Don Quixote
Don Quixote: World Classics | Miguel Cervantes
Don Quixote is a Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Published in two volumes, in 1605 and 1615, Don Quixote is considered one of the most influential works of literature from the Spanish Golden Age and the entire Spanish literary canon. As a founding work of modern Western literature and one of the earliest canonical novels, it regularly appears high on lists of the greatest works of fiction ever published, such as the Bokklubben World Library collection that cites Don Quixote as authors' choice for the "best literary work ever written". It follows the adventures of a nameless hidalgo who reads so many chivalric romances that he loses his sanity and decides to set out to revive chivalry, undo wrongs, and bring justice to the world, under the name Don Quixote. He recruits a simple farmer, Sancho Panza, as his squire, who often employs a unique, earthy wit in dealing with Don Quixote's rhetorical orations on antiquated knighthood. Don Quixote, in the first part of the book, does not see the world for what it is and prefers to imagine that he is living out a knightly story. Throughout the novel, Cervantes uses such literary techniques as realism, metatheatre, and intertextuality. It had a major influence on the literary community, as evidenced by direct references in Alexandre Dumas' The Three Musketeers (1844), Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884) and Edmond Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac (1897), as well as the word "quixotic". Arthur Schopenhauercited Don Quixote as one of the four greatest novels ever written, along with Tristram Shandy, La Nouvelle Héloïse and Wilhelm Meister.

I‘ll be honest, my 3rd day with Don and I‘m tired of his antics. Thankfully only Part I is assigned.

everlocalwest This was my big summer read last year and yeah, the second book just feels unnecessary. 1w
Tamra @everlocalwest I‘ll read a summary of Part 2, thanks for the note! 1w
everlocalwest Most interesting bit is that someone wrote a second part before Cervantes could and it is referred to as 'The False Quixote.' I don't know why but this factoid pleases me. Also, that the false Quixote is the first fanfic and of course the author was big mad about it. 1w

Is often said that we have no satisfactory translation of DQ. To those who are familiar with the original, it‘s savours of truism or platitude to say so...It is not that the Spanish idioms are so utterly unmanageable, or that the untranslated words...are so superabundant, but rather that the sententious terseness to which the humor of the book owes its flavor is peculiar to Spanish, and can at best be only distantly imitated in any other tongue.

I am in the process of putting together a list of books I've read in my twenties to re-read - some I liked, some I didn't - to see what I will make of them a decade or more later. I've been re-reading books regularly of course, some of them many times (for example Anna Karenina) but I want to do this in a more planned way, to run in tandem with my lifetime reading plan. (Right now based on 1001 books / Guardian 1000 books + assorted plays).

Haroon_Ishaq How many times did u read Anna Karenina ? 4mo
merelybookish Interesting! Is there any book you expect you'll feel differently about? (I have a few books that I loved in my 20s that I would never reread, in part because I'm pretty sure they wouldn't withstand middle age scrutiny and I don't want to destroy my memory of them. 😬) 4mo
zsuzsanna_reads @merelybookish I am not sure! I wonder how well White Teeth has aged - I read it when it came out. I am mostly hoping I will like some that I didn't back then, like Tess of the d'Urbervilles. 4mo

This is a far funnier satire of knighthood and chivalry than I expected. Many jokes hold up quite well, and I giggled a couple of times. The second half is more solid and mature than the first, while still producing smiles. There was also a lot of pondering. There are, unfortunately, a bunch of things that don't hold up, given the time it was written. I'm glad I finally read it. A lot more fun than you might expect from a 400-year-old novel.

Week #7 of the #DonQuixoteBuddyRead! One more week left, @Aims42 @wanderinglynn!

CoffeeNBooks I feel like Sancho really came into his own in this section with his fake governor position. He learned a lot about himself. I thought one of the most humorous things in this section was when they were supposedly flying, blindfolded, and Sancho realized that it didn't make sense that they could hear the people speaking as if they were right there, lol! 7mo
CoffeeNBooks I was impressed with Quixote's words of wisdom for Sancho. It reminded me of Polonius' words of wisdom for Laertes in Hamlet. 7mo
Aims42 I agree!! I was surprised by Sancho‘s governing style. I thought his judgement decisions seemed fair, which wasn‘t what I anticipated. I felt for him with the “doctor” who didn‘t want him to eat anything 🤣 Poor Sancho!! 7mo

@Aims42 @wanderinglynn Can you believe we're done with Week #6 of the #DonQuixoteBuddyRead already?! I really liked this section... (continued in comments)

CoffeeNBooks I liked the story of Quiteria & Basilio, "Quiteria was fated to Basilio, and Basilio to Quiteria..." ? The whole story of the Cave of Montesinos was quite interesting! ? And all the braying, lol!!! Poor Master Pedro's puppet show, "In a word, the Knight of the Rueful Figure is he by whom I and my puppets are ruefully disfigured." 7mo
CoffeeNBooks And then Don Quixote stole the boat ???? I thought it was hilarious when he thought they'd passed the equinox, and Sancho responded with "I can see with my own eyes, that we have not moved five yards from the bank..." 7mo
Aims42 @CoffeeNBooks I snorted with laughter at the puppet scene! 🤣🤣🤣 Oh, Don Quixote!! I liked the pricing system the puppet master created. And Sancho is a riot, he is the perfect ying to DQ‘s yang ☯️ 7mo
