(Excerpt from my review on Goodreads)
I‘m a little sad... I think maybe Morgenstern was just too ambitious with this one, and it got away from her. Too many threads just wound up in a tangled, inexplicable mess. She can write like nobody‘s business, and I hope she writes another book (and that we don‘t have to wait another eight years!), and I will again read whatever she writes. But this one will not rank among my favorites.
Well. I was keeping track of my reading time for #24b42020 but then somehow the timer on my phone got turned on inside my purse when I was out running errands and logged a bunch of extra non reading hours. 🤦🏼♀️ I think I had about 3.5 before the timer fiasco. So I guess I'll just start over with the tracker & see what happens. My goal is to finish this one before the end of the year!
I often read reviews and then discard them if they‘re negative; “Aw, they just don‘t truly love ‘X‘ or they‘re too picky.” I should‘ve listened to them for this. I could not follow this book. I‘m all for plot twists. I‘m even here for not understanding a book up until the last chapter, but I finished this one, and I still don‘t fully understand everything. I wanted to love it- it had so many wonderful elements- but it was just too confusing.
Friends. I don't know what happened to the weekend but my grand plans for #11thhourreadathon turned into parties w/friends & the Nutcracker ballet w/my niece. Nice things but I only read like 2 hours. 🙈 Anyway, my #bookreport is late too, but here it is: I am sad to say I bailed on the Water Dancer--it was me not the book. I wanted to read Starless Sea more, so that's what I'm doing. Loving it & should be able to finish this week. #weeklyreport
My first few hours of the #11thhourreadathon were a bust. I read 18 minutes and promptly fell asleep. I needed it though and I have coffee now! It's raining outside, I've got nothing to do today but this.
Happy Friday book friends! How was everyone's week? I did a lot of good writing, went on a rare December bike ride, and started crocheting this scarf as a birthday present for a friend. I'm doing an overnight sleep study tonight--trying to figure out why I'm constantly tossing and turning and getting in general terrible sleep. It's weird not being at home but at least I have this magical book to help me drift off to dreamland.
“He takes a book from one of the shelves, recalling a story that was probably a Twilight Zone episode: so much to read and no eyeglasses.
He flips the book open to a random page anyway and the printed words are crisp and clear. ”
Always love a reference to Time Enough at Last. How many bookworms have been traumatized by that final scene??
You know when you have a crazy dream where the people and the settings are constantly changing and its hard to make sense of anything and when you wake up you say “what in the hell was that?”....this book was like that for me.
This may have been a case of my expectations being too high (as I LOVE The Night Circus) combined with long stretches of not reading due to life things...so perhaps this warrants another read to fully appreciate it?
Why I loved this book “the son of the fortune teller rows a boat across an ocean made of paper”. Of course he did, only in the fairy tale magic of Morgenstern. I did not understand it all but the delightful details helped me conjure rich visuals, I felt like I was there. I will read this again (or listen perhaps?) when I have more headroom, as in not before the holidays. 🐝 🗡 🔑
To finish or not to finish...that is the question. I‘m not sure this time of year, when my mind is racing with a “to do” list, is right for me and this book. 🤔
This is gonna be an unpopular opinion but I didn't like this. This is the first book of hers that I've read & she is a wonderful writer. There is no doubt that she has a beautiful way with words; and I love a well-turned phrase but I also like substance with my beauty. I got to the halfway point in this & I still didn't know what the point of the story was. There were lots of clever little stories but I had no investment in the characters.
A book about doorways and magical dreamy places. This one's fantasy world is filled with books, perfect drinks, cats, and so many stories layered upon each other. If books were desserts this one would be baklava. Delicious!
A beautiful, magical story for those who tested the backs of wardrobes, peered down rabbit holes, and searched for hidden train platforms in hopes of finding passage to a magical land.

1. Inspired by @Eggs and made a bookface ?
2. "A sleeve could catch on the top of a castle, sending a princess tumbling to the ground below." from tagged (amazing) book
3. Chilly and clear 55* F evening at the moment.
My newest snuggly reading buddy (and me trying hard not to drop the almost 500 pg book on her).
"A sleeve could catch on the top of a castle, sending a princess tumbling to the ground below."
4°C, grey, melty. Very November.
Listening to this on audio, fabulous by the way, and I hear what is supposed to be a New Orleans accent. Why do movies, tv shows, and audiobooks depict people from New Orleans and even Louisiana in general as having a heavy southern accent and sounding like a Georgia bell? We don‘t! It irritates me to no end. Do your research!
It is suddenly freezing in Toronto with a lot of snow, so I couldn‘t have come across this passage at a more perfect time.
“The weather. It‘s like a poem. Where each word is more than one thing at once and everything‘s a metaphor. The meaning condensed into rhythm and sound and the spaces between sentences. It‘s all intense and sharp like the cold and the wind.”
Here's a free download for Starless Sea. Hope the link works.
Happy Pub Day!!!! So excited for this one to be on shelves.
Such a beautiful, atmospheric book. I love the world Morgenstern created and enjoyed the book—however, sometimes as I was reading along, I would find myself completely lost. Perhaps that‘s how the characters felt too. I think people who loved The Night Circus will probably love this too.
Happiest early birthday to me! A day early on their release and I know my birthday isn‘t till Thursday but this is the absolute best way to start celebrating especially after the day I had 🖤 I hope there is something that brings you joy this Monday 🖤
