Simple Favor [movie Tie-In]
Simple Favor [movie Tie-In] | Darcey Bell
Soon to be a major motion picture from Lionsgate starring Anna Kendrick, Blake Lively and Henry Golding, and directed by Paul Feig"Riveting and brilliantly structured, A Simple Favor is an edge-of-your seat domestic thriller about a missing wife and mother that relies on a rotating cast of unreliable narrators to ingeniously examine the cost of competitive mom-friends, the toll of ordinary marital discontent and the fallacy of the picture-perfect, suburban family."--Kimberly McCreight, New York Times bestselling authorShe's your best friend. She knows all your secrets. That's why she's so dangerous.A single mother's life is turned upside down when her best friend vanishes in this chilling debut thriller in the vein of Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train. It starts with a simple favor--an ordinary kindness mothers do for one another. When her best friend, Emily, asks Stephanie to pick up her son Nicky after school, she happily says yes. Nicky and her son, Miles, are classmates and best friends, and the five-year-olds love being together--just like she and Emily. A widow and stay-at-home mommy blogger living in woodsy suburban Connecticut, Stephanie was lonely until she met Emily, a sophisticated PR executive whose job in Manhattan demands so much of her time. But Emily doesn't come back. She doesn't answer calls or return texts. Stephanie knows something is terribly wrong--Emily would never leave Nicky, no matter what the police say. Terrified, she reaches out to her blog readers for help. She also reaches out to Emily's husband, the handsome, reticent Sean, offering emotional support. It's the least she can do for her best friend. Then, she and Sean receive shocking news. Emily is dead. The nightmare of her disappearance is over.Or is it? Because soon, Stephanie will begin to see that nothing--not friendship, love, or even an ordinary favor--is as simple as it seems. A Simple Favor is a remarkable tale of psychological suspense--a clever and twisting free-fall of a ride filled with betrayals and reversals, twists and turns, secrets and revelations, love and loyalty, murder and revenge. Darcey Bell masterfully ratchets up the tension in a taut, unsettling, and completely absorbing story that holds you in its grip until the final page.

So I started and finished this book today. It kept my interest but I was disappointed in the ending. But it's off my TBR shelf, time to move onto something else.... I will probably watch the movie just to see how it compares....

lele1432 I had similar feelings about the book. I liked the movie! The ending was still a bit ridiculous, but in a humorous way. 2mo
Djspens @lele1432 yeah I feel like the movie might be as good as the book in this case, and I'm a fan of Anna Kendrick 🤷‍♀️ 2mo
lele1432 She was perfect as Stephanie! 2mo
Djspens @lele1432 ok the movie was definitely better than the book lol and it was only 2 hours wasted on a silly story, rather than the whole day it took me to get through the book! 😂 2mo
lele1432 Hahaha yessss I thought it translated much better on screen and made for quick, silly entertainment. 😂 2mo

Finished my planned audio read for #24b4monday yesterday but still had a bunch of painting to do so started this and got sucked right in. A bit predictable, if you are a fan of these “Gone Girl” type thrillers but predictable can be quite enjoyable sometimes.

A twisted domestic suspense novel that I enjoyed for the first 3rd, despite some juicy, yet unpalatable plot points, but it ended up devolving into a repetitive & disappointing work with quite a few noticeable plot holes. Stephanie changed from a neurotic mommy blogger with ugly secrets to a bumbling, people-pleasing idiot, & I found Emily's motives & control over people unbelievable. I still really want to see the movie! 2.5⭐️s

ElizaMarie I really enjoyed the movie. It was aesthetically pleasing 3mo

I‘m torn- the first half was sufficiently twisty, even if I figured there was some shenanigans (what good murder mystery doesn‘t have SOME shenanigans?)- but the ending felt so flat that I was disappointed. I had an audio book version, so it was at least it passed by quickly and enjoyably.

