I love how forthright and honest she is in her work. I found her second book even more compelling. I wonder if she's working on a third?

Highlight of today's Book Festiful was stopping by Bill Meissner's tent. If you gave him a topic, he would type up a poem for you, on the fly, on his old typewriter! Here's mine!

JMEdwards @Henrik_Madsen yes! And Ridley Pearson on the right. They are members of the Rock Bottom Remainders along with Greg Iles, Mitch Albom, Scott Turow, Alan Zeiebel, Roy Blount Jr., Mary Karr, and Dave and Sam Barry. "But don't wait for something to happen before you begin to write; pay attention to the world around you, right now. That's what poets do."

readinginthedark Wow, talk about finding beauty in every day things! 5mo
JMEdwards @readinginthedark Washing dishes has always been my least favorite chore. What a shocking poem! 🤯 5mo
JMEdwards Also, I like this word "moiling". 5mo
See All 6 Comments
readinginthedark It's a good word! It's kind of funny: I used to love washing dishes by hand. I would turn on some folk rock and just turn my day or week over in my mind. It gave me space to consider things. Since I got used to using a dishwasher (at age 21), it feels frustrating and tedious to me. I get annoyed even washing one or two things. It's all about perspective, I guess. 5mo
BarbaraJean I love “grey sacrament of the mundane!” I get frustrated with how quickly the dishes pile up around here (no dishwasher, although I‘m used to that). But I‘ve found that audiobooks make dishwashing much more pleasant!! 5mo
JMEdwards @readinginthedark That does sound very zen-like! @BarbaraJean I will have to give that a try! 5mo

So, I knew this book was about an old curmudgeon. Lots of good review, so I thought, let's give it a try...

What do you do when the first sentence turns you off? Really?!?!

starlight97 What's wrong with this sentence? 😃 5mo
JMEdwards I can't believe this character is the way he is because of his age, but rather the trials he has faced in his life. Why make age the central issue? He is far too young for me to believe this is even a remotely believable character. The first chapter is ludicrous. 5mo
ReadingOver50 Agree. I am 54 and don‘t feel that old! Certainly not a curmudgeon! 5mo
See All 13 Comments
dgingo 59 isn‘t old, but I have a longtime friend who is 44, but he‘s a curmudgeon and has been since I met him in his mid-20s. Then I have my 80 year old great uncle who is more youthful and fun than some who are decades, or half-centuries younger. While curmudgeons are typically old, they don‘t have to be. 5mo
Eggs "Age is not important unless you're cheese." -Helen Hayes. 5mo
llwheeler I did like this book, but it took me a few chapters to get into. I had the same initial "seriously?" reaction at the start. 5mo
JMEdwards @dgingo Yes, my point exactly. So why make his age the first sentence of your book? it's own paragraph? Maybe start with "Ove is an ass." Now that's a character I can get behind! 5mo
dgingo @JMEdwards I have it, but I haven‘t read it yet. I‘ll have to get back to you. 😊 5mo
readinginthedark I never rely much on first sentences, so it was fine with me. I think the problem is not the book as much as people selling it to other readers as being "about an old man." 5mo
JMEdwards @readinginthedark Yes, makes me wonder why this irked me so much. Feeling sensitive about my age perhaps? 5mo
readinginthedark Perhaps! I get really annoyed when there are similar characteristics to me that are emphasized by the author or readers, but the character doesn't represent them well from my perspective. 😆 I think when actually reading this book, it's obvious that Ove is curmudgeonly more because of his background and personality than his age. But giving his age does put some of the job and marriage/friendship issues into context. 5mo
JMEdwards @readinginthedark That's good to hear. Well, have to give it a go now that I've made such a stink about it! 5mo
readinginthedark 😆 Well, you don't have to, but so far I'd recommend it! 5mo

Poetry first spoke to me in 7th grade with this poem. Such drama! I remember I did a voice-over recording of the poem using a classroom cassette recorder and spooky music in the background. Several other verses follow. Do a quick google search if you want to find out what happens to the boy.😮
