Robinson Crusoe
Robinson Crusoe | Daniel Dafoe
Robinson Crusoe is a novel by Daniel Defoe, first published on 25 April 1719. The story is widely perceived to have been influenced by the life of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish castaway who lived for four years on the Pacific island called "Mas a Tierra" (in 1966 its name was changed to Robinson Crusoe Island).

Robinson Crusoe, as a young and impulsive wanderer, defied his parents and went to sea. He was involved in a series of violent storms at sea and was warned by the captain that he should not be a seafaring man. Ashamed to go home, Crusoe boarded another ship and returned from a successful trip to Africa.

(1719) Awkward pacing, religious moralizing, and pervasive racism, combined with ethics that rank disobeying one's parents as the deadliest of sins but enslaving one's neighbor as God's divine plan, make this very difficult to read except as an interesting piece of literary history. But it is interesting.

Graywacke Cool that you read it. But i guess it‘s not a very good life guide. 🙂 13mo

What makes a classic? Not sure but Robinson Crusoe qualifies for me. I used to teach it, and each time, it gave me something new to think about and/or appreciate about it.
That said, I can understand never wanting to read this book. 🤣

I borrowed this as an audiobook from the library, and it ended up being a heavily abridged radio drama. I enjoyed the dramatization, but I don't really feel the need to read the full version of the novel.

While a classic, being the first English novel and such, and with all due respect to Defoe‘s creativity, the story is awkward at times especially when the journal as narrative device fails to keep the reader compelled. Defoe makes up for this somewhat with the psychological thriller of the latter half of the story when Crusoe finds the lone footprint in the sand on his “deserted” island and later frets and plots against the threat of cannibals.

This has many aspects we might find problematic, most specifically from a postcolonial aspect, and it has 'early novel features'--a final travelogue in Europe--where we would expect narrative unity and closure. However, it is a fascinating read for all of those reasons; I am still inclined to think that it is better to study the past than to suppress it. Maybe not if you love animals, mind you 😏 ...

I went in the Swiss Family Robinson treehouse while in my Disney trip; here‘s a picture of the kitchen room; it was decorated in ship/nautical style!

I read Robinson Crusoe, inspired by a real maroon. It wasn‘t as epic as movies or TV shows portray it, but the takeaway is there was a lot of goats on the island.

I didn't hate Robinson Crusoe, but I just couldn't get on board with the colonialist BS it espoused (even in context). The “englightened“ Englishman “redeeming“ the “savage“, ugh. It did convince me that I would never survive a shipwreck on a deserted island though. I'd just drink whatever booze I could salvage and meet my maker shortly thereafter 🥂 Full review here: http://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/robinson-crusoe-daniel-defoe/ #ClassicBooks

Come-read-with-me @Sace As I grew up, liver and onions were a monthly thing in our house. My Mum loved them. We love liver how ‘bout you? “ It‘s much longer than this first line - I‘ve repressed it! So if you are weird you are in great company! 4y

As I was reading Pirates by Helen Hollick, she mentioned Robinson Crusoe, which I had never read. Since it‘s one of the free classic downloads for Kindle, I downloaded it yesterday. But so far, I‘m finding it a bit of a slog to get through because it was written in 1719. Let‘s hope it gets a bit better once he‘s shipwrecked. it also could be because I‘m trying to read it on my iphone. Maybe it‘ll be a bit easier on my Kindle.

ravenlee I read this recently. For the record, it doesn‘t get much better after the shipwreck. It‘s interesting, overall, but it is haaaaard to get through! 5y
wanderinglynn @ravenlee I figured. Even though it‘s in first person, the writing of the early 1700s is just so dense! 5y

The adventure story is interesting, if tedious at parts and rife with coincidence. The moralizing and the arrogance of the MC was very hard to take, even trying ti appreciate that it‘s a product of its times.

The most interest part for me was solving the mystery of the out-of-order pages (109-112-111-110-113), and because of that error this copy probably won‘t stay in my library. Glad to be done with this one!

I think Hallmark has overlooked a niche market here.

This whole section just makes me ill. Even allowing for context it‘s infuriating.

And one of the first words he teaches him is “master”?! I‘ve been enjoying this story fairly well, for hating all the moralizing and finding the MC hard to stomach, but this is giving me real trouble.

Bob has just found a spot on his island he‘a never seen before (in 15 years there?!) and is horrified to discover evidence of cannibalistic feasts by nearby savages.

And my mind immediately conjures Captain Jack Sparrow running from the cannibals in the second Pirates of the Caribbean. Which is much more entertaining than Robinson Crusoe‘s moralizing.

merelybookish I really like this book. I taught it for a while and it always surprised and educated me. BUT the main character is AWFUL! I like to believe that was intentional on Defoe's part. 5y

Okay, I get it - good ol‘ Bob is getting saved. But what kind of arrogant asshole can believe that his ship was lost and the entire crew drowned to teach HIM a lesson? And what kind of god would actually do that?

This book is bringing up some of my issues with Christianity/Christians.

Interestingly, this book could be the first ever fiction novel in english ever writtern, its a grey area what novel was writtern first but Robinson Crusoe is a contender. Written in the 16th century, this is the story of Robinson and his adventures when travelling. I've seen a lot of reviews criticising this over it's religious beliefs and wording of other nations however let's not judge a 16th century book on 21st century standards.
