Jane and the Genius of the Place
Jane and the Genius of the Place: Being the Fourth Jane Austen Mystery | Stephanie Barron
12 posts | 8 read | 3 to read
In three highly diverting mysteries, Jane Austen has shown herself a clever hand at unraveling the deadly knots woven by the unscrupulous. Now, in her latest engrossing adventure, Jane is called upon to solve a shattering crime that may begin and end in one man's heart--or encompass the fate of an entire nation. In the waning days of summer, Jane Austen is off to the Canterbury Races, where the rich and fashionable go to gamble away their fortunes. It is an atmosphere ripe for scandal. But even Jane is unprepared for the shocking drama that ensues when a raven-haired wanton in a scarlet riding habit takes center stage. She is Franoise Grey, a flamboyant French beauty who has cast a spell over the gentlemen of Kent...and her unbridled behavior at the races invites the most scandalous speculation. What can Mrs. Grey be thinking, Jane wonders, to so brazenly strike a gentleman with her whip? And what recklessness then spurs her to leap the rail on her fleet black horse and join the race? Only hours after Mrs. Grey has departed the race grounds in triumph will Jane realize the full import of her questions. For in a shabby chaise less than a hundred feet from where Jane sat, the impossible is revealed: Mrs. Grey's lifeless body, gruesomely strangled, her ruby riding habit nowhere to be found. As those around her rush to arrest the owner of the chaise--a known scoundrel with eyes for Franoise--Jane looks further afield to find a number of others behaving oddly, including the dashing military man caught rifling through the dead woman's desk, the widower who does not appear to be grieving, and the shy governess curiously overpowered by the horror of the Frenchwoman's death. As rumors spread like wildfire that Napoleon's fleet is bound for Kent, Jane begins to suspect that Franoise Grey's murder was an act of war rather than a crime of passion. The peaceful fields of Kent have become a very dangerous place...and Jane's thirst for justice may exact the steepest price of all--her life. Deliciously sinister and splendidly wrought, Jane and the Genius of the Place is a stylish puzzler that only the incomparable Jane Austen could hope to crack. And in her capable hands, the solving of it is a pleasure to watch. From the Hardcover edition.

This took me FOREVER to get through, which is a surprise because I agree with what everyone else has said - Barron is really starting to hit her stride with these mysteries. I think I still prefer the storyline of the last book the most but this one was definitely better constructed! Onwards to book 5!

#Pemberlittens it's Time for #JaneandtheExcellentReadalong Discussion.
This Read at Your Own Pace Book Club is held on the 30th of every month. Pop in anytime to leave your thoughts.

In Book 4 we've traveled to Godmersham Park 🇬🇧 in summer.

My Answers in Comments.

Crinoline_Laphroaig 1️⃣ Jane 'gardening' while eavesdropping:
"I threw my back into snipping flowers as tho‘ my very life depended upon it."
2️⃣ "However retired my future days, I will have my wit to sustain me—the secret sarcasms of my pen, that must subject even the greatest to my power, unbeknownst to themselves."
3️⃣ Godmersham Park. This was a case of Setting becoming Character.
4️⃣ Lord Harold
.

Crinoline_Laphroaig 5️⃣ That they we're under a threat of Evacuation because of Napoleon. While I know some about this time period, I didn't realize this.
6️⃣ Country Cottage. I like reliability. Plus I could save my money and have a holiday of visiting great houses

Crinoline_Laphroaig 7️⃣ Lazy morning with breakfast, and then reading by the fire in Library. Afternoon visiting all the sights of the garden: HaHa, Summer House, Bentigh, and especially walking across the Stour and up the hill to Doric Temple. More reading, then back to the house for sumptuous afternoon tea.
8️⃣ My Glasshouse is definitely my happy place. I really feel my garden needs a Folly. Mini Stonehenge at the corner of the property?

Crinoline_Laphroaig 9️⃣ Enjoy all the books in this Series, it really hits it stride with this one. Perfect mix of intriguing mystery & Jane's life.

Captures Jane's actual poor relation status to her wealthy brother. Love the playful snarkyness of Jane & her brothers.

Also like how included real person Anne Sharpe in a way that was believable. Isn't always the case in Historical Fiction.

I'm a gardener so all descriptions of gardens made me happy. 👩🏻‍🌾📖📚

The fourth in Stephanie Barron‘s series has Jane residing in her brother Neddie‘s Kent country estate, Godmersham. Of course an intriguing murder occurs during a day the family spent at the horse races, & Jane is determined to solve the case.
Neddie is saying this to Jane regarding her propensity for putting pieces of a puzzle together & exposing the killer. The phrase,”…morbid taste for bones” delighted me.

Aimeesue An homage to Ellis Peters and Brother Cadfael? 1y
bibliothecarivs @Aimeesue I was going to ask that too. Curious to find out. 1y
kspenmoll That is a curious one- maybe she did borrow it. Now I need to read Ellis peters!!!! 1y

#Pemberlittens we're off to Canterbury Races and doing a spot of gardening with November's
#JaneAndTheExcellentReadalong

Title references classic garden design from Alexander Pope: "In laying out a garden, the first and chief thing to be considered is the genius of the place."

The Gardener in me loved this one when I read for #JaneandtheYear2020 because it mentions one of my favorite garden designs - the HaHa. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig Beautiful cover! It's just a bit dark which makes it hard to see in the photo. Jane is peering out from what I think is a Garden Folly. Will see if I remember correctly once I reread.⬇️

Pickpick

Light pick - I love the premise of these, and I am extremely fond of the footnotes. But while I worked out the "how" nigh-immediately and the "who" in good time, I found the "why" a bit of a hopeless muddle.
An enjoyable read let down by the resolution...
