Mehso-so

When Captain Trevelyan rents his remote house to an outsider for the winter & takes a house in town, his nearest neighbours in the small village of Sittaford are perplexed. The new temporary tenants, a woman & her daughter, are pleasant enough & they often extend invitations to visit. One evening, the women & four visitors decide to hold a séance, but things take a turn when a message comes through purporting to be from Trevelyan himself. (Cont'd)

OutsmartYourShelf He says he is dead & that it was murder. Although saying he thinks it is all rubbish, his closest friend, Major Burnaby, cannot rest until he knows the truth, so sets off walking through a snowstorm for 6 miles to check on Trevelyan. Alas, he is dead & the fact that his estranged nephew was in the local town of Exhampton raises suspicions.

The police inspector on the case is Inspector Narracott but he takes second place to the fiancée of
4mo
OutsmartYourShelf Trevelyan's nephew, James Pearson, who takes it upon herself to investigate. I found her rather annoying to be honest - all that fake “Oh you are so clever“ attitude to the men involved in the case became a bit repetitive after the first half dozen times. I also thought it was one of the easier Christie plots to work out. Overall, not the author's best work as it was rather dull. 3⭐

As I heard that the movie is a kind of a mix of both the tagged book and Hallowe'en Party, I'm trying to read them both before seeing the movie in order to do a proper comparison.
I'm a bit sceptical about this specific movie adaptation... we're gonna see 🤷🏻‍♀️

There is a a seance and the death of Captain Trevelyan is predicted, and when Major Burnaby checks on his old friend - he is dead. The detective in this one is officially Narracott but Emily is the amateur sleuth and the one who solves the case. The reveal - who and why and how solved - seemed a bit weak - but overall a good read.

From tagged book, page 235: “It was half past three, and, with his head spinning from the effects of Mrs. Curtis's conversation, Mr. Enderby went out for a stroll.“

This was a great winter offering from the queen of mystery. It was incredibly witty, and kept me guessing the whole way through. As usual a few comments from the period had me really cringing, but my discomfort was more than made up for by several of the the female characters in this one who were so fabulously sharp and tenacious. I just wanted to spend as much time with those ladies as possible, especially when they got together to hang out.

RedCurly I loved that too! 1y

My last several Christie books have only been okay and were basically saved by the narrator (often Hugh Fraser.) This one, however, was really good, with fun characters and an interesting mystery. I figured out the murderer but thought I had to be wrong because there seemed to be no way for this person to have done it. Emily — our heroine- is fantastic. The book didn‘t need Poirot or Miss Marple. #audiowalk

Agatha Christie‘s The Sittaford Mystery is my new walking book. No Poirot, no Miss Marple, but so far I‘m liking it. Hugh Fraser narrates, and he‘s always great. The top left pic is the fern garden in the botanical gardens; that‘s the clearest I‘ve ever seen that path. #audiowalk

KathyWheeler @Texreader It is. They‘re planting a new garden near this fern garden but there‘s nothing about what‘s going to be there. I can‘t wait to find out. The large herb garden they have is getting refreshed too. 😊 2y

This snowy story was difficult to get into in the summer heat, especially listening to part of it while driving through the desert, but despite the incongruity of the setting, I really enjoyed this one in much the way I enjoy all the Christie mysteries that I enjoy. I enjoy the cute twists and turns, and I always love a lady detective.

I always consider it a win when I find a Christie that I don‘t remember reading!

Poirot and Miss Marple are fabulous, but my favorite Christies tend to be the standalones like Secret at Chimneys, The Man in the Brown Suit, and now the Sittaford Mystery aka Mystery at Hazelmoor. The setting is wonderful, the characters are terrific, and there‘s a strong heroine to pull it all together. Highly recommended!

4. This book is something of an homage to Arthur Conan Doyle's The House of the Baskervilles. What similarities can you find between the two?

#agathachristieclubR2

janeycanuck Really? I don‘t really see it but I hardly remember Baskervilles. 3y
TheAromaofBooks I've never actually read Baskervilles!! I'd be interested to know what the similarities are... I remember watching the Wishbone episode! 😂 @janeycanuck 3y
ferskner @janeycanuck @TheAromaofBooks hahaha well this question didn't work so well! I see it in the setting, which I think is the same part of the country? And the supernatural element kind of hanging over everything. Oh according to Wikipedia there are escaped convicts from Dartmoor Prison in both. 3y
Laughterhp @ferskner @janeycanuck @TheAromaofBooks I didn‘t realize it was an homage to Baskerville. I don‘t think I‘ve read that one, but I did see the episode of Sherlock where they did that story. 3y

3. Christie has given us another plucky heroine. What did you think of Emily Trefusis and her mystery-solving skills? Why do you think she decides to stay with James Pearson? What do you think she's should have done?

