As an atheist and someone who really doesn‘t like religion, I thought this would be a cute, fun read—I was right. Another bookworm with the same feelings recommended this book to me. It‘s hard to fit in to a world where everything about you is seen as wrong. I felt for Michael, and I would‘ve done the same things he did, except probably worse🤣

This was a cute YA story about an atheist teenager who is forced to go to a Catholic high school after his father moves for work yet again. He finds an unlikely friendship with a group of "heretics" and, even though he doesn't quite fit in, this group of misfits ends up becoming life changing for him.

I just finished my student teaching yesterday!

I bailed on 90% of the books I started over the last four months. This book caught my eye. I'm going to see if it can help me get out of this slump so I can revisit my bail pile.

Come-read-with-me Congratulations on finishing! It must have been grueling to start your career during these crazy times! Hope you have lots more time to read! 3y
Rachel.Rencher @Come-read-with-me Thank you! On the bright side, I feel like I can handle anything now. 😅 3y
Librariana Hooray to student teaching being finished! 🥳 I think it definitely helps to have that practical experience in the classroom as well as having the opportunity to observe how experienced teachers respond to various scenarios. Best of luck 🍀 to you! And I do hope this title can help spur you out of your reading slump 🤞💜📚 3y
Lucy_Anywhere Congratulations! I cannot imagine how tough it must have been learning to teach during the last year. Welcome to the wonderful world of teaching - it has it‘s tough days but i hope you find something everyday to make you laugh! 3y

Book 11- 2021. I don‘t think it‘s a good sign when you finish a book and 3 days later you can‘t remember how it ended! This book was ok but the characters and their relationships with each other felt superficial even though it is obvious that they are supposed to be deep. ⭐️⭐️(and a half)

I found myself relating to the protagonist multiple times about his belief in religion. I was in a catholic elementary school while being an atheist and I found that the characters were bringing up the same points that I used to question while being in a religious environment. I do recommend having a piece of basic knowledge of the catholic religion or else you might be slightly confused.

HOLY SMOKES! I put off reading this entirely too long. The idea of it even having religion in it made me think do I really want read this? To top it off I‘m a solid fantasy reader I have a really hard time getting into contemporaries but I‘m so happy I took a chance on this one thanks to Emma Books on YouTube. I usually don‘t annotate contemporaries when I do happen to read them but this one had so mnany moments I just had to document. 5/5 Stars!

ImperfectCJ I was pleasantly surprised by this one, too! 4y

is a humorous contemporary book. It‘s about Micheal who‘s an atheist who just moved because of his fathers job. Because of this he has to go to a catholic school. he finds other people just “like him”. They meet together to celebrate their differences inside this church. Micheal decides that they should start making changes to the strict rules, and that‘s when things start to get a little rough.

Accidentally used a Lucy bookmark in a book with a MC named Lucy. More substantive than I was expecting, this novel addresses differences of faith, the propensity towards all-or-nothing thinking, the tendency of some atheists and other secular types to be holier-than-thou and dismissive of faith, and the nature and difficulty of forgiveness. Not without YA silliness, but overall it's solid and thought-provoking. And it made me crave toast.

ImperfectCJ One downside is that the homeschooled kid is fearful, ultra-religious, spiteful, and close-minded, which stands out as something of a lazy caricature among a cast of characters who are otherwise allowed to be individuals (while still being characters in a YA novel, of course). 4y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ YA that addresses a few religious faiths, atheism, sexuality, tolerance, friendship, and familial relationships. All real issues. All handled with care. I wholeheartedly appreciate Henry‘s willingness to talk religion. It‘s okay to ask tough questions! I could‘ve benefited from a book like this as a teen.

Scochrane26 I‘ll have to check this out, it might be good for my youth group. 4y

3 ⭐ Overall, this one was pretty 'meh' for me. I can't really say I enjoyed it but it was a quick read. It's very YA, which I'm not generally opposed to but this one seemed pointless. I'm also not sure how I feel about the portrayal of religion in this book.

3.5⭐️
This was a pretty good story of faith, friends, & fighting the good fight.
Michael‘s family moves - he winds up at Catholic school. But he‘s not Catholic; he‘s an atheist.
He finds Lucy, who brings him to Heretics Anonymous - kids who don‘t fit in.
They challenge the rules at St. Clare‘s.
What‘s best about this is the one-on-one talks they have. Lucy & Michael challenge each other to explore & define themselves. No judgment - just talk.

My husband and I just finished listening to this. Now we have six hours left to drive. What next? This was such a funny and cute story, a good one to listen together. My husband was raised Catholic and was raised Protestant; as former church kids, there was so much to relate to and laugh at. Michael refines his own beliefs while leaving room for others to believe differently. This is a book about relationships: romantic, friendships, and family.

Having children that went to Catholic school, I get this book. The questions are handled from all angles, from firm believers, to non believers to all different types of believers, all intelligent and all worth hearing, and still done with humor and warmth, unafraid to address the hard questions. While there were some parts of the story that were left hanging and some that tied up a little too neatly, I really enjoyed this book.

This was such a fun audiobook and perfect for a week when I needed something that would easily keep my attention. There is a lot of humor in this YA tale about a high school atheist forced to attend a Catholic school and the group of students he befriends but there is a lot about acceptance and tolerance as well.

“I don‘t believe in God, but that doesn‘t mean I believe in nothing.”

What a great book! I related a lot to both Lucy and Michael. I was raised catholic but I started to question things and now I don‘t believe in organized religion BUT that doesn‘t mean I don‘t appreciate religion and the people who love it.

Great writing and great characters! Thank you @hermyknee for gifting it to me.

A really fun & interesting YA book with a great voice. An atheist teen is enrolled at Catholic school & gets involved with a devout Catholic girl who wants to be a priest, a gay Jewish boy, & others in a group called "Heretics Anonymous." I really appreciated the many views toward religion, & the acknowledgement that it can be a force for both good & bad. Mostly I just really enjoyed the characters. I love a group of misfit rebels.

Old picture, but too lazy to take another right now. It felt a little heavy handed at the end, but overall a quick, sweet read. It was weird reading about Catholicism after having not been involved in years and years. You don't forget that stuff, I'm finding. Loved this group of friends and especially related to Michael, though his relationship with his dad was on much better terms by then end of this book then I'll ever be with mine 😅