Normally I‘m all for getting a book with the original cover, but the color scheme on this is so aesthetically pleasing. Also, I‘m trying really hard not to flip through to the end because I‘m SO curious about what‘s going to happen! #asimplefavor #fiction #suspense

A #twofer post to get me caught up.
There is a #BizarreLoveTriangle in this book when widowed mommy blogger Stephanie makes a new friend Emily & then falls for Emily‘s husband Sean after she goes missing. (There‘s also another crazy ick-ish triangle from Stephanie‘s past too.) All three characters do things in this book that are more than #GroundsForDivorce 🖤 I liked the movie much more than the book due to the casting/acting.

So happy to be at the beach and in less than 24 hours I‘ve already read one book. My mom loaned me this one a few months ago and I felt it would be a great beach read. It definitely was! It was a page turner and kept me guessing. There was a lot going on and the writing wasn‘t the best, but since I didn‘t want to put it down and it kept me guessing, I am giving it 4 ⭐️‘s.

I put this book aside several times and finally finished it today because I rarely DNF. I‘m fine reading books with flawed characters that you don‘t necessarily root for, so this wasn‘t the reason I couldn‘t get invested in this book. Overall the plot was just not that interesting to me and this is a book I‘m happy to shelve.

The book is NOT a pick from me... I only said so-so based on the unlikable characters and (unnecessary) twists left and right.

However..,

I love Anna Kendrick, and she definitely made Stephanie more bearable. Blake Lively was hilarious and much funnier than in the book. They shined in these roles.

The movie was different from the book, and I actually liked the ending better!

Anyone else read and see the movie?

SilversReviews I read the book. The one who asked for the favor definitely is very unlikable. 4mo

I saw the movie trailer (but not the movie) before reading the book, and let me tell you, I totally did not expect the book to go the way it did. That being said, I really enjoyed it. It‘s not the kind of book I normal read, but I was pulled right in and finished it in a single sitting. All the little reveals made it feel like I was becoming best friends with the characters as they slowly divulged all their secrets.

This one fell pretty flat for me guys. I did read the book in about 3 days, but I didn‘t care at all for the characters (except maybe the husbands believe it or not ). The writing was just not good and the plot development felt forced. Both of these women are awful and not in a deliciously fun devilish kinda way 🙄. I am gonna check out the movie to see if it‘s the rare time it‘s better than the book.

Stephanie is Emily‘s best friend so when Emily asks Stephanie to pick up her son after school, of course she helps her out. Now Emily is missing and Stephanie is working with Sean, Emily‘s husband, to find out where she could be.

When a dead body is found matching Emily‘s DNA, wearing her ring, Stephanie and her son move in with Sean to help out.

But what if... Emily‘s back?

Today‘s Prompt: BELIEVE

Review Here: https://bit.ly/2urk5oI

A SIMPLE FAVOR is an excellent psychological thriller that kept me guessing and wondering what really was going on in the lives of the characters.

The characters were authentic, but it was difficult to “believe” someone could act that way and think of ways to hurt others.

Banale. Orrendo

Well, I really liked the movie, but the book was so different!! Emily was a much more devious character but then so were Stephanie and Sean too! It was an uncomfortable read at times, I think I‘m not used to seeing the bad guy‘s motives laid out so clearly, and did she even have a motive really? Other than being a bad person and restless? I think this was a ‘pick‘ not a ‘PICK‘ for me.

I read this before watching the movie... and for once, I have to say that I liked the movie better. The book felt too much like someone who wanted to put a new spin on "Gone Girl." I know they say there is no such thing as a truly original idea anymore, but something about the book just irked me. I did read it all in one sitting, and it was gripping, but there were way too many things that felt incredibly "off."

I don't understand all the hate that this book gets on Litsy, I actually enjoyed it. I did find the characters a bit unlikable, but the story held my interest more than other books with unlikable characters.

I am, however, now confused by the movie, since there were random things in it that weren't in the book that made the story more outlandish.

Calling it a night. I'm actually enjoying this book more than I thought I would based on the Litsy reviews and the fact that I've seen the movie.
