Monk of Mokha
Monk of Mokha | Dave Eggers
A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER "A gripping, triumphant adventure" (Los Angeles Times) from bestselling author Dave Eggers, the incredible true story of a young Yemeni American man, raised in San Francisco, who dreams of resurrecting the ancient art of Yemeni coffee but finds himself trapped in Sana'a by civil war. Mokhtar Alkhanshali is twenty-four and working as a doorman when he discovers the astonishing history of coffee and Yemen's central place in it. He leaves San Francisco and travels deep into his ancestral homeland to tour terraced farms high in the country's rugged mountains and meet beleaguered but determined farmers. But when war engulfs the country and Saudi bombs rain down, Mokhtar has to find a way out of Yemen without sacrificing his dreams or abandoning his people.

Fascinating true story of fledgling entrepreneur Mokhtar Alkhanshali who travels around Yemen searching for unique coffee beans to bring back to the US and gets caught in their civil war. #12BooksOf2021 I am sharing my almost-favorites of the year. The ones who didn‘t make my #Top21Of21 but are favorites nevertheless. One for each month. This is my choice for #February. This book came exactly at the right moment and it made me change the way I look at my career and what I want to do professionally (not actually growing coffee, but work for companies with a purpose).

I adored this book! It‘s the true and quite recent story of a Yemeni American who becomes passionate about Yemen‘s historical ties to coffee. Struggles and adventure ensue to create an ethical consumer chain for farmers in Yemen. This book provides the history of coffee, the exploitative market that controls coffee, Yemen‘s political strife, and the country‘s beauty. Mokhtar is truly an inspiring person!

The story of how Yemeni coffee was brought to the recognition of coffee connoisseurs. This book covers coffee history and some Yemeni history as well through the life of Mokhtar Alkhanshali.

This was really well written. It's non-fiction but it seems like a novel. A young Yemeni decides to bring back the glory of Yemeni coffee to the birthplace of coffee. It talks about the state of the country as well. I really liked it. Though I did sort of stop in the middle and listen to another book. Because that's how I roll, apparently.

Light pick. I enjoyed the story but some parts annoyed me. Like the fact that Mokhtar can talk his way out of every situation, people seem mesmerized by his story about coffee from Yemen. Not quite buying it. Also I thought he needlessly endangered others by refusing to leave Yemen while the US government implored their US citizens to leave while they could.
---->Continued in comments

Tineke Then he seems mad that the government doesn't help to get them out when all infrastructure is shot. Dude, they told you to leave when you could! Also there is this portrayal that he is poor, which I don't quite believe as he managed to rent an expensive apartment but also got to travel to multiple countries before he made any money from coffee. Alongside all the borrowing from friends and family. (TBR since May 4th. 2021; 327 pages) 3y

Absolutely enthralling story of an ambitious young Yemeni-American aspiring at a meaningful life and whose determination led him to overcome all obstacles and the horrors of war to accomplish his grand dream to revive the coffee industry of Yemen.
With all the hype around specialty and single origin coffee over the last 10 years, I liked to be immersed in the history and anatomy of “the fuel for the people“ and also discover more about Yemen.

Any given cup of coffee, then, might have been touched by twenty hands, from farm to cup, yet these cups only cost two or three dollars. Even a four-dollar cup was miraculous, given how many people were involved, and how much individual human attention and expertise was lavished on the beans dissolved in that four-dollar cup...chances were...hundreds of people along the line were being taken, underpaid, exploited (pic of Mokhtar: insidearabia.com)

What a wild ride!! Mokhtar, a Yemeni-American, was a disappointment to his family. No college, bad job - until he became inspired to bring back Yemeni coffee to the world.

What followed was his education in coffee and a wild ride to get some of the world‘s best coffee beans out of Yemen for testing during a civil war and Saudi bombing. This is the most exciting, yet informative, nonfiction I‘ve read in awhile!!

