The Bookish Life of Nina Hill
The Bookish Life of Nina Hill | Abbi Waxman
100 posts | 77 read | 9 reading | 199 to read
“Abbi Waxman is both irreverent and thoughtful.”—#1 New York Times bestselling author Emily Giffin The author of Other People’s Houses and The Garden of Small Beginnings delivers a quirky and charming novel chronicling the life of confirmed introvert Nina Hill as she does her best to fly under everyone's radar. Meet Nina Hill: A young woman supremely confident in her own...shell. The only child of a single mother, Nina has her life just as she wants it: a job in a bookstore, a kick-butt trivia team, a world-class planner and a cat named Phil. If she sometimes suspects there might be more to life than reading, she just shrugs and picks up a new book. When the father Nina never knew existed suddenly dies, leaving behind innumerable sisters, brothers, nieces, and nephews, Nina is horrified. They all live close by! They're all—or mostly all—excited to meet her! She'll have to Speak. To. Strangers. It's a disaster! And as if that wasn't enough, Tom, her trivia nemesis, has turned out to be cute, funny, and deeply interested in getting to know her. Doesn't he realize what a terrible idea that is? Nina considers her options. 1. Completely change her name and appearance. (Too drastic, plus she likes her hair.) 2. Flee to a deserted island. (Hard pass, see: coffee). 3. Hide in a corner of her apartment and rock back and forth. (Already doing it.) It's time for Nina to come out of her comfortable shell, but she isn't convinced real life could ever live up to fiction. It's going to take a brand-new family, a persistent suitor, and the combined effects of ice cream and trivia to make her turn her own fresh page.

I loved this one so much. A very cute story about a bookish and anxious woman adjusting to more while finding her place. The dialogue was awesome and the book had a lot of great humor.

This was a very light and fun read. Nina is very relatable, and stones got plenty of drama without it getting too heavy. Overall a good time. The style was a tad too cutesy for me, but I can see why other people loved it. This is definitely a book meant for Littens!

KatieDid927 Totes cutesy and a little cheesetacular at times but still really fun. 3d
j9brown @KatieDid927 Exactly, perfect for some lazy loafing in the park. Read a little, nap a little, talk to squirrel, read some more 😁 3d

3.5 ⭐ / 5. This was mostly fun and sweet but the writing style didn't always work for me and the storyline with Nina's boss annoyed me.
I didn't totally love it - I think it was maybe too whimsical or cutesy for me. But it was a nice distraction from real life this week.

This was a charming read, but a little underwhelming. All the characters are literate, clever, & talk just like Amy Sherman-Palladino characters. Reading about Nina navigating her charming new family, dealing with her charming romantic troubles, & fixing her charming employment problems was fun & relaxing, like spending the day at the Santa Monica Pier. I enjoyed reading & was always happy to pick it up, but I'm not sure it will stick with me.

I think Nina is the closest fictional character, that I have found, that feels like me. I tend to put my foot in my mouth, enjoy working surrounded by books, oddly sarcastic and full of odd facts. Her odd paternal family and substories were fun and they reminded me of Joe Fox's family in You've Got Mail. I enjoyed the romance between Tom and Nina but feel they rushed to bed quicker than needed based on how little then know each other.

CoffeeAndABook About Tom & Nina - that‘s exactly how I felt! I could feel their initial attraction to each other but everything after that felt rushed & detached at the same time. I wasn‘t feeling it at all. Apart from that, the book was bliss. 💫 6d

Sassiekat @marleed Thanks so much for tagging me about Katherine Centre's book and Abbi Waxman book. I went to the library to see if they had them (though I have 1000+ of my own books to read, I still love the library) but they didn't... however I did reserve them for when they're available. I thoroughly enjoyed this feel-good book. Books, bookstores, lists, and likable characters. As the reader there is never a question about the ultimate fate of the bookstore and that‘s fine - Hallmark movie fine. ... I‘m also binging 3 seasons of a Handmade‘s Tale in just less than a week so my head really needs some books with Hallmark endings right now!

I really liked this book a lot and give it 4 stars. It was quirky and fun! I related to Nina a lot and she was goals for a lot of things - her planner, her bookstore job, her bookshelves, her big comfy chair and cat. Her life and story felt like home to me. The only thing this was missing to give it 5 stars was an emotional connection. I would recommend it to any bookworm for a fun easy relatable book!!

This book had so many gems in it! I related to Nina so much. I really appreciated the anxiety plot line. However, it was sloppy and messy and I would have probably really disliked this book if it wasn‘t about a woman who loved books and worked in a bookstore.

I was waffling on how to rate this in ⭐ (something I like about Litsy is lack of ⭐), when I reviewed the 8 (!) quotes I tagged and transcribed while reading with my ears. That's a pretty good sign for fiction—quotes I don't want to forget because they charmed me, made me laugh, made me think, or whatever. (I tend to do lots of tagging in nonfiction.)

So, I'm a fan. I felt kinship with several characters, and reading this made me generally happy.
