Meh.

I've always been interested in Dahmer and this is definitely an interesting and behind-the-scenes look at the man behind the murders but I just think true crime stories aren't exactly graphic novel material. The third party, high school view just didn't do much for me. Though I did find the sources at the end to be an interesting read.

Schnoebs I loved his other book a lot if you like a mash up of fiction and nonfiction 1mo

Even after reading some of #Triptych and watching Nightmare on Elm Street, this wasn‘t the best thing to read before bed, regardless of it being a graphic novel.
BECAUSE IT HAPPENED.
IT WAS REAL.
Drawn and written by author-artist and former classmate ‘Derf,‘ he constructs a clear picture of how a mentally disturbed Dahmer grew up in an environment that shaped him into a serial killer. So many signs. So little done.

UnidragonFrag This graphic novel was so terrible. There were many signs that went pretty much ignored. Makes you wonder if he got any positive input if things might've ended up differently. 2mo
kamoorephoto @UnidragonFrag Alarm bells were ringing all over the place. How were they so blind? I guess it‘s always easy to see it in hindsight but NO ONE stepped in at all. Shameful. 2mo

I hate liked this book. I loved this small glimpse into who Dahmer was as a teen - however, I feel also like the man the wrote it is capitalizing on a loosely based “friendship” with a teen Dahmer he only hung out with because he (Dahmer) was the source of a good laugh. I could just be overly critical of the material but it made the book seem hollow. #dahmer #onesitreads

Oof. Quick, disturbing read. The artwork is unique and interesting, the story is personal and compelling. While I think it is important to understand the twisted brains of people like Dahmer, I‘m glad he is gone.

Wow, honestly a real eye opener. It's one of those types of stories where even some kind of adult intervention could have drastically changed his life and saved so many lives. I guess without people like him though we wouldn't be able to figure out key signs to prevent future serial killers or catch them sooner. Either way, it shines a light from a different side from someone who actually met him and knew him, well, to what he let them know.

vivastory Great review. I thought it was an interesting book, I also recommend Backderf's strangely compelling & informative graphic novel 9mo

I picked this up on a whim because I have a fascination with serial killers. I enjoyed Backderf's writing style and artwork, but I also felt like he was trying to capitalise on a vague association that he used to have with someone who's now infamous.

Makes you think about what could have been different if literally anyone had noticed how troubled Dahmer was a kid. But for all that, as Backderf tells it, there were some guys who were willing to accept him, weirdness and all, giving him what he would later recall as the only friends he‘d had.

RebL People noticed. He was at school at 7a drunk. There was no mandatory reporting and people didn‘t dive into other people‘s business. I think too many looked away. Also, as time goes by, I‘m increasingly angered that blame is heaped on JD‘s mom! 10mo

LaLecture I really liked this one too! I think it‘s fascinating to see the back story of someone people only know as a horrible serial killer. If Dahmer‘s parents or teachers had been more attentive and if he had gotten professional help, maybe many other things wouldn‘t have happened 🤔. This graphic novel really made be think about things like that. 11mo

A complete departure from what I usually read. I‘m not a fan of graphic novels or serial killers! However my brother was talking about the movie made based on this book and of course my graphic loving partner had a copy . She got it at an op shop for $2 and had never read it. A look at his early life by someone who went to school with him. Before the killings. Interesting but alarming. @MrsMalaprop

#2018Book98
While the art style of this graphic novel wasn't my favorite, the book itself was great. Backderf shows the world in which Dahmer grew up, offering insight into what might have led him down the path he ultimately took. My favorite thing about this, though, was Backderf's insistence that no one forced Dahmer to become a killer; he made that decision on his own.

This is an excellent graphic novel. This isn‘t the tale of Dahmer‘s crimes, but instead, a personal examination of an adolescence which left one young man, isolated in the face of immense challenge and internal turmoil. What I found most powerful, was the way that Backderf consistently illustrates the missed opportunities to help. He leaves us with the enduring question- where were the adults?

I am a true crime fanatic. Jeffery Dahmer has always been a fascinating serial killer to me. He wasn‘t the typical person when you looked at him on the outside. After reading Derf‘s telling of the Dahmer he knew I saw the struggle he was going through and how he needed someone to be there. Very eye-opening and a must read in my book!

I was completely fascinated by this graphic novel (actually a biography) by a high school classmate of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer in the 1970s. It was well-researched and provided much insight into the sad and lonely teenage life of Dahmer. In fact, only two weeks after graduating from high school, Dahmer killed his first victim. Included in this edition are detailed notes as well as photos from the 2017 movie. Highly recommend!

Disturbing and fascinating, Backderf's account of one of the most notrious serial killers was certain to be a good read. And it was. Backderf's illustrative style fits the dark atmosphere he's attempting to create. I found the author's attempts to humanize Dahmer difficult to emphasize with, but it was a intriguing viewpoint none-the-less.

I would recommend this to anyone who has a fascination with serial killers. #comicsread2018

This book was disturbing, but not in the way I expected. I knew I'd be reading about the development of a serial killer and was prepared for that. A lot of the story (and images) are about how the narrator and other ""normal"" kids superficially bonded with Dahmer by mocking someone with cerebral palsy (and/or Dahmer's mother, as the narrator notes; she also is treated pretty badly by the book). ?

UrsulaMonarch This IS an interesting lens for approaching both high school and how a serial killer comes about, though. 2y
RebL I hated the treatment of the mother. Yes, she was problematic, BUT the father knew this and left his son in that situation. Because the blame game happened in the end, it nearly ruined the rest of the book. 2y
UrsulaMonarch @RebL so glad I'm not the only one who felt this way! It definitely seemed like the mother could have handled things better, but she clearly had a LOT going on herself and no one seemed to be helping her (either). I was really curious how the little brother did. 2y
RebL Went on a lazy Google hunt. Can‘t find much on David except he changed his name. 2y

I've been a Derf fan since his local weekly comic, The City, but I was reluctant to read his most famous work. It is a sad and tragic story, but I am glad he told it. Hopefully, the book will help more people recognize & help troubled kids.
Will I see the movie? Despite the fact it was filmed at my kids's school, I'm in no hurry. Too much reality for me.

Although lacking a climax, I still enjoyed this read. Presented as a “fill in the blanks” sidepiece, it provides a different POV on Dahmer‘s life, one which may instigate empathy or sympathy within its reader.

I wouldn‘t consider the book to be overly explicit. Rather it shows a depressing trail of red flags that was ignored by his peers & family. For those wanting a deeper insight of who Dahmer was, this book could provide missing pieces.

This was not what I expected. It‘s a graphic novel told by a young man who was friends with Jeff Dahmer in high school. However, the description makes it seem las though they were actual friends when in actuality they were more like acquaintances. The narrator was very peripheral in Dahmer‘s life and had to use other testimonies to fill in many blanks. Honestly, the story went nowhere and was missing a climactic moment within the plot.
