To my litten friends everywhere!
This book destroys the myths about the Alamo, to include the people involved and the reasons for the battle. The main reason for the Texas revolt, which included the defense of the Alamo, was slavery. Mexico had banned it, infuriating American settlers.
The second half of the book looks at the strange history of its preservation and cultural context. Fun tidbit, musician Phil Collins is a major player in the site‘s recent history.

Mary Karr writes beautifully of her tween years and adolescence in Leechfield, Texas in the ‘70s. Not as sympathetic as her first memoir, because it‘s a difficult age for many and particularly for Mary, who is smart but also often impudent and challenging as well as challenged by her home life and the counterculture movement.
I would have made the prologue an epilogue, however.

My pick for August is tagged. I also loved Book Woman. I read it for work bookclub and then found out I read the wrong book. 😂 The rest were picks as well.
My August Bookly report. It was a slow reading month for me.
5 Stars • Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry follows retired Texas Rangers Augustus "Gus" McCrae and Woodrow Call as they lead a cattle drive from Texas to Montana in the 1870s. With a diverse crew, including young Newt Dobbs and tracker Joshua Deets, they face Indian raids, bandits, and harsh terrain. The epic journey explores friendship, duty, and the fading Old West, culminating in bittersweet success with heavy losses.
The book follows Elsa who lives on the great plains with her family and zones into the migrant experience of this particular environmental disaster.
I didn't know about the dust bowl and while I didn't feel any real bond with the characters, I was really interested in the events in both Texas and the migration to California. The government's response, action and the Communist movement really did draw me in.
25-5. A little slow to start, but by the half-way point I couldn‘t put it down. I learned a lot about the Dust Bowl and Okies and California work camps 🤯.