Thanks for the heads up @Cinfhen

Dion Graham elevates EVERY story!!! I knew I‘d LOVE this audio the moment I heard his sultry voice. The true story of Mokhtar Alkhanshali, a Yemini born American who despite his abject poverty, believes he can better his life and his family‘s through hard work, big dreams and sheer determination. This story of an underdog will leave you inspired and hopeful. Along the way you‘ll learn about coffee, the history of #Yemen and the power of hope. 👇🏼

How are vaccinations going in Israel? Have your parents gotten one here yet? 3y
Cinfhen Good luck with all the appointments tomorrow💚Hubby & I had our first dose last week 🙏🏼Even though a LARGE portion of population have been vaccinated our numbers are still up! Government just EXTENDED our current lockdown until Jan 31😣My parents HAD Covid over Thanksgiving @Megabooks Thank Gd they both had VERY MILD case but they have to wait 3 months before they can get vaccine. 3y

Megabooks Thanks! Praise be, as we say in the South, that your parents came through okay!! It is SO BAD here. How did you feel after your first dose? I am so glad you and hubs are getting protected! Dad seems to do well with vax so I hope he‘s okay. Mom does not do well with vaccines due to post polio so we‘re waiting for more data for her. They aren‘t vaccinating people under 65 yet in KY, but I‘d be worried to take a vax as poorly as I‘m doing now. 💜💜 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I remember you crazy lady 😉 that you liked that book!! 😂 Different strokes, I guess!! And I loved Monk 4.25 stars!! Good night friend ❤️ 3y
Cinfhen Praise Be, Indeed @Megabooks ☺️Hubs felt great after, I just had mild soreness in the site arm the first 24 hours, but really it was fine. I understand why you‘d want to wait and your mom too. Did your mom contact polio through the vaccination?? I‘m SO GLAD you loved Monk 🥰Dion definitely had a hand in my enjoyment, though 3y
Megabooks Still up. Mom‘s 76 this year and got polio in 1952 before the vaccine was available. She believes she contracted it from a shared drink with 4 other kids. 3/5 came down with polio. My mom has only the use of her ankles from the waist down. For years she used only crutches but since her late 50s, she‘s had to transition to a scooter. Since it‘s been gradual, she‘s adapted well, but dad did a lot of caregiving that has now mostly fallen to me. 3y
Megabooks I told you our parents were about the same age. Mine were just old AF when they had me, especially for the time. Like many older moms of that era, she was advised not to have a second child. Hence me being an only. Dad‘s turning 72, so mom was a cougar before it was cool. Lololol! 😂😂 3y
Megabooks So glad you and hubby did well with vaccine! I hope the second goes as smoothly. 🤞🏻🤞🏻 3y
Cinfhen Go MOM!! That‘s rough for her though, Meg. To be still so young ( 50‘s) and become confined to a scooter. Your dad really did take on a lot. Hope you‘re getting some good rest. #LoveAcrossTheMiles @Megabooks xxx (edited) 3y

Picked this book from the library‘s front picks without knowing anything about it. Ended up being a good based on true events about a young Arab American finding his self and his passion after serval attempts. Although I was already somewhat familiar with the process of coffee trees, cherries, drying and roasting, it differently make you appreciate your morning coffee reading about all the struggles and dangers of getting our coffee to our mug.

It‘s been a very long time since I finished a book in one day! I recommend this to anyone who enjoys coffee!

This is the non-fiction story of Mokhtar Alkhanshali, a Yemeni American who dreams of bringing high grade Yemeni coffee to the speciality coffee world. There are only a few problems...Mokhtar is no coffee expert at the start of the book and Yemen is on the bring of civil war.

Read this exciting adventure of the Indiana Jones of coffee!

A gulp of a book with info on the history of coffee and the life of a Yemeni immigrant. The main character is a delight and although it is non fiction it reads like fiction. #nonfiction2018 #coffee

Dave Eggers and Mokhtar Alkhanshali, talking about Yemeni coffee. Excellent choice to start the morning off at the National Book Festival!

I thoroughly enjoyed this quick and informative read about Mokhtar Alkhanshali‘s journey to bring Yemeni coffee back to the global market.

“Coffee could be smelled and tasted and touched. And it was a commodity, recession-proof. Next to gasoline, it might be one of the most recession-proof commodities of all. Fuel for the machines, fuel for the people.”

The advanced readers copy that I won on Goodreads way back in January finally arrived. I didn‘t think I would ever see it, so I‘m glad that I finally have it in my hands. I‘ve heard good things about it!

This was a nice easy read. An inspiring story. After reading it I just had to try the best coffee in the world for myself! Also Huey loved the green uncorrected proof's cover!

This book is so so good. Was not expecting such a technical book about coffee, but that is the magic of Eggers. I did not want to put this book down. I want to buy this coffee, but it is $160 for less than a pound, but good for him.

cornfedwellread I listened to the This American Life episode where they talked to the guy the book is about. I hate coffee, but I found the story really interesting! 6y
