

This is a solid mystery/thriller with some interesting twists and turns. Some were fairly predictable but it was enjoyable. The ending was abrupt, but I kind of liked that about it. While fun, the book is mostly a popcorn novel; not too deep or lasting. Plus a great deal was very obviously inspired by We Have Always Lived in a Castle. In some ways too much was similar, but, still a fun story overall. #BotM

5 out of 5! It‘s a dark and twisted story told from three narrators in three timelines. The darkness builds and characters become mad, power hungry, broken and you question what‘s real and what‘s true. Who is evil? Who is the victim? Who will hold the power in the end? What is the biggest tragedy? A great plot that is intricate and twisted until the very end. It‘s dark and heavy and i was emotionally spent when it ended which left me satisfied.

My current listen 🎧 - I‘m always in the mood for a suspenseful thriller this time of year, and so far, ‘The Family Upstairs‘ by Lisa Jewell does not disappoint! It‘s one of those books that hook from the very first, (dare I mention a disturbing and chilling letter in the first few pages), multiple POV‘s and excellent voice talent for the three narratives. I‘m hooked!

Freespirit I shall look out for this one to listen to😍 3mo

For me, this was very up and down, in terms of how much I was into it. But the last quarter of the book made it worth it. I was super curious as to what the heck was going on, so that kept me going. And I‘m glad I did because once some truths were revealed... 😮.

This audiobook is great fun. The three narrators are all excellent, which is a relief. I tend to stay away from audiobooks that alternate narrators because there is usually one that annoys me. The mystery of a posh house and the family that lived there is well plotted and the characters are well developed. I listened to most of it while shoveling snow, and the story made the work enjoyable.

Twainy Oooo! This was a November BOTM choice for me! I really want to pick it up but I‘ve got 8 more weeks wait on my OverDrive audiobook hold list. A lot of the time I will pick up the book/Paperwhite to supplement the audio but hearing the audio is great ... well I‘ll impatiently wait. 😁 Thank you! 3mo

The characters are highly highly developed and rich in detail. Told through multiple perspectives, this compelling and twisty narrative is executed masterfully. Jewell has a knack for creating suspense that is both compelling and sublimely atmospheric.

Disturbing at times, gripping, and often quirky, The Family Upstairs is one of my favourite books this year.