#agathachristieclubR2

janeycanuck I thought she was hilarious. I was a bit surprised she stayed with James but she young & in love - she probably thinks she can change him! And maybe he did just make a bad decision and he can keep on the straight and narrow going forward! 3y
TheAromaofBooks I really liked Emily a lot & I kind of liked the way Christie wrote her as a character who has every intention of keeping her man on the straight & narrow in the future 😂 @janeycanuck 3y
janeycanuck @TheAromaofBooks If anyone can, it‘s Emily! 🤪 3y
See All 6 Comments
ferskner @janeycanuck @TheAromaofBooks she was such a good time! I was a little bummed that she didn't ditch both dudes. She was better than both of them and should have been out having adventures, but if we can't have that I loved that she bucked convention and stuck with her guy. The expected thing was that she'd fall in love with the reporter, so it was satisfying to see her remain her own person. 3y
TheAromaofBooks I also appreciated her loyalty to him - like she knows exactly what kind of person he is when she agrees to marry him, and she sticks with him through it all, and I like that. @ferskner @janeycanuck 3y
Laughterhp @TheAromaofBooks Yes, I was surprised she stuck with him, but I wasn‘t disappointed. I agree she was loyal and knew what kind of person he was. 3y

2. Please comment on the solution. Did you find Christie's ending credible or satisfying?

#agathachristieclubR2

janeycanuck I found it satisfying. It‘s always fun when it‘s something strange like that. 3y
TheAromaofBooks I had read this one before & actually remembered how/whodunit, but I remember the first time I read it being quite impressed with an ending that is crazy yet believable. @janeycanuck 3y
janeycanuck @TheAromaofBooks I enjoy these “locked room” type mysteries more and more each time I encounter them. (edited) 3y
See All 8 Comments
TheAromaofBooks @janeycanuck - Me, too! And I feel like overall Christie plays fair with this one - the solution is there if you can put the pieces together right (I never do haha) 3y
ferskner @janeycanuck @TheAromaofBooks yes this one is definitely fair! I loved that the money-troubles clue is given so off-handedly but it's the point everything hinges on. Christie is SO GOOD at that!!!! Like it blows my mind every time. 3y
ferskner @TheAromaofBooks @janeycanuck I did find it kind of hilarious though that Burnaby outs the murder in a seance...why do these murderers always have to draw unnecessary attention to their crimes?! 🤣 3y
TheAromaofBooks @ferskner - It does also feel like the weak point to the murder - I mean I guess he takes advantage of the opportunity to create an alibi?? But what if there hadn't been a seance at all - would he still have done the murder?? @janeycanuck 3y
Laughterhp @TheAromaofBooks I‘m sure he would have found another way to have an alibi. But I feel like he might have been fine if he didn‘t call attention to it 🤷🏻‍♀️ like no one would have noticed him dead for longer, so less clues. 3y

TheAromaofBooks I'm not always a huge fan of the stand-alone ones, but I thought this one was a lot of fun!! @janeycanuck @Laughterhp 3y
ferskner @janeycanuck @Laughterhp @TheAromaofBooks I agree, this one is really fun! I'm also not a huge standalone fan (although many of my favorite Christies are, so maybe I need to rethink that), but this one has all the elements I love: locked room, spookiness, a plucky heroine, a solid mystery. 3y

I couldn‘t recall much when I read this many years ago, so I chose to reread it for #AuthorAMonth .A perfect book to cuddle up with, if only I have a fireplace & the weather outside is not at 25°C. As it‘s a stand alone, I did miss Poirot & Miss Marple, but it isn‘t short of a good ensemble of characters, & red herrings. I enjoyed reading the atmospheric winter setting of Dartmoor. Not among Christie‘s best, I think, but still a nice cosy mystery.

A house party on a winter‘s afternoon, as the six guests assemble the snow begins to fall heavily; before long, the tiny hamlet of Sittaford, on the edge of Dartmoor, is cut off from the outside world. Inside Stifford House, the curtains are drawn and the fire burns cosily, a game of ‘table turning‘ is suggested. After giggles and false starts, the mood suddenly turns sombre as a message is spelled out, “Captain Trevelyan… Dead… Murder”.

I weighed between a so-so and a pick with this one, and the pick side won. Emily Trefusis is a great heroine and sleuth. A few dated phrases suggesting women can only function with a man are sprinkled throughout - this doesn‘t phase Emily! Not as spooky as I had hoped, but Christie kept my interest. I‘m reading chronologically as part of the #agathachristieclub , and I‘ve enjoyed seeing Christie cultivate her craft. She is truly a master!
